As per this mess... http://www.steamgifts.com/discussion/dXONj/blacklisting-should-apply-to-current-giveaways

One solution would be adding an option that allows us to turn off the notifications when a reply is made in a giveaway. Too many people are being blacklisted ever since this notification feature came into play and I think it's because of the fact that the giveaway creators get tired of seeing the notification and have to click the "Mark As Read" button all of the time so instead of coming up with a better solution they are taking it out on the members.

IMO the rule "you cannot ask users to perform any special action in order for their entry to be considered valid" is being broken by giveaway creators who add a rule/threat of blacklisting others who reply or say thanks. While it may not apply to the present giveaway they are basically asking people to comply with their "special action" or they will be excluded from future giveaways from that person, and that to me is still the same thing. The ensuing debates in that topic are rather sad to read as many good contributors are turning on each other. Giving us the ability to turn that notification off will hopefully bring an end to the debates and of what I feel is a grey area in how the "special action" rule is being interpreted.

Of course this should only be done as long as giveaway comments can be separate from comments from the Discussions section and the feature won't disable notifications from both sources.

Maybe cg can add the feature to the site or one of you script writers can come up with something?

What if someone posts something important or interesting? :V
People should just stop freaking out and press the damn "Mark as Read" button.

I didn't want a repeat of the mess that is in the topic thread that I linked to in my original post. I only created this one to bring it to the attention of either cg or one of the script writers as I feel that this solution will pacify most of the people who are complaining and blacklisting everyone left and right. Please continue the discussion in the other post. I'm not disagreeing with you though. Clicking the button is a lot easier than writing code.

I think it's silly that people are blacklisting for "thank you" XD.
It's not like they're email notifications...

If they were email notifications though I bet we could turn them off. LOL

You'd be able to turn off the email part, probably, haha.

You'd be able to create a simple rule to filter those emails out, especially if the text of the reply was included in the email.

I believe that there was a script which would filter the generic "thanks" comments, but I can't remember where it is or its name.

The issue has increased ever since the notifications were added. The "thanks" filter won't stop the notifications if someone says something that doesn't trigger the script. I used to say "gracias" a lot so people wouldn't think I was a bot. If I did that now people would still get mad because of the notifications every time a reply is made and I'd probably be on a lot more blacklists. No one hardly ever asked for people not to reply AT ALL in a giveaway until these notifications were added. Now I see it all of the time. I think that this solution would make many people here much happier.

And then there's that "Thanks for being so f***ing awesome!" guy.

I was talking about the one which filters out the comments.

Why not add the option do dissable comments for certain GAs? Like with some videos on youtube? Just a message - "comments dissabled".
I don't care but some people (especially those who create a lot of GA and try to take part in discussions) might find this option usefull.

That would be great too but I don't know how hard that would be to implement. Usually "all or none" are much easier to code than "if - then", especially if there are a lot of variables involved.

Great idea! I do think that the winner should be allowed to add a comment any way.

People seems to be bothered by the notifications, not the comment itself.
Maybe having a setting where you can choose which type of comments you get notifications for (since they are already categorized anyway) would be the better aproach.

I'm not sure this would help, because "Thanks" (etc) added by a bot/script and by the winner would still fall into the same category (this is assuming those who write and those who use bots/scripts would bother to accurately use right category, which is not a given).

Categories are sorted by origin: giveaways, forum, etc.
Is not that common to have discussions on a giveaway, so ignoring the comments on them altogether wouldn't be problem for most users.

I agree, an option for turning off notifications for giveaways would be good. It's easy to find your giveaways and look at the comments, and a lot of that are messages that aren't worth reading, let alone replying, so the feature is a lot less valuable than for forum replies.

I agree, but with all the mess and noise since day one, I doubt CG isn't aware of the problem.
Anyway thanks for the "official thread". Probably the most important thing to address. For me more than the wrong CVs 100x and 0x.

i'm not annoyed by people saying exactly the same thing in all GAs, spamming "thanks" or endless notifications i get. the issue is people that ignore GA descriptions either using a "enter button script" or a bot to submit entries+comment.

disabling comments in GAs only hides the issue, it doesn't prevent rule breakers from using shortcuts and ignoring what the GA creator has to say.
it's like not allowing people to check for unactivated or multiple wins in profile pages.

That's a good point, but how do you deal with those comments and rule breakers? Expecting giveaway creators to investigate users they suspect are using scripts (and building enough evidence) is not very realistic, although I did just that and reported the user who did that in the couple of "trap giveaways" I created the other day. Still, it's too much of an effort to do regularly, especially in lower-level giveaways where there are many more rule breakers.

since ignoring ga descriptions isn't against sg rules, we can't do nothing except blacklisting offenders. and since there are no rules for blacklisting, i think it's fair that GA creators add offenders to their blacklists.

GA creators spend their time and money to give away games, it would be polite to at least read what they want to say in a description...

i have no means to detect if someone is blindly posting replies or using a bot, and i'm not gonna spend 10 minutes per user looking for all his/her comments. but if someday i decide to write "BOT FILTER! reply with a thank you comment and get blacklisted, don't reply and also get blacklisted" and people deliberately ignore what i said... well, it's blacklist time.

Of course, being strictly pedantic, if you ask users 'not to' perform ANY action on a giveaway, then that's not breaking any rule.. hehe.

But anyway, I agree with the idea, I would always prefer to have replies in all giveaways (it can be useful for the winner too for saying thanks), but turn off notifications would be useful.

This would be useful for those who don't like notifications.

I actually love the notification feature. It's the mountain of generic "thx"/etc notifications from giveaway entrants (and the scripts some of them are using) that I and others don't like. The notification feature is great, it just needs some tweaks to fix this issue.

I agree, this would be nice, I don't black list anyone, except people who I see arbitrarily black listing people on the forums for no reason, but it is annoying getting notifications over and over when you post a giveaway... honestly I'd be fine with the feature simply not existing. Comments on giveaways don't benefit anyone. If you like the thanks you's just pretend that every entry gave you a thank you, it's just as exciting lol

This is generally a good suggestion, but I really like to see comments that aren't added by scripts. One possible option is to add an easy to pass CAPTCHA to the comment field in giveaways. This would ensure that comments are from real people not scripts or bots. Being easy to pass would ensure that people who really want to comment won't find it troublesome, and since no resources are to gain (the giveaway creator's respect isn't a precious resource lol) no script or bot writer would bother to try to OCR or otherwise bypass it.

No. The solution is not ignoring all the comments. The solution is making quality comments. And people is free to blacklist whoever they want by the reason they want.
