Guy who scammed me was a Lvl 100, with tons of rep, and screenshots of past transactions. My net connection was too slow for Enhanced Steam to show me that this guy already had a report pending on him for Paypal scamming. I went first on him, and he ran. Lost all that I earned in the last 3 days thanks to this guy. All those hours I spent awake uptil 4 Am in the morning, wasted. I don't know what to do. Whether to bang my head against the wall for falling for the textbook Paypal scam, or whether to just go into hibernation (You know, that mode we go into when we are so sad we don't even care about anything around us). I already did the former, and am now considering the latter.

I know what I went wrong with, and I know what I need to avoid. So don't bother putting that in the comments below. That is not what I want. I just wanted to be transparent with the folk I've spent almost 6 months with. Nothing more, nothing less.

Also being the idiot that I am, I will abide by my principles and put in a giveaway. You can argue I'm throwing away more money, but I counter that with the simplest of answers.

I. don't. care. anymore.

(Level 3+, with requirements that only charitable folk will pass. Be warned.)

Have you ever gotten scammed before?

Sorry to hear that. I haven't gotten scammed, but I haven't done any significant trades and I check everything to be safe. All my trades have been for cards, so I wouldn't miss much anyway.

Man that sucks. How exactly did he do the paypal scam thing?

I was scammed by trading an unusual TF2 hat for Max Payne 3 (when it was brand new and worth a lot). Turned out to be a RU version.

Also I hate the "real CV". It's such bs. If you spent money on a steam tradable copy and the game goes bundle, the real cv will implode to dust. UGH.

A game becoming bundled doesn't affect ones you've given out in the past.

It will if your steam tradable game is sitting in your inventory and has not been given a giveaway yet.

Gotcha. Yeah, that would blow.

Yeah. But I giveaway to make other people happy and able to enjoy games they might not otherwise be able to. CV is not my goal. So as long as people like the games, I'm happy :)

Sorry to hear what happened. Was it a Steam gift? If yes, you might be able to get it back if you ask Steam Support. If this was your first encounter with a scammer, and you have proof, they will probably help you. If it was a key, then you can contact the seller to deactivate the key and generate a new one.

If he was trying to sell the game for real cash, Steam Support will show him the middle finger.

Yeah it's worse over holidays. Even level 100's decide they don't want to use authenticators, so they get hacked and the person waits till holiday sale. They wait because they know the ticket volume will be extra high and they can use the account for multiple days before it's recovered. It's possible the original owner decided to start scamming people, but in my experience it's the idiots that won't protect their accounts. I'm sorry this happened to you.

Paypal for steam? Shame, shame, shame. Never trade anything that isn't INSIDE the steam trade window!

Can't tell if you are joking, or being a douche, or are just butthurt because you couldn't enter the giveaway.

It's a legit response, and for good reason. By only sticking to the trade window, if things go sour Valve can reverse the trade. If it's not in the trade window, welp, tough luck.

I'm aware that trades outside the trade window are something Valve does not care about. But its not something I'm supposed to be ashamed to do. Hence why I typed the above comment.

I'm sure "not caring" isn't the case, it's just they can't confirm anything unless they see it in the trade window. If they did it any other way Valve would be the ones getting scammed!

I know there are a few different methods of trading on Steam, and none of them are inherently "wrong", but they all have varying degrees of risk. Trade windows are just the least risky.

Sorry dude. Think of it as a valuable lesson next time. That is why I only use steam wallet instead of paypal transactions. I find it much more convenient buying cards from legit areas :)

"Hey I offer you Paypal money, but you need to go first." That. Or,
"Hey I offer you Paypal money, you can gift the game second" and the buyer charges back his money.

Still doesn't help. In my case it was the first scenario. So he never paid up. But I get what you mean by switching to Bitcoin, because there is no such thing as chargebacks there.

The newer the game and the higher the price, the most likely you get scammed. I decided to stick to bundle stuff and luckily managed to avoid even the wannabe scammers.

+1. I only trade some bundle games fir bundle games or small unbundled ones, so even if I do get scammed it's not much of a loss. Never been though, thankfully.

Trade the items talked about at the same time no exceptions. This way nobody is scammed.

Yeah to me PayPal is an automatic"no" to trading because of the back charge/ able to get money back after the transaction. I understand the scamming; I was invited by two scammers when I was looking for 6 .
