Hello people! I would like to hear your opinions on RPG Maker VX Ace and HumbleBundle Weekly RPG maker bundle.

You get to save a lot of money on this bundle and you get the chance to create those cool pixel RPG games. But is it worth anything?

I mean like what variety can you create? Of course there can be many different stories, maps and characters, but games created here are all going to be repetitive, right?

Has anyone tried to do something big with this software? I am good at maths and physics, but also games and coding interest me. Algorythms aren't too hard for me, it is more hard for me to make the correct code :D Will this bundle give me any experience in this and will it satisfy my wish for making games?

I used it for a few hours, learned the basics and started working on a horror style game.
But now, I realized not that many are going to play it, since the style of this game is in 2D and not-so-modern.
Well for you, I recommend planning first before buying. There's no coding, just scripting. Maybe some coding, but mainly scripting.
Well, it's also pretty flexible, so you can make something "big". Search for successful RPG Maker titles to get an idea about what you can make.
Edit: Oh, forgot to say. If you work on something medium-sized alone (with custom images, sounds, etc.), you're gonna have a bad time.

I used rpg maker 2000 back then around the time rpg maker xp came out. So this rpg maker vx ace was an instabuy for me.
These softwares are quite easy to learn and use. Also it has a lot of tutorials and scripts on the internet. If you only use commands you can make mostly rpgs, visual novels, maybe platformers - i'm not sure about the last one, the older version of the software did need scripts for that maybe this one too.
With scripts you can make almost anything. pretty good platformers, real-time combat, fire emblem-like combat. Before i forget the game uses Ruby language.

The games you can make with RPG Maker are the same in the sense of all FPS games being the same. That is, you can easily vary the story, graphics and mechanics (through scripting), but you're still using the same paradigm. Several commercial games have been made with RPG Maker (Wikipedia).

The short of it is, it all depends on what you want to do. If you're interested in creating an RPG, then RPG Maker will let you implement your story and RPG mechanics more easily than if you were to write it yourself. If you're interested in a 3D RPG or something clearly outside the scope of RPG Maker, then it won't help you.

Exactly, the best example imo is To The Moon - make something different, something unique and no matter how shit the graphics are, how limited the mechanics are..you'll have something good.

The potential is unlimited, as long as you know what to do and have what to use.

There is full implementation of outside scripts in their own scripting language.

There are, for instance, many different types of battle-replacers (the vanilla one is closest to Final Fantasy, I'd say, but there are Fire Emblem battle mods, Zelda-style battle mods and such), a first-person thing (though only for XP, I think), and many others.

Here is a list of a bunch of scripts for VxAce, have a look!

Zelda style battle script require pixel movement script, which is much incompatible with the game core engine, so I don't recommend it.

The biggest hurdle will probably be making the graphics stand out. The characters especially are a problem, those sprites are TINY.

Look up RPG Maker VX Ace Scripts and see if anything looks interesting to you. I've already seen a set of scripts that work together to make a Pokemon game (Extremely glitchy, mind you. It crashed on me when I tried to plant a berry, when I tried to go off the side of the screen, when I tried to use the wrong item...) , a bunch of different battle styles and skill/skill point systems, and a 'how to make a text adventure' tutorial.

Anyway, it's only a dollar if you get the lowest tier. I don't know if paying the extra for the DLCs is worth it, even if they are 'exclusive'.

Back when XP was the latest one out, I began learning RGSS (the scripting language used by RPG Maker) and I attempted to make a Resident Evil fan game, however, very much in the vein of the first three RE games on PSone. I attempted using pre-rendered backgrounds I ripped out of some of the RE games, a game called Galerians, and anywhere else I could find 'em. Then I tried using scaling to have 2D images walk around in and interact with those backgrounds. Needless to say, I was in WAY over my head, and the project never succeeded; but it was still fun trying to make it all work. Learned quite a few things by simply challenging myself.

I also tried using RPG Maker XP to create a side-scrolling brawler based on the Street Fighter universe, complete with their special moves and all. That project was never fully complete. Farthest I ever got was figuring out how to map the directional keys to walk and such while still being able to use them to do special moves. I was eventually able to get Ken to do a hadoken and walk around the screen with a basic kick and punch move each lol

I've used it for years, just now bought it so I could make my games without the terrible community breathing down my back whenever I release something on the official forums as opposed to fan forums or imageboards. You can make some pretty great things with it, but it's really not for everybody. 90% of the people who bought it are either going to quit trying to use it, or make something terrible with all the default assets and try to sell it on steam. A word of warning to anyone using the RTP, I know it's there for you to use, but please don't use it. I have a terabyte of rpg maker games (I'm an avid fan of the software, what can I say?) and I can name only one or two games that used the RTP and weren't terrible.
