It's been a long while since my last puzzle thread, and with the new year, I thought it might be the perfect opportunity to start anew.
52 weeks, 52 puzzles, under the form of bite-sized nonograms.
Every Sunday night will be the deadline of a puzzle, and I will try to post them as early as possible.
Wishing you a puzzleful 2020! ~
The links below contain everything you need to access the giveaways I made.
* Region restriction: None at the moment
Here are the generous contributions of fellow SteamGifts members :)
Want to contribute and have a nonogram giveaway of your own? Instructions in the Join the fun! section.
Hint 1 : You might want to know how Nonograms work
Hint 2 : You might want to know how to decode QR codes (I personally recommend phone apps)
Hint 3 : You might want to use a graphical tool like MS Paint / Paintbrush / GIMP
Feedback and ideas are most welcome! ~

This is an effective way to counter bots, and forever expand the puzzlers community :).
You can create a private giveaway and send me the link (or a hint to it) in private through Steam messaging, and I will generate and post the nonogram puzzle that will uncover the link.
You may also link back to the Café in your giveaway description, if you want.

Bump, thanks for unusual puzzles!
I'll have to say it, I hate you and I love you, really, nice puzzles!
Haha I'm okay with that, you would have valid reasons for both ^^ ~
Bump, the Hot Tin Roof give me a hard time, but was able to solve it perfectly
count me in :D
thanks for the fun :)
iwshed there was some site like jigidi for it though. solved 2 nonograms using photoshop.
You're very welcome, glad you're enjoying it!
Yeah I agree with you, it would be nice to have a Jigidi-like interface for making and solving nonograms, that could fit in with the QR code approach of these puzzles.
For now the websites I've seen would require me to manually enter all the clues (and I'm lazy by nature) so I prefer to just code generators that will do it for me ^^.
But I'll be on the lookout for alternatives, thanks for the feedback! <3
You're welcome :)
Wow, that’s an awesome idea
Just solved some of them. Nonograms don't typically show up here so nice one.
btw, you could use some page like https://nonograms.relaxpuzzles.com/create-a-nonogram and send the links
I thought about it, yes, but given as the solution must fit nicely inside the QR code I've decided to go with the generated image instead.
For now with the fill tool in MS Paint I'm able to solve them without too many issues, but yeah once a cell is set to white or black it's quite hard to change our mind. Which could be bothersome to some people depending on their solving style.
One could set the cells to red or green, then convert to black and white when done. ;)
Actually the problem is that by using the Fill tool in Paint, if I mark two neighboring cells the same color, but then later on realize that one of them needs to be changed, I can't use the Fill tool to undo it, as it would also undo all the other contiguous cells.
The same problem would happen if I used red/green.
Like in this example, as soon as I realize the cell (marked in red) is wrong and I try to set it to white, everything next to it becomes white.
Regarding this conversation, I just posted a new comment to gather opinions about this issue.
Interesting I've done Sudoku and the rules feel pretty similar.
Week 4 is broken, it's unsolvable 😢
Check the numbers again please 🙏

Unless I'm doing it wrong I have come to that conclusion as well
I lied I am just very dumb
I solve manually all the puzzles before posting them to make sure that there is one unique answer that can be found without any guessing, but you did make me doubt for a second ^^.
I solved it again without issue, and a few people have entered the giveaway, so it is possible. it can be quite tricky though.
"No barcode was found in this image. Either it did not contain a barcode, or did not contain one in a supported format, or the software was simply unable to find it. Go "Back" in your browser and try another image."
I sent you a friend request to see if my picture is correct
Thanks for the puzzles!
Why you blacklist me without any reason ?
hi, Janediel ( https://www.steamgifts.com/user/Janediel )
Why you are so mean?
blacklist without any reason and delete your message
now even block me on steam too
just because i solve this puzzles and i look likes a bot ???
I think he gonna ignore me forever.
However, I still had some fun to figure out who blacklisted me so i create another GA for whoever saw this.
hint : easy steganography
How about combining itstoohard.com and http://ichrisi.bizhat.com/custom_js/picross_maker.html to make the question can be solved without photoshop?
I thought about it (did not know this specific site but I found other similar ones), but given as each nonogram would need to be manually made, the generation would take more time and be more prone to mistakes from my part.
But I am definitely thinking about possible alternatives.
Unfortunately, I have not yet seen a well working way to link nonograms with GA links. I've solved the one for the TIMEframe... and this will be all for me, unless you are able to change the format. For me it's definitely too much hassle with importing/exporting pics between programs, that are quite awkward to use for this anyway. I didn't look into this in-depth, but on Steam we have free Nonogram - Master's Legacy with Workshop feature, maybe it could be used to create/share nonograms, that give clues for istoohard? I think, it also supports color nonograms.
All the best in 2020 :)
I see what you mean yeah.
Now I have found myself a kind of workaround by installing a QR code scanner app on my phone, so once I'm done solving the nonogram on Paint, I place the answer in the QR code and scan my screen with my phone. That prevents me from having to save the file and then upload it to the website. So now 95% of my time is spent solving rather than trying to get an answer out of my solution. A big improvement from the first couple of times I solved them.
If this can help reduce the tediousness of the process in the meantime while I work on alternatives.
Would this one work? It has a hidden text option too.
It does seem very promising, I'll have to look more into it, but if it works as well at it seems, it will be much easier to manage both for solvers and for me, that's for sure :)
I will look into adapting my code to generate the files that this website takes as input and I'll do a couple of tests.
Thanks a lot for sharing!
Bump for all solved. Thank you, that brought back good old memories of Picross on my Nintendo-Handhelds! Had no problems using GIMP.
I used to play Picross 3D so much on my Nintendo DS, I really liked the 3D twist on it and the creativity of the puzzles and designs.
As for Picross in itself, I played it a little bit but I had a book with tons of 2D Nonograms and I preferred to do them on paper.
Oh I love nonograms! :D
nice idea, will solve some of these when I find time
Fun Usage of Nonograms!
And for future ones, could you post the empty nonogram in a CSV format?
That way one can open them in any table editing program and build the nonogram by coloring in the table cells.
Afterwards a screenshot and paint is enough to combine the two pieces.
But... what exactly do I do with the solutions?
For now they're all generated in image format, but I'll definitely be looking into the possibility of also generating CSVs.
As for the way to use the solutions, here's a small hint: SteamGifts giveaways URLs are constructed in a very specific way.
Wish I had that hint yesterday already xD
But well... the Nonogram was more motivation than the game anyway xD
Thank you, that was fun :)
thanks for sharing! nonograms are my favourite puzzles <3
happy cakeday! 🍰

And only 3 hours left for Week 2 puzzle!
