I wasn't planning on getting anything this time, but today I find myself with a bit of disposable income and Fallout 4 is calling to me. However, I've seen reviews saying that the story is not so good and it's practically not a RPG anymore, and that's what's holding me back. It also may be way cheaper next sale but I think 50% off is pretty good for this game. I liked Fallout 3 and loved Fallout New Vegas, largely because of the story/hilarious dialogue choices/atmosphere.
Keeping that in mind, would you say it's worth it to buy Fallout 4? (just the base game, the DLCs are out of the question) For those who have played the game: did you enjoy the story? Have the RPG elements really disappeared?

No giveaway because I have only the exact amount of money for this ;_; maybe next time

Not a bad game, but nothing as good as new vegas or even the story-wise lackluster fallout 3.

The shooting is fun, but the dialogue are boring, most quests are boring and there are few of em to top it. Radiant quests are garbage. The thing is the game was designed for the minecraft liking millenials, hence the settlement building.

Try Fallout 1 and 2 if you havent, you wont be dissapointed by their story. Getting used to the mechanics requires some patience, tho.

Yeah I really need to play 1 and 2, heard great things about them. Would have probably got them this sale if they'd had better discounts... (iirc they were at least 75% off last time, what the f happened?)

1 and 2 are the real Fallouts, 3+ are just Elder Scrolls: FPS and not RPG at all.

I agree that Fallout 3's story is nothing to write home about, though I enjoyed the ambience and remember it fondly because it was the first one I played. But I really loved New Vegas, it felt like a great RPG to me, I'd definitely recommend it. It's worth a chance even for those who hated 3, it is a very different game (in my humble opinion). People I know who have played all of them say that New Vegas is pretty close to 1 and 2 in terms of story quality, humor, etc.
That said, another shitty storyline is exactly what I'm worried about with Fallout 4. And it seems opinions are very divided on this one.

But if you don't care one bit for FPS, no amount of story can fix them. Like shooting relying on your aim, not your stats.

I wouldn´t say the story is shitty...its actually not that bad...
Whats bad about it is that u are very limited in the choices you make
But Im sure this will be resolved by mods at some point

In 4 there is too much sanbox-sims-build-me-a-village gameplay than actual questing and shooting. Instead of carrying on exploring you carry on scavenging every volleyball, toaster, tree, abraxo cleaner and plunger to be able to defend/build a decent places in all the locations of the game to be able to sell your other junk to vendors that you will eventually hire...

The RPG elements (compated not only to F1 and 2 but also New Vegas or 3) are a laugh - flat dialogues that have no real consequences, character progression that doesn't really allow for true customization (with enough levels all characters are the same).

But the shooting is good. The weapons are good. The laughable encounters are still decent and it is still surprisingly satisfying to shoot a million-and-one raider in the face with plasma weaponry and watch him melt. And then do that again.

Fallout 4 is a lot inferior compared to Fallout 3 and especially Fallout: New Vegas. The main story isn't so attractive and the game tries to make you play repetitive missions. All its dlcs till now, except Far Harbor, are a complete JOKE! I got the game when it had a higher price, but I'm not sure it deserves its price. :/

I think in 4 they focuses too much on the shooting and building mechanics and completely forgot about the story and progression
