When you give emoticons for gems, it checks their value, their popularity or their number? So, which emoticons give you the most gems?

Is there any way to buy gems?

There is a way to buy gems. If people pack them into 1000 (?) together and sell them on the market.
I think you get the most gems for the emoticons and backgrounds that are most in numbers on the market and only cost 0.03 $ or something like that. Stuff that is nearly unsalable. Look for those. Steam is trying to clear out the market and make these "trash" items into money again.

Do trading card also give 100 gems like backround?
Lets say you find cheap 1c items from market(probably sold out), with 1$ you get 33 items, 3300 gems?
This round ends 15dec, so imho there is no point to waste your gems and bid atm, next rounds last only 45 minutes?

But the bids will stay - so if the top bidder wins with let's say about 11.000 gems and the second highest is about 10.000 you still have to beat this 10.000 next round...

CS:GO backgrounds were giving 100 gems last night, I think that's the most gems you can get from a single item.
