It was worthless all along, I did take advantage and trade it for lots of games though, I feel sorta bad but they wanted it...

Ah, crud. :/ Thanks for the heads up. I was about to waste a ton of time doing achievements I didn't really feel like doing.

That's a bit sad. I was planning to do the last couple days of achievements on the last day and craft all of the remaining coupons. The only Valve games I don't own are L4D2 (only because the German version is censored and I don't buy censored games) and the old Goldsrc games, so those coupons are useless to me.

It makes me a bit mad that it still let users craft coal without some sort of notice indicating the only things they have a chance of getting are coupons or Valve games. I've had every Valve game since it came out, and I have almost every game I've gotten a coupon for anyway.
The great gift pile was something of a disappointment for all the work I put in! Oh well, it was fun anyway...

Please Note!
If you unlock an achievement on or after 12/31 your prize will be a free Valve game, a coupon toward a Valve game, or Holiday Coal.
says it right on the holiday sale page on the right, now.

It bugs me that Valve:

If Valve had simply said 'we have X number of units to give out of the following games," would it have made any real difference? I doubt you could/would have kept track of which games had been crafted. It's also possible that that is information the third-party developers didn't want Valve to specifically share.
I can kinda understand what you mean there. But at the same time, it's likely that the possibility was always changing based on the number of gifts. Even if that isn't the case, it's not like that would have made any real difference in the end. It would have been nice to know. But I don't think it's a big deal we weren't told.

I don't know why they even changed the system from this Summer, with the golden tickets and being able to pick and choose your own rewards. Yeah, the overall rewards were FAR less valuable, but at least you weren't screwed based on sheer dumb luck, plus there wasn't really a way to consistently exploit it.

Don't waste anymore of your coals crafting.
Valve ran out of 3rd party games and coupons and now the gift pile only contain Valve games and coupons.
