Maybe this has asked/answered before, but how it is possible (or even "legal") for anyone to delete a [negative] review on steam?
By the way I tried the demo, seems interesting. But we should admit that this game is super hyped, while many, many other indie gems are not taking too much attention.

Check towards the bottom of the second page...I asked that question a little while ago and got a pretty shocking yet informative response.

Just being informative

Thanks for the reply, Rick!
Seriously, I cannot accept something like that.
As part of the Steam community, we should react to this right now.
But... "spamming" a review with comments, how, like a bot posting every few seconds and you're getting hundreds of notifications?
If that's the case, then it should be very easy and obvious to spot, I am sure that the majority will not support a developer with such practices.

Yeah, the fan response is pretty intense. It's still early days so people are still coming down from the mania of finally getting to play their fabled game. I'm sure most of them mean well, and think they're giving legit counter-criticism of the negative recommendations, but it's way too easy for them to slip into heckling.
I previously joked about the fanaticism, remarking about one of the game's beloved characters :
"Behead those who insult Toriel!"
but given the game allows you to go on murderous rampage and the critics do tend to have missed the flow / function of the game (rather than treating it as interaction/ambience/humour centric, they're treating it as a traditional action-oriented RPG and naturally finding it really lacking in that regard), I switched my remark to :
"Insult those who behead Toriel!"
Seems more appropriate :3c

I was never interested in Gone Home, and I really never heard any of the buzz about it. Perhaps because it doesn't have any character interaction, just retrospective? It also seems to rely on some final 'twist' to add a retroactive enjoyment, a bit like the prodigy music video "Smack My Bitch Up".
I still think the big reason for the review burst is that the demo did a good job of showing you what to expect, so the people who were hyped and waiting in suspense were very likely to enjoy the expanded experience. Then when the full game turned out to exceed expectations, it jumped into a outright Goat-cult state, haha.
I also think a large part of it has to do with the emotional gutpunches and humour. Think back to the original release of games like Final Fantasy 7 on the PS1. Even where the gameplay may have been imperfect or where tastes would vary, the random plot-points that stir up strong emotions can make people glaze over the game's shortcomings. Even then you would expect there to be more negative reports, but with the limited scope of the gameplay and the advertised focus on interaction and characters, it's like a perfect review trap. The retro NES style will likely repel some people outright, and the combat system will likely make them think of a cheap gimmick tacked onto an RPGmaker-grade game, whereas those looking for the humour and lured by the music are more likely to get utterly snared by the emotional story pieces.
The negative reviews seem to be avoided more by wearing the game's weaknesses on it's sleeves. Consider the earlier remarks about Undertale being $1 bundle filler garbage. While I'm sure at least some of those were deliberate trolls, it does make me realise that strong divide in surface appearance is exactly what is protecting Undertale from bad reviews.
This may be one of the few cases where professional critic reviews are more reliable than the user reviews. Hell, maybe even youtube critics and lesser review sites that get review keys will be able to put a more lucid spin on the game.

Sorry, what are you implying exactly?
Devs don't have the power to delete comments, only to flag them as inappropriate. It's down to the steam moderators whether they act on them or not, and the dev claimed they didn't even know they had actual dev abilities for this sort of thing.
Before you start a crusade, you should at least check to make sure the demon you're charging at it even real, and not just some poor sap with a cart of cabbages minding his own business.

I think you didn't read very well my comment or some previous comment(s) in which a fellow member guided me to read, as a reply to my question.
To save you the effort, in such a comment someone was saying that it is possible to "spam" a negative comment until that person removes it. And to that, after I asked a question in order for someone to clarify this with more details, I said:
IF that's the case, we should react to it as a community.
Where is the demon, the charging or the crusade? :)

OH, crap. Sorry! xP
The way you said the "Seriously, I cannot accept something like that. As part of the Steam community, we should react to this right now.", I took that to be a declaration of 'the dev is doing it'. Though that is because I couldn't find who you were replying to, the name didn't match. There was no Rick, and the next highest comment was talking about 'how is it even possible/legal for a dev to do that'.
I reacted in that way because this game is pretty much Toby's first foray into game development, and it has been an emotional experience for me. Just as I've seen/heard of devs doing underhanded things, I've also seen false crusades spring up. Bigger names can weather the false accusations easily enough, but a virtual unknown on their first game is stood more in a dangerous "we don't care, blacklist/boycott this guy and never talk of it again" kind of terrain.
So yeah, sorry about that. Kinda walked right into my own little crusade remark myself, aheheh~
xP

No worries, as long as we are able to explain ourselves and to understand each other, there isn't any problem :)
"Rick" is a character's name from some of the best animated series ever! (and the person's avatar to whom I replied earlier) Out of topic, but you should check it, full of witty ideas. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2861424/
If I was a developer I would wish that all gamers were like you, supportive and ready to defend a wrong accusation, as long as they appreciated the game :)

I just tried the demo. Music immediately turned me off. It's as if I was back 30+ years to the age where hardware couldn't make any comprehensible sound and we all suffered through beeps. So got rid of that, and started the game, and I'm just at the beginning (been given a cell phone, started wandering and died), but I don't get what's special about it. Does it get better?
Comment has been collapsed.
If you don't enjoy the retro styled / chippish music then this game is already likely to be a big swing and a miss for you.
The game is really quite easy so I'm a little confused at how you died after a little wandering?
And yeah, the game really does get better, though the demo is pretty sparse in terms of visuals and variety. The main game has more to it, but what you see in the demo is a general idea of what to expect. It's character-centric, with your interactions, the humour and the ambience being a big draw. If you don't feel compelled to play to find out about the area or catch up to Toriel, if the music is grating on you, and you're craving stimulation through more action/gameplay, then this isn't really going to be the game for you. All the good stuff in the game comes from conversation and ambience, with the evasion system being a little snack on the side.

Well I just "finished" it. Just gotta say it was an experience. Not sure what else I can say. It was weird as hell! Especially the ending. I loved it all though!
Is there multiple endings? What can I do now i've completed it?
Comment has been collapsed.
Actually I don't even know where to start with writing a review. It is such a weird game that it can't even be put into words!
Comment has been collapsed.
Don't start writing a review. There's multiple endings and characters remember what you did during your playthroughs. It'll change up your playthrough and not only that. YOU yourself know what you did. In a realistic sense. Say, you killed someone. And you saw them again. You'd probably looked a little shaken seeing the person you killed again. Yeah. Well. That's undertale. Don't play it once. Play it multiple times. As far as I know, the game goes as deep as 3. So it will be wary of you and your presence in places 3 times definitely. It's the easiest to see this in the tutorial with flowey and with toriel. Things people say and do will change. Anyways. Please play it again. You did not get the full experience.

So restart the game again completely? Is there nothing more to see in the current world for me to explore?
Comment has been collapsed.
Um, maybe? I really don't know how to respond to your question. I'm just saying that things change and people change in how they interact and talk to you and how you interact with them based on what you've seen and done in your previous play through.
I don't know what to say, your question is just hitting me weird.

How do you which ending you got?
Well I know I didn't get pacifist because I killed people.
Comment has been collapsed.
Sounds like you got a neutral ending, which would be rather generic compared to making sure to never make a kill, or making sure to kill everything. The pacifist route gives you a rather startling final encounter series, and then leads into a 'true pacifist' secondary ending that you can get by loading your save from just before the final boss. Both of these are awesome. If you thought the neutral game was a trip, wait until you see the boss of the standard pacifist ending. :3
I haven't played the genocide route, but on that one, you kill everything. Shopkeepers. NPCs. Random encounters. Until you literally depopulate the areas to absolute zero. Your character itself will be different, and your opponents won't be so passive or doubtful of how to deal with you.
I would really suggest doing the pacifist and true pacifist runs, if only for the bosses and the explanations of what actually happened (regarding Flowey, Asriel, etc). The True Pacifist route is the canon ending, given it's the only way to get the credits to roll~
Comment has been collapsed.
Interesting! Well i'm currently trying to do a pacifist run anyway.
Also how exactly do you kill shopkeepers or NPC's?
Comment has been collapsed.
I don't know. After complaing the good and the good+ ending, I really don't have the heart to even try.
If I read correctly, once you lock yourself into the start of the genocide route, you can just walk up to certain npcs and interact with them to stab/beat them into oblivion with a single hit. Store NPCs I'm not sure, perhaps it changes the 'talk' option to 'make dead' :P
Comment has been collapsed.
Ah ok. Well i'm gonna attempt that after i've done pacifist then!

Oh, no. Is to say "greetins" or something like that. Like this:

My personal GOTY is finally out on steam, please check it out and maybe consider buying it. Undertale
It's priced at $9.99
If you want to try before you buy, there's a link to the demo.
I am aware the graphics aren't good. However please try to look past them. The game is enjoyable and I think that the gameplay and experience surpasses the graphics.
Also, here's some cool' fanart for the game.
.
the music is good. At least maybe buy the soundtrack on bandcamp since that's enjoyable.
