DO you think the ROG Ally will succeed
I think it'll flop sadly.
Even tossing the price tag aside (which is probably going to be even higher than $1000+ for Ayaneo 2, direct Steam Deck competitor), 120Hz+1080p+powerful APU isn't the best choice for handhelds because, well, that means lower battery life, and current lithium batteries are limited by physics. Graphene batteries can probably solve this issue, but God knows how long will it take for them to end in consumer electronics.

well one thing these companies do is either:
1 - try to match the price and the performance suffers
or
2 - go all out to outdo the Steam Deck and then ruins their chances by the massive price increase

Asus putting out their handheld and you buying it is definitely a safer bet then some Chinese no-name company where you won't get any support if something goes wrong. But I still consider that comparing these new powerful handhelds to steamdeck is highly misleading to the customer. And I see youtubers and journalists doing this constantly. They put up some clickbaity name of "SteamDeck is done" or something similar and then show you 1000+ dollar device. If you are looking for a powerful handheld device and don't have a set budget - of course taking Asus Rog Ally would be more logical step then buying a steamdeck, but it's hardly a challenger.
steamdeck with it's starting price of 400$ is and will be the king until someone can compete with the price. For around 1000$ I will simply upgrade my main PC or build a new one for gaming. Handheld gaming device for many is sort of a gimmick. A plaything to throw money at. Sure you get SteamOS and desktop mode, but can you truly hand to hearth say you use it? I don't. And I am rather sure that for majority it's the same.
So I say - No, it in no way is a challenger to steamdeck unless it can meet the performance for a similar price. Which I highly doubt they can. Valve didn't exclude 120Hz display for fun.
What I am excited is to see bigger brands picking up this handheld device market which Valve kickstarted.

truly i am also scared of what the price will end up as - no way i can afford 1k+ on a handheld

In the end its just an expensive toy - nothing more nothing less.
At least getting an expensive laptop or PC actually gives you fully fledged PC along with possibility to play games. But even with desktop mode I don't see SteamDeck ever taking the role of main PC. I value that I have another possibility to do that of course. But even on trips I still take my laptop+steamdeck with me.
So while with my current workload, travel times and being in the middle of moving - having handheld which I can bring up for 20-30 minute gaming session in my office or on sofa while my GF watches TV - its perfect. But even with that I had to ponder for a month or two whether I really want to get it for 420 EUR. So definitely interesting to see where the market will go. Will it be able to drop down to acceptable price (At least for an average earning person)?

Not when you get people still paying 1000+ for a mobile phone, it's a fools market.
I have a steamdeck, planned to play with it in the garden, in bed, and i am like i got a pc (2080TI) that costed me 2500 euro, and right in front of me, with a keyboard, mouse and big screen, why hassle with something small?

Agree that its a fools market. But phone still has that useful thing called phone. People still sort of need a smartphone. So they can easily make budget ones bad and then just sell high end ones with stats you don't need, like huge CPU power and RAM...Which is for some 90% most likely wasted on scrolling instagram. Then just take out the stuff people really want in low end phones (camera for example) so it would be obsolete enough for you to want to go for higher tier phone.
Handheld gaming device market is sort of trying to piggy back on the fact that the device can be used as a fully functional PC. But I just don't see that argument really having anything against laptops. And more against example you mentioned. I do love the steamdeck for myself as I rarely get time to game more then half an hour at a time. So powering up my big PC is a no go. thats partly due to still having HDD, but still.. But I still see gaming on the big PC a most comfortable choice of course as well.
So I wouldn't say its a hassle to game on portable device, but considering it hardly could be main gaming device for most, anything close to 1k is already too much. To be honest I believe the majority of the sales for these companies are people who come from developed countries and earn 40-50k a year if not more. for them the 1k for a toy is almost nothing. And this is where I see it unfair to compare SteamDeck with something like Rog Ally or any other 1+k handheld PC. Of course I would go for Porsche instead of Opel, but it really isn't in the same category to make sense in comparing the two.

Well Asus know their shit, but considering ROG is their high end brand, the Ally will be pretty darn expensive

If they had released this around the same time as Steam Deck I might have been tempted. But right now I can't see any reason why it should replace my Deck, Performance of the Deck has been sufficient to entertain me for hundreds of hours in that one year.
Sure, I do want several improvements. But I'd rather want them from a Deck 2 for a better price in 2-3 years.

Windows and it's gonna be $800+, NOPE.
I think they are missing the point of the SD? the SD is not supposed to replace a $1500 gaming tower PC. It's supposed to be a portable PC, and at the same time affordable!

I might be biased, but based on this Ayaneo 2 review, Windows on a console-like device is a deal breaker. That's even before I've heard the price.

I already have a steamdeck so i wont be getting it but I'm happy to see an arms race for handheld gaming pcs.

So, a couple of updates here.
ROG Ally is set to release in May. The price is rumored to be lower than $1000, but I still don't believe that. How? Valve can sell at a loss since they are a platform owner. ASUS isn't one.
Mysterious APU is revealed to be a Ryzen Z1, designed specifically for handhelds (along with a more powerful Z1 Max). Z1 is 2.8 TFLOPS, Z1 Max is 8.6 (XSS, XSX and PS5 have 4, 12 and 10 TFLOPS respectively). 15-30W TDP. For example, DOOM Eternal with medium settings in 1080P on Ally runs in 70-80 fps.
What I wonder is if all of the info regarding Z1 is true, does that mean we finally got an actually good non-Apple APU for ultrabooks?
Current AMD top is 5700G that has TDP of 65W and 2.1TFLOPS.

$699 in US/€799 in EU for 16/512 version with Z1 Extreme.
Version with Z1 and 256Gb storage (no info regarding RAM) comes this Fall and will be $100 cheaper.
No idea how they managed to achieve that price tag.
Performance compared to Steam Deck
That’s great, but no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t approach the Steam Deck’s battery life.
And yet, my Ally actually turned itself off at three hours, 38 minutes, not four-plus hours, perhaps because Asus’ battery always seems to drain more quickly when it’s nearing its end.
On Steam Deck, meanwhile, the least demanding games consume as little as six watts (6.7 hours) on a charge, and I can usually manage two hours out of moderately intensive titles like Control with a tweak or two. With the Ally, I’m seeing an hour and a half.
The PC port of PlayStation 2 title Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time consumed around 8.5 watts on the Deck and 12.5 watts on the Ally, to give you another point of comparison.

i just hope i dont have to see their armory crate software inside ... the last time i had to play support for a friend because this software managed to mess with his audio.
apart from the price i see 3 possible problems. 1. parts for the ally, if it fails you may have a tough time finding parts for it. 2. asus support, i saw a video about asus today from gamers nexus and lets say they try to void your warranty if your board got updated with the latest bios. also if you may don't download it you may risk damage by a wrong preset made from asus themselves in the bios. i wont trust them about support. 3. Battery life, thats one thing that could hold the usability from the ally ... not more than 2 hours from early reviews on indie games and on triple a less than a hour of gameplay. also it draws ~5w when idling ... that is a lot for a handheld
the deck got more buttons to set. the ally got a 120hz display, which is nice, it is silent enough, got ok speakers and got the strongest integrated gpu on the market.
