Hi SG, I hope you're enjoying your weekend.

The upcoming GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) standards are more strict regarding email marketing, which is why you see the new prompt on our homepage asking you to update your email preferences. In the past, these notifications were enabled by default when you registered. However, with the new regulations you will need to opt-in to give clear consent to these emails starting May 25th. That's why they've been disabled for everyone today, and you need to reconfigure your email preferences. User registration has also been updated, so new users can choose whether to enable or disable these notifications when they sign-up.

As you're likely aware by now, we don't spam your inbox. If I remember correctly, we only sent one email to the community in the past seven years, and that was to reengage inactive users. However, I do encourage you to subscribe to both of the notifications. If we launch a new project, a noteworthy feature is added to SteamGifts, there is a holiday event, or a well known developer leaves a bag of keys on our doorstep, then I would like to share that with you. Either way, please choose your settings on the email notifications page, and the prompt on the homepage will disappear out of your way. Thanks!

Notifications for winning games and giveaways ending were still enabled for me. Probably because I manually updated them in the past?

Those are transactional emails, and they continue to remain enabled by default. They're directly related to the service and let users know their gift needs to be sent, or they won a gift and it needs to be claimed. For that reason, users do not need to opt-in, unlike any kind of marketing or newsletter type of emails.

I do read announcements posts here so would rather opt out of getting an email about new features or site changes though.

Can I just say, seeing the green 'change' notification on the main page was amazing. You should use that for all major updates. No more missing out since irregularly checking the forums.

+1, so many people don't visit the forum on a regular basis (or at all) so it would help with letting users know about important updates.

Good stuff, I like the change. The freedom to enable features without having them forced on you (default on) is always good.

Whoa ... I saw this mail, right after reading this topic ... and my first reaction was, "Geez, this must be some some phishing mail." But hey, it's real, the giveaways are really there. Just to be on the safe side, I did not click on any link in that email though ;-)
