I think the yesterday's game ended and today a new round begins, so everyone starts at level 0 again.

It seems I was right. I'm in the first game of today, still waiting for players.
EDIT: Once the player counter hits 1k everyone gets kicked out and a message appears "The game is over". I guess it's going to start in 20 minutes.
EDIT2: For a second a screen flashed where I could choose a one time use ability for participating in yesterday's game. Not sure how many I could choose as it shut down pretty quick.
