Happy holiday. Unfortunately, I have a strong feeling that this thread will be trolled with sturgeons, thads, and dance dance revolution.

No trolls yet. Nice. By the way: In case you guys ever need to, I don't know, circumvent a huge wall or quickly reach checkpoints (be they charlie or otherwise) you might want to join a giveaway and learn how.

I have a piece of the Berlin Wall, its an interesting piece of history.
I tend to avoid discussion on unification, not all of my German friends are really happy with how things worked out post-split to a passionate degree.

On the twentysecond day of august in 1990, a very important vote was held in one of the Germanies. 294 out of 363 votes were cast in favor of the Deutsche Demokratische Republik (DDR) becoming part of the Bundesrepublik Deutschland (BRD); the fateful day for this was to be the third october 1990, less than a year after the fall of the Berlin wall and 41 years after the founding of the DDR. From this day onward, there was only one Germany, and eventhough differences exist, as they do among all people, there is little doubt that this was the start of a new, better era. Germany was united again and our national holiday was born.
I may sound soppy, but I do use this day to reflect on our history and, of course, on the direction the future will take us. I also remind myself how borders are artifical and, in the end, that we are all human; living creatures who want to improve the world - maybe just for oneself, but improve nonetheless. This may be a good chance for me to broaden my horizons and help you reflect on your own history... maybe you could use this thread to tell us about your own national day.
