depends on the games. the ones i've been playing have run just fine with 8 GB

Yes, you are right, but there are the usual Fanboy who defend the game even if it does not deserve it, when I asked in the Crash discussion, they were telling me they played it without problems.
In fact this morning after the crashing 20th time, I decided to uninstall and "retrieve" 40 GB of space for serious games and better optimized.

I built a whole new PC for the Witcher 3, don't regret that decision.

8 GB is enough. Do you have problems in other games?
Anyway, you never buy games on release, they're always still buggy.
What are your PC specs? Is anything overclocked?

If you're confident there is a memory problem try lowering settings like textures or screen resolution in order to lower the memory usage but if the game has memory leaks you will end un with crashes no matter what you do, sometimes people see no crashes with more memory because it takes longer to fill it up if there is a leak.

Just to re-iterate: Right click on a game on steam -> properties ->local files tab- >browse local files -> open CommonRedist -> install everything in there.
Normally steam install all of those during the first time setup, however sometimes steam derps and doesn't install everything.

8gb is fine for most. I did experience MASSIVE improvements on games like Just Cause 3 and smaller but noticable changes on Fallout 4 and Dying Light: The Following though.

Yeah, sorry :P I upgraded from 8 to 16 (2400 ddr4) because there was a nice deal on it so I figured why not :P Had to do it sooner or later anyway

All depends on your budget and the price of the RAM, and the games you are currently playing. Make a list of pros and cons and go from there.

You need more RAM only if you multitask a lot, for example have 2-3 games running at the same time with 20 chrome tabs or something. Every game runs fine on 8gb unless it's some unoptimized massive open world clusterfuck like Star Citizen.
I have 750 ti which is budget card and 8gb RAM and they can run every game on medium/high settings unless it's some AAA game like AC Syndicate because the textures require more than 2gb video card.

+1 i got 8gb, and my games crash because i always have one game in background + 20 tabs open, and an emulator for my android games open xD
Also some games like ARK crash because they need to much ram and 8 isn't that much if you have a big base with hundreds/ thousands of dino..

ARK uses more and more RAM after each update (increasing as long as you keep the game turned on, until they fix this), it happened to me too, but I had the game and a server for it with 5-6 players runnning at once (16 GB of RAM here, no regrets).

I am surprised nobody has made any "download more RAM" jokes yet.

I'll upload some of mine to Dropbox and post a link to share.

Most of the games are still optimised mostly for consoles, and they have 8/9/12 GB of RAM (including Scorpio) But they use it as system RAM and video RAM at once, and since all dedicated GPU's have it's own video RAM, you won't need more ram than consoles. So 8 GB should be enough for 90% of PC users until the late 2018 (probable date of PS4 Super Pro release)

As it was already said, the memory prices currently are extremely high (at least compared to what they used to be a year or so ago). At this given moment, unless you are doing extremely heavy multitasking, 8GB is enough. I'd suggest that you wait for the time being and hope that the prices will drop a little bit and grab another 8 gigs.
PS: You could search for some used ones as they all come with lifetime warranty. As long as it comes with the receipt, you can have it fixed (or replaced or w/e) in case anything happens.

8gb is perfect for most games nowadays. Don't buy RAM if you expect a performance boost. Only buy more RAM if you are running out..
