Steam keeps asking to add my telephone number :/

I don't think it's ever asked for my phone number, although I use an authenticator with steam. It sounds very abnormal considering I've never seen it, and it's being repeated every time you restart. I did have to provide a ton of personal information to valve for tax purposes, but that was related to the steam market.

I think it's only if you have beta for now, I got it too

Correct -- that was in the new update released yesterday (which also got rid of the blank Steam - News Update pop-ups that would open every time you exited a game).

Getting the same problem. I've only clicked "not now" so far though. I don't really want to give steam my phone number.

I did give Steam my phone number as I was hoping that Gaben was wanting to call me and ask me what I was wearing, But Steam is still asking for my phone number although if I go to 'Account Details' the phone it is clearly already added.

I guess someone has simply screwed up. And I'm still waiting for Gaben to call...

Yeah beta version, I already bitched about it on their release thread since it keeps showing every time the client is restarted. However another update is already queued, so we shall see.

I heard a rumor that if you add your phone number, Gabe will personally call you. For every 100th person he calls, he gives a clue about the release date of Half Life 3.

It said "connect your smartphone with Steam", but I only own a normal mobile phone. Entered my phone number and received a SMS, I really hope they don't want to send me mails because this will not work for me.

I hate it, no steam profile to view and ALWAYS asking for a phone number!

Same problem for me. I added my number the first time I got asked to do so, and I've checked to make sure it has not "lost" it somehow, but it won't stop pestering me with its green banner.

I don't have the ability to receive SMS messages on my home phone it isn't that advanced!.... it's not even a touch tone! It doesn't even have buttons! It's a rotary on pulse... grrr.
