My Mitsubishi Colt did pretty well. I got it almost 8 years ago as a 4 year old second hand car with 40,000 miles on the clock (it now has 135,000) and its been fairly problem free (until the clutch went last year) and pretty economical. But its currently stuck in first gear with a gear stick that won't engage. I'll see if I can get it fixed but as both myself and my wife need a car to get to work (I can just about manage to get to and from work via public transport but it adds about 3 hours onto my usual commute of 90-120 minutes but my wife works nights so public transport not an option around where I live) I think I'll have to invest in a new motor. Your recommendations are eagerly anticipated ..

What Car Should I Get Next

You don't need a car - use public transport
Sell the house, the wife and the kids and get an Aston Martin
Get a sensible second hand motor
Other option (post below)

Budget? Model?

I can say get a 2-seater for 40k....or an 8-seater for 1600 bucks :P

No more than seven grand, reliable, economical and large enough to fit the wife, 2 kids, tent & a case in for trips away.

Unless you advise me to sell the house etc. as above ;)

I wish I could be of more help but unfortunately I don't know shit about cars, even tho I got a license. Never drove much after that either.
Press F to pay respects to the loyal Colt tho!

So public transport takes up to 5 hours? I'm assuming thats round trip, but even so, thats lengthy. Personally, I'd bite the bullet and go for the repair.

That is a round trip but includes 10 minutes to walk to the bus stop, 30 minutes travel between where I live & Derby, around 10 minutes wait for bus to Nottingham, 45 minutes between Derby & Nottingham and 20 minute walk from bus stop to work. That's on average. Sometimes the bus is full and so have to wait for next one etc.

If I've learned one thing dealing with cars that continually break down, it's leave the thinking to the mechanic. You may think it's something way worse than it might actually be. Find a good, reliable and honest local mechanic near you and see what the cost of checking out what the problem is and then go from there.

Best of luck to you my friend! I hope it work's out to your advantage! :)

Thanks, I'll get the car dropped off to the garage I usually use (and bought the car from) but even if I get it fixed I'm losing confidence in its reliability & its too critical for my wife to get to and from work to leave to chance.

It sounds more like your transmission is the problem.

That is a round trip and only 15 miles each way. Its the getting in and out of Nottingham that takes the time ..

I'd just fix the shift fork, thats what it sounds like to me anyhow. That or get an old war wagon like mine... 97 Chevey Lumina, 157,000 and still going. Sure she spits, farts, coughes, and sometimes poops... but you just can't kill that thing :)

With the price of petrol in the UK my car needs to be pretty fuel efficient to keep costs manageable. Will get the car dropped off at a garage and hope its something simple like the fork that is easily fixed but I do need a reliable car so might just run the colt as a second car until it finally falls apart ;)

Ahhh yeah, UK is much more expensive than USA for fuel. Thats a pretty good idea though, a second car is always a good back up plan :)

How much commute time does driving the 15 miles in first gear add? ... :D
I'd give you the same advice as Fyantastic. Find a mechanic who doesn't laugh at you for asking, get an educated guess on what's broken and what the cost would be. Can't really make a well-founded decision without knowing that, can you? ... I just had my 15 year old, 433,000 km (yep, that's 270,000 miles) E46 revived with new shock absorbers and axle box (right word?) ... was definitely the right decision, that money would never have bought me a comparable car.

Just get an older Volkswagen, they almost never leave you standing but even if that happens parts are cheap and easy to get.

Sounds like a linkage issue, should be a relatively cheap and easy fix. Unless of course its not the linkage and is a pressure plate, then you need to rebuild whole tranny.
