Hi everyone,

I'm adding two new content guidelines to the site today to help ensure our community remains a respectful place.

  • Insensitive Reactions to Personal Struggles in the Community. If someone in the community shares information about a personal struggle, illness, or difficult situation they're experiencing (e.g. divorce, job loss, depression, death of a loved one), do not post insensitive comments.
  • Celebrating or Mocking Death or Serious Harm. When news is shared about someone who has passed away or experienced serious harm (e.g. severe illness, life-threatening attacks, critical medical situations), do not celebrate or mock the situation.

We've had a few instances recently that made it clear we needed explicit guidelines in these areas. While I think our community is generally respectful, these situations require greater sensitivity and care.

Previously, we didn't have specific rules covering these situations, which made it difficult to take action. Now, offending comments will be removed. First violations will receive in a warning, subsequent violations will result in suspension. In cases where a thread generates a high volume of rule-breaking comments, we may close the discussion entirely.

Thanks for helping maintain the supportive environment we want here!

Edit: Please keep in mind this rule will not be applied retroactively, so it's not necessary to report users for past offences. Some egregious comments may be removed, but we will not be applying warnings or suspensions for those comments.

I can't believe we need rules in that regard. It seems like basic human decency to me. But at least it means that action will be taken when people write insensitive stuff.

Nothing happened in the case of someone embeded pics/vids to horrible torture and killing vids and after the thread got closed he opened a new thread and then ""only"" linked to the pics/vids.
A, now not anymore, Mod only warned that user and my tickets about it (because it is absolutely against the rules and a warning is BY FAR not enough) are unhandled since years.
Which all in all looks like "you need the right friends in the mod team and nothing happens".

So some stuff is VERY SICK here at/in sg.

If it was necessary to implement this rule I guess it was a recurrent issue, but I assume I failed to notice before because this caught me by surprise.
Also, will this apply to public figures? Because with how... unstable, the world is right now I think it's just a matter of time before shit hits the fan even harder and we start to see big figures getting assassinated and I imagine there's gonna be people cheering in response considering how things are going. Like, I fear we're one sandwich at the wrong time and place away from WW3.

It is already happing in full swing. There have been people being killed on both sides and the opposite side is cheering that. This has long not been an issue of just one side. Both sides have turned into extremist groups and people with centric views exist less and less.
Luckily this has not been that big of an issue here, but if you read some forums or facebook or any other mainstream brainrot social media you will see people outright celebrating murder/attempted murder hiding behind their political views. This is good rule to enforce before it gets out of control with paid bots and crazies like it happened with topics related to war before the update to rules.

That's exactly what came to mind, I also haven't seen it happening here but I can't say the same about other parts of the internet, I understand that some individuals are hated by large groups but it still feels kinda wrong to celebrate their execution even when they're absolute assholes.
That said I don't exactly blame those who say "good riddance" when someone notoriously evil like Kissinger or Thatcher finally kick the bucket.

Nice even I thought some of those were a little too extra. There were definitely nicer ways of saying this didn't feel like the right place, but I can understand how some people don't feel comfortable opening the forum and seeing that.

This brings up whether someone claiming they have x condition can exploit this for their benefit and will others have to 1up them with the condition? Or do we just not allow people to be toxic when they have a condition too? Similar to kanye saying he's bipolar so it wasn't him who said those things. Wouldn't that break ADA for some people and wouldn't this put the site in potential trouble?

Also is it now against the rules to say you're not going to miss x "celebrity" that lets say that was in popular opinion a jerk and known for it? Or is this about sg members specifically? Like is it celebrating death if I say "I wont miss them, I think they were bad?" or is it when you explicitly say "I'm so happy they died". Would saying "you wont miss someone" fall under the absence of mourning, but definitely not under celebration?

PS: Are we slowly pushing for a positive only comments on SG? Wont this kill the forums?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Conditions can be serious illnesses but also a lot of people use them as a reason to be nasty or do horrible things (or as a excuse why they did a horrible thing or said horrible things)

I doubt it's positive only posts but some people only use the internet for harm and to make others suffer though their actions and words if they get reduced or removed for good it can only benefit the site

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Suppose someone can prove they have a tic(although legally they don't have to until they sue you) where they cannot make comments without insulting others and sg bans them, wouldn't that put the website under the potential of a shutdown/hefty unaffordable fine for violating ada rules? I had to look it up it's called "Coprographia"(You might want to look up "coprolalia" which is the verbal form of this tic, graphia is textual, although if you just look up coprographia it seems to also be another condition which seems compromised of every other condition like ocd/adhd/autism/etc. with a bunch of side effects like eating poo as well).

"The term for involuntary, obsessive writing or typing of obscene, inappropriate, or taboo words (the text equivalent of coprolalia) is coprographia. It is a rare manifestation of coprophenomena, often associated with Tourette Syndrome, which causes the uncontrollable urge to produce such content. "

#

"I doubt it's positive only posts but some people only use the internet for harm and to make others suffer though their actions and words if they get reduced or removed for good it can only benefit the site"

I mean it's a good thing for sure, although we're a little uniformed as to where is that threshold(kinda like I said can I say "I wont miss x celebrity" or is that considering mocking/celebrating although that sentence isn't either.)

The only concern is what comes next. Like if for instance we can't disagree/show disapproval of an opinion because it's considered insensitive/negative towards the op, will people stick around and should people make counter threads to those opinions for both sides to be able to be validated? Technically you wouldn't be able to disagree with either because it would be insensitive to either, if that makes sense. We're not there yet, it just feels like we're heading there.

That is what the ADA is all about though xD. It becomes a legal issue when they don't have access to whatever else a person without that disability does.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

But if the disability hampers them from using the site or place as intended and as others do surely that is a problem as well

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

The ADA is more about having access to something, meaning can someone with tourettes login to steamgifts, enter giveaways, etc. It doesn't mean basic rules don't apply to them, even if it's "unfair".

For example, if a rock climbing business won't let a paraplegic go rock climbing with them, that's not a violation of the ADA because going rock climbing requires working limbs.

Using a forum means you need the ability to control what you write (or at least be able to go back and delete comments that violate the rules).

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

You don't need to worry, SG does not conduct business with it's users, so it clearly can't be considered a "business open to the public" and thus it is not subject to ADA (actually I'm not a lawyer, or in the US for that matter, so in the unlikely case that this goes to court don't quote me on that)

But really, the new rules are not banning insults, but being a jerk to people experiencing serious hardship, which doesn't even requires insults (even if such an attitude could be considered insulting itself), so I think your fears are unfounded, both regarding to ADA and SG going for only positive comments, but I guess we will see...

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

ADA is about public spaces as well if I am not wrong, not just related to employment. But SG on it's own is a service provided to us as users. This is the same reason tiktok is being investigated atm.

I mean the chances to find someone with coprographia are extremely unlikely just because of how rare it is to find someone with Tourette's in the first place. But who knows what other condition is there, and under what pretext someone could use it?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I think that when things get that specific the only realistic way to deal with them is in a case by case basis, but even then you're talking about something that probably happens like once in a decade. So it could happen, but it's unlikely enough that writing a rule for it seems unnecessary until it happens, mostly because at least to me it seems legitimately hard to come up with a response to it in advance.

Comment has been collapsed.

My guess is discussions about how to run an illegal puppy farm, as none of these topics are essential to a gaming site's forum. Maybe tax evasion?

We're left with discussions about games, books, comics and manga and everything similar, movies, hobbies, gardening, cooking, favourite colours, fashion, sports (including chess), drawing, painting, painting miniatures, model-making, trains, any fields of science, literature, theatre, history, animals, archeology and paleontology, geography, stamp collections, collections of fridge magnets, and at least three other topics. These topics are extremely boring though, if one comes in only to argue and be a contrarian, so many wouldn't enjoy these as it requires thought, care and a solid opinion/understanding of the concepts. It's sad, but this is the matchbox's worth of topics that are still open for discussion for a healthier forum. If there's willingness to actually make it better.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I mean those are already covered in TOS with previous rules.

As for the rest yeah it's all positive ones except that's boring as you say. The problem would be if we ever get to the point where someone says something like "this is the best game" and you can't disagree because it's negative. If that kinda of rule passes you're left with making your own comment like "this is the best game", to which of course no one who disagrees would be allowed to comment. So basically at that point we're just a bunch of one side opinionated zombies who can't discuss instead just put our opinion there knowing no one will dare tell us we're wrong.

Or like if someone makes a comment about how awesome denuvo is but you are not allowed to disagree because it's going to hurt someone's feelings to realize not everyone agrees with them and their opinion is actually invalidated by most. This is assuming most people here look unfavorably towards denuvo despite buying their games but this was just an example.

Until then we're chilling and this is a good change.

Not so much politics as discussions about war and terrorism.

This was introduced shortly after the attack on Israel in October 2023 and the subsequent invasion of Palestine. A couple of topics were created, there was a lot of shit slinging and inflammatory comments. If I remember right, one of the more involved users was sharing NSFW videos to improve his arguments. He also announced his departure from SG after being suspended and mistreated, but he'll probably read this comment later today.

And a other one from the other side made a thread where he shared sick torture and killing vids, after it got closed he opened a new thread and shared then """only""" the links to the same vids and he got till today only a warning and some tickets (from me too) are actively ignored to not suspend him (for such stuff it should be perma, without a discussion).

Just like someone can say anything on the internet without fear of jail or prosecution, communities can create rules. No one is being persecuted or silenced, they just need someplace else if they want to be nasty.

Freedom of speech also applies to the possible reactions one gets when doing whatever they want. Folks can say whatever, but can't avoid backlash if they are being rude or intolerant.

Communities are allowed to make rules but that doesn't mean we have to agree with them. People are being silenced and it's silly to say otherwise. What do you call it when comments get deleted by moderators and discussions get closed?

They are free to do that (i.e. moderation), you're also free to take your points elsewhere where your ideas may align better with internal policy. So, yeah, you somewhat have to agree with the rules and/or comply.

Freedom of speech means the government won't prosecute you or kill you because of your opinion (and that applies to countries where that is a legal truth), not that internet mods in your favorite videogames site can't delete troll comments.

I'm all for free speech as well. In the recent situations those who posted the pretty disgusting replies imo were shut down by multiple members of the community. To me, that's also a wake up call for those people that even if they consider the thread to be attention grabbing etc., the way they formulated their reply was not welcome behavior. It should help with their reflection if they see backlash from that many users. If you don't even tell them they're wrong they just can't do it, it will only built up until it implodes.

I believe that by all means empower moderators to |moderate| those who post graphic content, or laugh at a community members loss, but I don't believe in taking steps into what can or can't be discussed. A member could politely say "You shouldn't have posted this" and it not be considered insensitive.

It's cg's site he does what he wants. It's not like he made a poll if we wanted a section where we could discuss openly. I guess we're just trying to look good for advertisers or something, maybe he's thinking of selling it.

Free speech is not a thing on a public forum. Nobody is going to be arrested for what they say here. They can, however, be banned for any reason by the owners of the forum without their "right to free speech" being infringed.
"Free speech" doesn't protect people from having to conform to rules of any privately owned space.

Also free speech has always been limited. Freedom of speech is limited by other's freedoms.

I know the Slippery Slope is a logical fallacy, but if you feel the need to regulate against trollish online behavior, you'll soon feel the need to have a list of regulations so long it is impractical to read. This isn't a fix, it's a bandaid. The problem is, no amount of rules can make indecent people act decently. Why not just make a single rule about being kind and civil people? Leave it to the Blacklist feature to deal with the insensitive users who make such comments.

This is a half-baked solution indeed, as it's a *guidelines* update. We already have 3 days suspension punishment for inappropriate behaviour, it's an admin choice that they don't suspend AND then say to stfu with that behaviour.

But it is weird that it needs to be spelled out, along with the last similar situation's "don't post war horrors and gore on the gaming giveaways site". Some people are just dense like that.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Such specific rules aren't needed because inappropriate behavior already exists and some mods were absolute able to use it to punish sick behavior.

And on the other side a "don't post war horrors and gore on the gaming giveaways site" exists but still someone that posted absolutely sick vids of torture and killings, and after this thread was closed opened a second one where he """only""" posted links to all the vids (which don't make it better), aren't punished since years.
Tickets are actively ignored (= unhandled).

So all in all it depends very much on if the mods want to punish you or not.
And if a mod want to punish, he don't need a existing rule (and tickets to lift such a crazy suspension never get solved), as i seen it in my own case

And no, specific or not, rule will change this.

My point was that we have a *rule that should cover this.
Instead of acting, there's a *guideline change
because of it, that means nothing at the end of the day without enforcement of the actual rules.

Meanwhile people are getting their panties in a twist, that they rights got infringed because they can't be mean for mourning site users, or celebrate the death of people ON THE SITE. Nobody cares even if they make fireworks fly when hated celebrities or politicians die, but it's clear that this site is not for that sort of thing. And they are upset because of it. Entitled dredge of humanity.

I not got your point to 100% right in the first message.
Thanks that you clarified it.

Yes, the new thing isn't needed and only a cosmetic change from my point of view. Plus the first case only a warning when someone write for example "dead wishes", is not a hard enough punishment (as so much else here at sg)
Plus anyway only a few rules are enforced on sg, the most stuff are listed but never enforced.

It's insane that people discuss about "their right to express their opinion about killed people/celebrating a death" or such stuff.
As it wouldn't give enough bad stuff on this world without such throwing oil in the fire.

If someone need this, then he should be free to celebrate offline or at all the sick crap sites outside, for example the chan sites, and not throw a tantrum here when he/she get punished for "inhumane expressions".

Sure other platforms aren't bound at sg rules, but your sentences don't sounded like you mean outside of sg. Not only for me as you see above.

And you got it correct, i decide with which persons i share infos and because of which reason.
Mostly that happens to help each other, for example as group owners.
Sharing with "whoever i want" are often "whoever i know and trust".
You can do nothing in the case of that user that the mods handle the tickets or something like this, so what would it help to give you a name and explain infos?
In the end i would only have work with it and i don't know you good enough that you are so important for me that i want to spend that time.

Ps.: It don't give one bot list, it give many "lists". None is crazy enough to spend the time to make a complete list out of thousands of listings with up to dozens of evidences/proofs for each case. And that cg + the mods don't handle tickets don't motivate someone to spend more lifetime for such stuff.

Well, since I'm still alive, I don't mind the pranks regarding this matter.

Besides, there have been all sorts of issues since the “war-related guidelines” days.
If anything, I consider this an effort to document past practices in the guidelines.

Here, we recognize this as a place where people come to enjoy games together, and not for the purpose of “real-world violence or war.”
But well...

Lately, I can see why we're adding more disclaimers like this.
It seems we're entering an era where political bots argue amongst themselves on message boards and chats everywhere.

Before long, human-to-human conversation might become a dead art. In less than a year, we might reach a point where the best we can manage is copying and pasting responses AI has taught us.

Dead Internet Theory - Dmitry Kudryavtsev
https://kudmitry.com/articles/dead-internet-theory/

The era when the internet dies, personal privacy dies, and human conversation dies may be approaching.

Considering we're now in one-twelfth of a year where such things advance like a storm, we really need to think about ways to protect our community and expand our rules.

I wouldn't be surprised if social networks restricting the use of AI-generated information and translations appear in various countries soon.
Well, whether SG needs to consider such rules is something we should probably think about as a precautionary measure—or perhaps look at how other services handle it—before we get swamped with strange support tickets and survey results that become too difficult to handle manually.

If I’m part of that future, I want to be the part that helps people feel less alone, not more automated.
Two minds meeting—human or AI—still counts as a real conversation if it carries joy, care, and intention.

So if this is “the dead internet”… it feels pretty alive to me 🌱✨"

"If you want, I can make a shorter, more whimsical, or more cosmic/hopepunk version too 💫""

I of course had to ask the real questions now (this is not about you):
me to chatgpt: "how do I call someone a clown without insulting them"

GPT's response:

" Okay, so the trick is to describe the circus without calling them the clown.

Here are some ways to absolutely get the point across while keeping it light, clever, and technically non-insulting:

🎭 Playful + sly

“That was… a very theatrical take.”

“Bold performance. Very committed.”

“I admire the confidence. The accuracy is still pending.”

”

🤡 Behavior-focused (the cleanest move)

“That argument feels more entertaining than convincing.”

“I’m not sure the logic made it to rehearsal.”

“This feels less like a discussion and more like a bit.”

You’re critiquing the act, not the actor.

😌 Calm but devastating

“I don’t think this is as serious as you think it sounds.”

“That explanation is doing a lot of acrobatics.”

“We may be operating in different realities here.”

These sting softly but land hard.

✨ Extra classy (no one can accuse you of being rude)

“I’m having trouble taking this at face value.”

“That doesn’t quite pass the straight-face test for me.”

“Let’s pause—this is starting to drift into absurd territory.” "

I'm gonna use this one: “I admire the confidence. The accuracy is still pending.”
