It's even more annoying because my internet cuts out on a regular basis, so I can't tell if it's my internet or the site until every other page loads but nothing here will. I think it's probably just high traffic and the site can't take it that well.

inb4 someone inevitably blames it on Steam/Valve instead of pointing the finger at the unreliable database here. This is a common and recurring issue. And this is during off-peak hours -- think about how much worse it could potentially be. This site has more 'mood swings' than a woman on her period =P

Issues with Steam/Valve do slow down the site a bit at time, but it's a known fact that the current database needs some optimization. cg has spent a lot of time redesigning the database in SGv2 especially to get rid of these horrible slowdowns. We just need to hang tight until the new site is complete and all the data has been brought over to the new database.
