ValveTime:
"We can now confirm that the "Half-Life 3" trademark has been removed from the Trademarks and Design Registration Office of the European Union (OHIM) website. The entrant appears to have disappeared entirely after only being listed on the website database for little over a week, allowing us to identify that the trademark's listing was more than likely a hoax intended to generate fake buzz for a game which is unlikely to appear for several years. Returning readers may remember when we had discussed how the "Half-Life 3" listing was previously never officially checked or authenticated before its removal."

Yeah, because adding a number to a trademarked name changes everything.

You'd need to get Half Life 3 trademark first. And that takes time, few months, maybe even years. And Valve, as owner of Half Life 1 and 2, could file objection to your trademark-listing and would won it, disallowing you from using HL3 name.

For same reason War Z isn't called War Z - because "World War Z" said they own War Z name, and Hollywood Company > some Russian Company.

Tell that to 2k, who own both "Mafia" and "Mafia 2" or "Civilization" and "Civilization V" trademarks.

Like I said in another thread; All who believed it must be idiots, why the hell would they trademark "Half Life 3" with the '3' and not just 'Half Life'? It's like trademarking a series name every season. :|

Damnit, you mean I can't try and trademark "iPhone 11" and make miiiiiillions? My life is over. :(

I think you need both trademarks: "Half Life" so everybody would know who is owner of franchise (if you'd like to make movie out of it) and "Half Life 3" so shops would know who will get money from sold copies (just remember, this "examples" are written in quick and dirty way, just to show a very general idea).

For example: when you start Mafia you'll see that "Mafia, Mafia 2 (...) are trademarks". Same with Civilization V.

"Half Life 3" so shops would know who will get money from sold copies; Trademark and copyright isn't the same thing, and what you said really doesn't make sense in first place, "shops would know who will get money from sold copies"? they just buy a product from a distributor and that's all. :S
The point of trademarking is attain right and control over a name so other people won't be able to use it, trademarking a trademarked name with just really really small addition is completely useless as when you trademark a name the trademark will apply to the name even with small changes.

Told you it's very quick and dirty example - not the best, true.

Besides, if you would be right, there would be no reason to make "Mafia 2", "Cilivization V" nor "Half Life Blue Shift" trademarks, as there's already "Mafia", "Civilization" or "Half Life" trademarks. Yet they exist - I guess what that means about your "why the hell would they trademark 'Half Life 3' with the '3' and not just 'Half Life'"...

It would be reasonable to trademark "blue shift" because it isn't just a minor variation. And unless you have more examples, Mafia and Civ are both 2K's, might just be a company's thing.

But conclusion is that there's no trademark for "half life 2" only for 'aftermath', so no reason for half life 3 trademark.

I mean the game itself, confirmed by Valve, not some trademark found by desperate fanboys.

Valve already confirmed it a long time ago, like 6 or 7 years ago. And the game is definitively in active development, and a list of devs on the official Source bug tracker has already been leaked. Half Life 3 is happening, there is no doubt about it.
