Greetings community,

You're reading this correctly. After many weeks of discussion, we believe that it's a good time to move away from invites. The system served a good purpose while the site was rapidly growing. The SteamGifts community is now nearing 50,000 members and that system no longer seems appropriate.

Please note we still require all registered members have at least $50.00 worth of games associated with their Steam account.

If you have any questions, concerns, or comments, please feel free to express them here.

-regards
SteamGifts Team

Unused invites

If you had unused invites, please be aware that we will be refunding 50P per unused invite on your accounts over the next several days.

I don't like the idea. The community that formed out of a already shattered community, will shatter once more and probably never recover.
This will also just push people to giveaways in private groups even more.

The quantity of giveaways will rise, the quality will drop though..

As a moderator, I wish to inform you after having removed hundreds of giveaways that they were not predominantly Russian. Sorry to burst your bubble of confirmation bias.

Speaking of fakes/scams are you mods really ready for what you are about to unleash. Do you guys have a way to require reading of and agreeing to the rules of the site? Do you have a way of making sure that no alt-accounts are used? It's not hard for a scammer to steal a cc#, create a new steam account and buy a $50 game to get back into the site. I just hope you guys are ready, good luck with this choice.

  1. Soon.
  2. Yes, always.
  3. This has never been an issue. What will they scam anyway now that winners are hidden until mark received?

Not really scam a gifter out of a giveaway, but scamming someone out of their steam account and creating alot of giveaways, resulting in the original account owner being banned from this site. Never underestimate the stupidity of some people, with the right words anyone will roll right over. The community we have now is pretty smart when it comes to account security, but not everyone is.

I think you're overreacting. There have been thousands of giveaways since SteamGifts has been around and hundreds more when it was done on SteamGameSales.com. We have never had a single instance of this ever happening, even while allowing CD-key giveaways.

I've also never actually heard of someone being robbed of their Steam account outside of the initial concern. With SteamGuard, a scammer would have to also gain access to the email account attached to the Steam account. That's a bit more difficult than just having someone activate a CD-key.

Maybe I am overreacting, it's just that I've seen firsthand how stupid some people are with their account details, especially someone new to steam. For example when I was helping my cousin set up his steam account he willingly handed me his pc, his steam login and pass, and his emails login and pass, even though I told him not to. While I personally wouldn't do something nefarious, others would with that info. Anyways I wish you mods/admin the best of luck with this.

We know the community loves stats. Here's some more.

Comment has been collapsed.

Well personally I doubt that this will help the site. It may promote a greater growth but in my opinion not an improvement in terms of quality. But maybe this is just flawed thinking because lately and for some time now the flow of invites everywhere has reached such a proportion that perhaps it is not that different than open registration. In truth, right now it was rather easy to find an invitation code as dozens are spammed evryday throughout many forums. The 50$ minimum will still avoid the mass creation of secondary accounts for point generation. Plus the site has improved a lot regarding the prevention of scamming.

All in all although I am still quite a bit sceptical regarding the open registrations, maybe the growth ratio of members will not be that higher than it is right now and the proportion between number of members / giveaways created manages to stay the same.

Honestly, as I've mentioned previously, per cg and the stats, the growth ratio of members of the website would not have been dramatically different if we removed invites at any other point in time. This is even factoring in the amount of people that attempt to register that don't even meet the $50 minimum requirement.

Yeah that's what I started thinkin a while back. Time will tell how the site will react to this but maybe it's just the ending of a feature that is just not usefull anymore. As I said the number of free invites flowing around has reached such a number that it practically meant open registration already.

1 decade ago

I'd really like it to stay invitation only
Or higher 50$ to 100$
It's my opinion.

1 decade ago
Permalink

so why you wouldn't raise the requirement amount to up a 50% or 75% to lets say $75 or a bit higher like $90, so this will definitely remove a lot of extra factors and ensure that we don't encounter wave of people joining super easily, thus making all the current members that are not so sure about this, a little bit more confident and some how "secure", and increasing / reinforcing the "private" status that the site already has.

The system to calculate account values factors in noted boostable games. It excludes Dirt 3 from your library and combines all games from Humble Bundles into neat, inexpensive packages instead of allowing someone to activate Frozen Synapse and SpaceChem keys on their accounts to reach the minimum requirement. $50 is still pretty high.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

You are wrong. Very many Steam users have accounts that cost over $50.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Make the requirment like 200 dollars and I would agree with what you are about to do.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

$200 is far too high. $50 has proven to be a good enough roadblock. Obtaining invites wasn't at all difficult the last several weeks, so the only difficulty has always been the $50 minimum requirement. Though, due to the way the system calculates your account value, $50 is a bit harder to achieve because it doesn't factor in games that could possibly boost your account value.

1 decade ago
Permalink

HFSB is 50 dollars.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

You can have Frozen Synapse and SpaceChem from the relevant bundle on your account, but it'll be worth the average value of the Humble Bundle, which is around $5. This is to thwart any possible boosting. Dirt 3 is also excluded when registering.

I don't think 200 is "far too high" what so ever. I think $50 is far too low tbh, $50 worth of games isn't shit.

Keep the invite system, but get rid of the 50 dollar minimum because that's just stupid.

I mean, my friend wanted to join because he wanted at least one game. His steam account has no games, and he can't add friends and such. And he was blocked by this mean $50 filter

Here's the problem if you remove the $50 min. You'll have more beggers and EVEN LESS chances of winning a giveaway and more work for mods due to people cheating the system by making it easier for them to make accounts.

Another approach is that this is a community where we gift one another, how can we be sure your friends will ever gift if they have nothing of their own. Face it, altruism is not a common trait people have.

If it were up to me, I'd raise the $50 min to the value of all of the humble bundles combined (steam prices) and throw another $50 on it. But, that may be a bit excessive and the decision isn't ours to make.

But as the others said, defiantBlaze, the $50 minimum is important to reduce the number of scammers.

1 decade ago

Doesn't really matter, giveaways are already too big to justify going through the hassle of making invites.

At least this means that people can't sell invites for cash or tf2 items.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I also think that the invite system has long been useless, since noone is (or has been) responsible for the people he invites. It was ok just before invite codes where given to reddit after which any person even without the "required" ethics could enter the site. Before that, I don't remember a single fake giveaway, nor people using other means of "cheating" the system.

Anyway, I will be ok with what is to be made if bundles (and games included in them separately) are not taken into account. Bundles and other (almost) free to "buy" games should generate no points, and should not be added to the account worth of games at all!

Other than that, I'm ok with the site, since I've given up on entering public (non-group) giveaways anyway. It will make no difference for me if public giveaways have 1.000 entries or 100.000 entries. :)

Games within the Bundles were always combined into a package by the system during the registration process. This prevented account boosting to avoid a user activating a couple of bundles on a new account to register once again. Even with Frozen Synapse and SpaceChem on your account, it'll only be valued around $5 when you attempt to register.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well if you think of it, if someone has all bundle games he would have 3*5 (humble bundles) + 5 (Frozenbyte bundle) + 5 Frozen Synapse Bundle, + 10 (Voxatron bundle gives you Blocks that Matter and Binding of Isaac) = 15+5+5+10 = 35$ worth of account when he could probably have only spent 0.06$ for it. Add Portal to that (got it for free) that is total of 42$ FAKE worth of account...

They would have had to have planned that this site would exist from the very first HiB, though, right?

Point is: invite/no invite doesn't change a whole lot concerning the one mastermind who predicted this site's existence when the HiB launched.

Bah! And that directly after I invite a friend to test my then broken giveaway. Can't catch a break!
But seriously, I think that's a good move, but it probably will mean a lot more giveaways will be migrating to group giveaways.

I would say, that SG registration needs to be closed for a few months at least, after that, could allow to register, for example, 100 new members each month or so.

I am fine with it. But I now would really like to see the option to limit the number of entries.

This way the giveaway creators could decide themselves how good the winning chance on their giveaways should be.

Please note that when registration was temporarily disabled, invites came back with cost relative to site activity. Invites were over 120P on average. During this period, thousands of members were registering per day. Can you see why invites are no longer necessary?
