I realize that it isn't out yet, but it will be in not too many hours, what are your first impressions? (Once it is out and you have tried it?)

Oooh, I know the answer to this one!

They're a corporate sellout, eroding civil liberties and perpetuating conflicts in the Middle East because of our country's oil addiction and/or the military-industrial complex's lobbying and/or a desire to "win" the ill-advised and ultimately self-defeating global War on Terror.

What do I win? :)

Except that time zones don't work the way you think. We still need to wait for Valve to hit the 13th.

They should stop living in the past.

I can do Valve clickies too! http://blogs.valvesoftware.com/linux/faster-zombies/

"After this work, Left 4 Dead 2 is running at 315 FPS on Linux. (...) in the process of working with hardware vendors we also sped up the OpenGL implementation on Windows. Left 4 Dead 2 is now running at 303.4 FPS with that configuration."

315 / 303.4 = 1.04

In other words, after a best case scenario, with a LOT of heavy optimization from a company that wanted to optimize for an irrelevant OS, you got a 4% performance gain.

I can do Valve clickies too? What....does this even mean? Are you excited about being able to link something?

Also that was the first game they did, depending on how good people are and get at this it could be higher. Its kinda funny because its like you are trying to crush the hopes of people even before we know the full extent of optimization on Linux, unless you have a time machine maybe wait before acting like a total ass?(Have fun with 10.1 fps! That's if it works well. Otherwise, have fun with 5.1 fps! <----Ass)

No - I have given you BETTER information than the presentation you linked to, which included misleading data about a 11% performance gain. In reality, the gain is 4%. So yeah, sorry, instead of 10 FPS, you can get 10.4 FPS. Whoop-dee-doo.

Let's repeat that: after HEAVY optimization, which other game developers just won't do, the gain is 4%.

Windows gaming dwarfs Linux gaming. It's not even a straight-up market share comparison, which would mean 50 Windows gamers for 1 Linux gamer - it's an order of magnitude more than that.

And yet Windows (PC) gets poor console ports.

Now imagine how the ports are going to behave on Linux.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Right, because you know the future of gaming and where it will go, what will happen, etc...got it buddy.

Bad ports are most likely a thing of the past soon anyways thanks to the parts in current systems(More like PC's.).

"Windows gaming dwarfs Linux gaming. It's not even a straight-up market share comparison, which would mean 50 Windows gamers for 1 Linux gamer - it's an order of magnitude more than that."

Wait a couple years and say that, I doubt Windows will be the only way.

You're link isn't more convincing then my link btw....but have a good one being a jerk and all that jazz.

25, been building computers since I was 13(Been using Linux for even longer), why do you ask? To try and make me feel inferior I am supposing...like age really factors into any of this anyways. I like how you ask this instead of responding to what I say btw, real mature.

Grow up, I am done talking to you since its now obvious that it is pointless by your current response.

Yes, age is important. It gives one more experience and insight - in other words, wisdom. In ten years, you'll see. And in two years, you'll see that Steam OS made no difference whatsoever when it comes to big titles.

You should bookmark this thread and come back in two years. I'll bet my money on you. It might not be a revolution but in two years time I think we will at least start seeing the not-so negligible impact of SteamOS.

Nope, you need UEFI, only fairly recent (few years old) hardware will be able to run that, also this beta only works well with NVIDIA GPUs. Keep in mind that ARM is not supported.

You don't really need UEFI, this I can tell for sure (and could tell how to install it on BIOS systems soon enough). Beware, though!

But not everyone is willing to deal with command line and stuff, it should be straightforward, right?

Right. That's why my next step is to get it to actually ask you about your partitioning preferences. I'm gonna at least prepare a ready small one-partition image for it I guess.

You know, I actually did it in a completely different way, rebuilding an iso with isolinux from your basic Debian DVD for starters to get a battle-ready DVD image. People find all kinds of ways don't they?

Indeed, at least the OS is not closed.

I don't fully get the idea of the OS. I mean, yes, the new gabetower will have from the beginning more games than the ps4 and xo together. From AAA's to indie games to even old final fantasy ones which won't be even playable on the ps4. But on the other hand so does the windows steam version too. It has even more games than the linux version. So what is the point actually to get the OS or the tower? Isn't it silly to take Linux, which had one big pro - being DRM-free - and add DRM through Steam?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I believe the idea is to have an alternative "console-like" system. It doesn't seem too different from traditional models that place hardware restrictions to limit the system to gaming, this is just a software solution.

Edit: Also, as it has always been the case with this new initiative-- if you already have a setup that works for you, then there isn't any incentive for you to get a Steambox or use Steam OS. However, for any non-PC gamer looking to upgrade, this offers more user-friendly access to the master race.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

But the gabetower is nothing than a PC. The more expensive towers will even come with windows next to the Steam OS. And I think that is good since I doubt that Linux can make full use of the highly potential hardware built. I am no Linux pro though so that is just my guess.
I just don't feel that there is the need for the gabetower. Maybe if Valve will bring more Steam exclusive games than it could actually compete with the other consoles.
