First off, is Vietnamese Dong used as a local currency in Steam yet, or do they still use USD? I usually don't buy gems off the marketplace but I've noticed that in the last several months, the vast majority seem to come from Indonesia. I think I've also gotten some in Vietnamese, but that wouldn't make a lot of sense if they're still using USD.

re;

22280:1 Vietnamese Dong to USD
13240:1 Indonesian Rupiah
1154:1 Korean Won (in screenshot)

where it's rather easy to get gems for cheap in countries w/ low value currencies. Esp. for 10 or 20 gem bags, where people in the UK, EU, Switzerland, US, and Canada can't even proper bids. UK also gets shafted on 40 gem stuff.

But those things you thought were dead? They aren't really!

Oh, on April 14th, I think that slightly higher price there might be from Switzerland.

yeah, i google'd it, and there wasn't really a straight answer...

there was a lot of promises from valve about adding vietnam local currency.. looks like they've added most of the others that were promised (like south korea's won).

i guess on the bright side, if they ever do get around to adding it, it should be the best marketplace currency there is, unless they ever add Iran currency (which I don't believe would even be legal for them right now, operating in US)

that wasn't even the best example, really.. the 20 gem items are better, where you can see plenty selling for equiv of 1.5 cents usd.

tho, on the screenshot, those two bottom listings are for like 0.0099 usd, so cheaper than buying off marketplace. i did some scouring and there were a few things you could purchase, turn into gems, turn those gems into sacks, then sell on the marketplace for an immediate profit, even after fees. not much of that, though (and generally on 40 or 60 gem games, that ppl might not be aware of). mostly, it's just like the stuff above, where if you add in the fees, you couldn't sell for a profit on the marketplace.

there's all sorts of currency conversion shenanigans that go on... e.g. if I place a bid for 0.05 USD, it shows up as equiv of ~0.0301 usd in south korea won. so, steam gets that tax amount in USD regardless of whether the person is buyer or seller. they only lose out on transactions that don't involve people from 'high value currency' countries (which I guess I'd classify as anything from CAD value plus)

i guess the 'worst' local currency would actually be something like the omani rial, which equals 2.6 USD. pretty sure they have that currency implemented
