I agree. Saw for example a trial against a granny for downloading like 30-40 songs illegally and was convicted to pay hundreds of thousands dollar as a fine. I don't remember of she also had to go to prison. But it's rediculous certainly when u know that like at least 75% of all people downloads something illegaly.
And some 18y old guy who illegaly downloaded some shit and now has to pay of a fine the rest of his life...
If u ask me they should imprison those people who made these laws and the judges who enforce them for corruption. Because for example politicians only made these laws so extremely severe because the entertainment industry gives them money for their campaign and in return they do this bs. If you ask me this is clearly corruption. This happens a lot and with a lot of thing in america. For example also with the arms and oil industry.

@title, since the OP doesnt interest me: assuming it is a single human without any of the relations or posessions that makes your average person "valuable", then zilch/a nickel for the bullet required to remove said life.
piracy though, thats an easy target considering most people dont understand a pc well enough to understand the distinction between legally/illegally downloading

3 stores and 700 camels. That's what they offered for my sister in Egypt 8 years ago. With inflation that would probably be more now.
On another note. When a corporation pushes a punishment for stealing from them, they don't consider punishes for other crimes not connected to them. This should be the governments duty to balance these, but since a corporation that brings in money is far more important to them than you, we have riots.

Sounds like a good deal, I would have taken that deal.

It's very simple, fear.
When people commit crimes like rape or murder, they usually aren't thinking about the consequences. Piracy is viewed as such a trivial crime, that people understand that it's wrong, but aren't afraid of getting caught. As people start getting punished, other people will start to think twice about it.

The quantity of money someone's life is worth depends entirely on the person, most are worth nothing (just as trash is worth nothing) while others (like me) are worth millions...
As for sentences, firstly it depends on your countries legal system, and secondly it depends on the prosecutor(s) and defense lawyer(s).

How much is humans life worth? It really depends on the human, that we're talking about. If it's a murderer, rapist, animal killer, it's really worth as much as his organs. Noone would miss that piece of sh1t if he get's murdered. If it's a good person, it's priceless. Because you dont know, how many peoples he could help by staying alive. That's my opinion.

So much this. In some countries you can get away with murder and only serve 2-4 years in jail, jail with plenty amenities such as internet access, TV, ability to get a degree or two (depending on time served, Norwegian homicidal maniac comes to mind)..

Usualy value of life is set when death arrives. Mainly on a war or an accident... and the value is not very high on the most rich countries. Of course the value is much lower on poor countries. For example deaths on Bangladesh from people making what you wear now.

So what is bugging me is, that people that pirate digital software get punished way harder than
rapists, child abusers etc., because no money was "stolen" or "lost" in the process.
I couldn't find many more articles other than this very small thing here, I am sure they are out there, I read
up on them a couple of years back but this issue was called back into my memory after reading another topic here on steamgifts where a user called pirates "worthless scum".
Anyway, what do you guys think? Shouldn't courts punish properly for hurting other people, other than "hurting companies money"?
I for one think it is a joke to charge a million dollars and a 10 year prison vacation to a pirateer that shared a song to say 20 of his friends, while child abusers get 2 years and 10.000 dollar fines?
