GF and I want to watch horror movies this weekend, what should I buy? I'd like to hear suggestions (preferably ones that are worth owning on Blu Ray since I will be purchasing from Amazon, will buy 1 or 2)

Fire away :) what's the best of the best, we both haven't seen a lot of horror films, most recent one we saw was Krampus, and that wasn't pure horror

I've heard The Conjuring is worth owning, Insidious, The Descent etc

  • Original Japanese version of The Ring, along with the rest of the series. (American remake isn't bad, but original builds a much more oppressive atmosphere in my opinion.)
  • Continuing in Japan, Zombie Ass: Toilet of the Damned for a none-too-serious alternative.
  • From a renowned producer/director, there's also Bad Taste and Braindead/ Dead Alive.

For some other classics:

  • Alien yes, the first of that series is much less action, much more horror
  • Hellraiser 1,2 and 6
  • Wolf (1994)
  • Society

And for a real troll answer, there's none better than:

  • Troll 2

Ok, I seriously had to ask someone that liked this movie: WTF is nice with the Witch movie? xD It was boring as hell. xD

The Witch explores the fear of the unknown in the 17th century, which is pretty much the same fear we have today for supernatural things. Sure it's slow but in the end it's rewarding.
Boring and slow-moving is "The Others" with Nicole Kidman, in the end you feel like you've wasted two hours of your life.

I love horror and creepy movies but honestly, The Witch bored me to death because for me personally there was nothing even remotely creepy or disturbing about it.

I am surprised that no one mentioned Psycho and The Omen.
More atmospheric ones, for something more raw The Texas Chain Saw Massacre.

I wonder if The Omen TV series is worth watching. The Omen might be my favorite horror series when I think about it.. it's also sort of interesting that Gregory Peck was in it too, maybe.

Was thinking the same thing, but after I watched Ringu (the original Japanese movie of the American The Ring series), I've lost my trust in the Japanese movies. xD

Check out ''a Serbian Film'' it is the sickest movie ever and worth seeing if you have a good stomach, you open minded and remember that cinema is an art so you have to find the hidden meaning and not just stick to what you see.Again I would recommended it only if you are a hardcore fan,Be prepared for a shocking experience !

I consider Sinister a must-watch, it terrified me
Absentia, Lovely Molly, and The Taking of Deborah Logan are incredible movies not a lot of people may have heard of
I definitely support you watching The Descent
A Tale of Two Sisters is a pretty scary Korean movie (you'd need to read subtitles)
Dark Water (2002) and the original Grudge movies (Ju-On)) are great Japanese horror movies
And Pandorum, The Thing, and Alien are some of the best sci-fi horrors

Trick R' Treat is awesome
My all time favorites however are the two Grave Encounter movies. I'm a sucker for movies that do the video types.

The Thing (80's version only)
Alien/Aliens
Let the Right Ones In
The Descent
Re-Animator
Under the Skin (sci-fi & psychological horror)
House of the Devil (throwback to older films - very worth taking a look at if you are a fan of the genre)
It Follows
Troll Hunter (watched on a whim since I watch everything, wow I was impressed and didn't expect to be)
Pan's Labyrinth (not quite horror but it might qualify and is def worth owning)

Personally Insidious....is rather over-hyped and I would avoid but that is my preference. It's not a terrible film but as someone who is pretty fond of the genre I'm real 'ehhhh' on it all especially with the way it ends and trails off into sequels. The Conjuring isn't bad - I know others like it a good bit more than I do as it's a very nice throwback to the feeling of older films. I think it just didn't stand out as anything particularly unique to me beyond 'throwback film' with references to some real life spooky stuff was tossed about.

Humor-Horror favs I own and would rec
Tucker and Dale vs Evil
The Evil Dead 2
Slither
Dead Alive
