My friend is getting his first computer for PC gaming in order and he wants suggestions for games to play, he's very new to PC gaming (he learns fast though)

This is what I was thinking for him, starting off with good third person action

Essentials:

Witcher 3 (base game + expansion pass)
GTA V
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
Skyrim Special Edition

Worth owning:

Shadow of Mordor GOTY
Mad Max
Space Marine
Tomb Raider (2013 GOTY)

Criteria:

1.) Nothing super complicated / obscure
2.) Games that run well / are well optimized / aren't buggy, don't crash often
3.) Good graphics / fun gameplay

What do you think? Newer games would be better I think, nothing super old / janky.

agree with @MaxThunder "I think you're kind of pushing your favorites onto him" you should get at least one of each. one or two FPS better a good one with a good multiplayer or coop. A few sports can be football, basket why not extreme sports, one RPG, one strategy even there are a lost of ponit and clic games really adictive. a good game with good graphics, and a good one with no so good graphics but a great game, some old classic. the only way to see what kind of games his into it's for him to play as much games as possible. he will find his way on what he likes more.

My personal recommendations coming from a life of console gaming into PC gaming about 2 years ago, these have been hundreds of hours of fun:

  • Batman Arkham games
  • Borderlands 2 GOTY
  • Sonic Racing Transformed
  • Payday 2
  • Left 4 Dead 2
  • Shadow of Mordor
  • The Witcher trilogy
  • Xcom Enemy Unkown

And indie goodness!

  • FTL
  • Rocket League
  • To the moon
  • Kingdom Rush
  • Strider
  • Injustice
  • Super Meat Boy
  • Transistor
  • Bardbarian
  • Unholy Heights
  • Gucamelee

And if you guys are into MOBAs I've tried DOTA and LOL, but the one that took my heart is Blizzard's Heroes of the Storm.

"Newer games would be better I think, nothing super old / janky" newer games are more likely to not have patch fixes & require better PCs so they don't... "Games that run well / are well optimized / aren't buggy, don't crash often"

it'd say umm
-Portal
-Doom
-Quake
-Age of Empires 2 HD

I really dont see a problem here. New to PC gaming? What's the difference really? 90% of titles are in both PC and Consoles.

Depends on what he likes. Get him some old games also, especially strategy. Age of Mythology, Stronghold Crusader, Age of Empires, Empire Earth. From newer ones get him Civ 5, but it eats alot of time.

As for shooters, one of the battlefield titles and first two CoDs. Serious Sam along the line too.

First two Mafia titles for the story feeling.

Euro Truck Simulators if he wants to drive alot in virtual reality and The Sims if he wants to live in one.

I would recommend the following games (all my favourites):

RPGs:

Platformers:

Indie:

Simulation

  • Euro Truck Simulator 2
Not everyone might like this game and I thought I won't like it too, until I got it gifted for free. But this is a really good and relaxing game :)

Quick Time Events

Free 2 Play

  • Brawlhalla
I was thinking, if I should recommend it...
The truth is, it is very much fun to play, even though it is not that easy if you begin with.
I have met some really nice people there and the Devs are great! They listen to what the players want and do what they can to fullfill their wishes.
BUT: Unfortunately the community is getting more and more toxic. That was the reason why I was not sure if I should recommend it.
  • Warframe

The Orange Box meets the criteria. Half-Life 2 is from 2004 but it isn't janky and still looks pretty nice.

If he's a former console gamer I would get him a game with good controller mapping so he can play with a controller if he chooses. The newer tomb raider games are a good choice for that, all well as most of the Assassin's Creed games (just don't get him the badly optimized Unity, all the others run very well). Those two series are some of the most popular third person action games out there. Skyrim is the best choice though since he can mod it, switch from controller to keyboard easily, and switch from first to third person easily.

EDIT: Just saw that he isn't a former console gamer, in that case my suggestions still stand because they're fun, easy games and playing with a controller is a very good way to ease into gaming, since KB&M can be kind of difficult (I'm still trying to get used to it months later)

If they're used to console gaming, why not introduce them to the kind of games that works a lot better on PC? Strategy games, more stat heavy RPGs (like Pillars of Eternity), and games that are easily modded (like Skyrim). That will give them a nice taste of what gaming on a PC has to offer.
