Please provide a screenshot/details of your problem. I had connection problems back ago and I know exactly the feeling.

Sounds like not a GFWL problem. Maybe you should wait for a while, like fiftykyu said below.

It uses GFWL? If so try to enter the key and stop the internet connection while it's validating. That worked for me in other titles. You will get an offline account thingie.

Don't actually own this game yet, but steam says:
"Notice: We are currently out of product keys for Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition. We have requested them from the publisher and as soon as we have more they will be automatically added to new owner's Steam accounts."
Sounds like you have to wait until more keys appear. Sorry... :(

Try what I told you. Or even if you have any other GFWL title, entering their key instead of this other one migh work (It used to at least.)

there is nowhere to enter a key, i think i will just wait a week and see what happens and then if nothing happens i will do something else

Oh, I had a similar problem with a Batman AA version and solved it by doing that. Sorry that that it's not your case. Anyways I think that they should get more keys in a few days time.
And if you really want to play Dark Souls, well I'd crack it. After all you have paid for it.

I feel sorry for you. In the meantime, I think I will play Dark Souls again and leave some summon signs here and there for new players.

This happened to me when I purchased A-10C during the winter sale. It was on the weekend and Steam ran out of keys for its customers. The publisher will most likely send Steam a batch of keys on Monday when they return to work.

Now you have plenty of time to prepare .. to die :D
