Depending on cookies usage, the ad might not be targeted at all. Besides, there are women here. And lots of guys who have significant others who might be pregnant. The world of gamers don't exist in a bubble is, I think, what Lugum's reply was about.

Yeah but, by that logic, there is no need to target ads at all (since basically everywhere you can find people who might be interested in any product you're advertising). While I tend to agree with this (mostly because I don't like profiling), I'm not sure most advertisers do ^^

Apparently very little of advertising online is actually targeted. It's just an excuse they use to collect information either for selling or for the sake of collecting it... in case they find a way to make money off it one day.

I don't like assuming the worst. Especially when it's with a person with actual power over me. Even if they might not be actively looking to disadvantage me, they might still be more harsh towards me due to an inherent bias from that encounter.
...but odds are this rule-breaking (a rule which shouldn't be a rule to begin with due to the laxness of the subjectivity for what counts as a personal attack and what doesn't) behavior will not be punished at all.
Were I a mod however, I'd legit take him aside and give him a warning at the very least. "Equal rights and equal lefts" as they say.
Hopefully he learns from it, but looking at his responses, it's unlikely.

Though I don't agree with xarabas, I wouldn't see this as a personal attack. Viewing a thread as useful or useless is very subjective. Of course, it's personal criticism of another user's behaviour, but it isn't insulting (like your own example below). There is the off topic category and threads usually don't get closed because they contain some spam postings. So whether or not xarabas likes that, it's nothing bad about being off-topic or create "useless" threads.

Fair enough. The whole "subjectivity" part flows around all of this, I feel. Personal attacks can't happen here unless there are physical or mental consequences. There are very rare situations where physical damage can be made (like doxxing or some other similar stuff) and mental damage can't be proven. People were offended by milk at one point. People are still offended by a frog meme. Yet also there are people who claim that nothing should be able to offend a person and therefore you can say whatever.
Who really knows. Personally, I don't think this should be seen as a personal attack either, but I also don't think my situation where I said "You would complain regardless" with a vulgarly excessive and ridiculous description is also a personal attack (that includes the "victim" themselves). Yet here we are.

Who knows. Personally I wouldn't. But personally I wouldn't also dare say something like this anymore either (at this current point in time) since like 50% of the rules are based on the opinions of the mods. This can be qualified as a personal attack if the mod wants it to be and I think that's the real problem.

In this particular case, I have been speaking more like an SG user and not at all as a support member. Unfortunately, there is no way to distinguish between those two with a tag next to my username so I have to explain it this way. I have no personal issue(s) with Lugum whatsoever, I'm merely pointing out a baffling irony in his 4th point.

In the past i made some "joke" threads, usually in response to others posting silly things, and yeah some others from which maybe some would say a bit immature, but i always did it with a giveaway and some might say that's still not an excuse i grant them all that, but atleast there is something with it unlike this one.
The whole forum and the vibe at that time was different (apparently i even missed a scolding support member that was here in the real beginning), the people were different, all together some of us were sometimes also in for those immature jokes. The forum changed, i changed.
But i haven't even done any of that for like the last 2 years or so?
What i give away, all are with i believe non spammy topics, post news about game stuff, or sometimes just funny news i think to just lighten up things here (which just looking at how toxic things get in this topic alone) is not a bad thing once a while.
Heck i couldn't even afford to gift anything for 4-6 months after tremorgames closed down, so also a period i posted a lot less.
And I did a weekly jigidi thing for over 2 years, a yearly advent one, some in between ones, i think i contributed mostly in a positive way.

Also we can't see with what cap you speak with, so perhaps it's then just not to say such things at all to avoid confusion but even as a just a member, i found this a stingy remark really based on nothing and yeah a bit of an attack.

Same here. The problem is that things escalated quickly and went from fun and jokes to suggestions about "eating bullet" and other nasty stuff. Won't link any of discussions - not sure if these wounds are healed and these people are around here :) Anyway - fun and jokes ended in eternal hatred and weeks long suspensions.
Since then forum moderation was increased and at least for me it became less interesting. Worst part is that different mods are enforcing existing rules in different ways and not much have changed in faq or tos or guideliness - it's best way ever to learn about "new hidden rule" or customised rule interpretation when you read about it on suspension screen :3

A thread for Epic giving $10 discount for 2FA was posted. A user was against Epic in that thread and I thought that while I usually am critical of them, that this was a solid move. The user posted a snarky comment and I responded rather passive-aggressively.
Now, this is the part that got me banned specifically: (*I swear to God, if I get banned for this again...)

Now, mind you, the language isn't nice here at all. While I personally use "fuck" as frequently as "the", then it still doesn't mean that others do and it's whatever.
But it was cited that the ban was due to it being a "personal attack". Now, maybe I'm mistaken here, but saying that Epic could insert a vulgar thing and add a deprecating quip and you (the user) would still complain isn't really even a personal insult. Well, the real insult here, when removing the fluff is just that "You'll complain regardless".
After the ban, the unsuspend request I sent (for mainly just hoping to get another mod's perspective and perhaps further explanation why the other user wasn't suspended for doing the same stuff) was responded to by the same mod who added that:

Was a bit excessive even if we consider the tone of the conversation. This "comparison" was in really bad taste, to say the least.

But if this is suspension-worthy, then a mod, a person in power, literally just saying "That question could also be asked for the 99% of useless topics you open yourself" is just as bad since while he didn't use naughty language, he dedicated the entire comment to go after you.

Maybe i wouldn't really say the wording itself is comparable (although i agree saying fuck you to a person or a company are both completely different things).
But i atleast agree(d) with you that it was an attack, but i don't have a desire to see him get suspended over it, some might think differently but i am not spiteful and i mean that and what i stated i just want clear set rules that goes for everyone, either everyone gets suspended or not for such things (and i prefer that, for it all not to become too tight here), and that's missing and i don't see that coming anytime soon.

I've had unblocked ads on SG once, then they gradually started being disruptive (videos with sound etc) so I enabled blocking here as well. If you don't like them, block them. If you still want to support the website, you can support cg on Patreon instead and get ad-free on SG.

The pregnancy ads? (sigh) The advertisers really do not know that I am not shopping for a car right now either, and so that happens. They do a lot of guess in targetting ads, but they gain much value when they have some idea about who is seeing the ad. Go search for some information on cancer and visit some cancer care sites--watch how the cancer pharmaceutical companies will love to advertise to you even though you have no cancer.

I've come to the conclusion that Google Ads is fundamentally broken. The majority of their ads displayed to me seem to be completely irrelevant, which is inexcusable for a company that has data on almost everything I do on the internet.
