Stop being so entitled(I hate using this word but it applies here.) Valve is doing you a favor just by having this sale (and every sale they do) and yet the first thing you complain about is no free games. Do you forget what happened for Christmas? They started giving out free stuff and everyone decided to abuse the system and take advantage to get more free stuff than they should have. Which ended up basically ending the event a while earlier than planned.

Also entitled or not, it's just the first day, wait and see what happens.

As such im actually a bit insulted at the generalization that everyone cheated!

But I do agree with your overall thought that people shouldn't just expect free stuff from steam.

It's worth it for them to put things on sale as it temporarily increases the amount of purchases, but giving away free stuff is just what they do because they want to make people happy (They don't need the publicity at this point, that's for sure). You see EA giving away free games on Origin?

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I don't believe that's entirely true. I think, in addition to just wanting to be nice, giving away free stuff offers several benefits to Steam: customer loyalty ("I could buy this on Origin/Desura/etc instead, but then I won't get Steam achievements and contest entries!"), people buying daily deals because they want to get the achievement items, etc.

Okay @ threadstarter.

Fact 1: Steam, is not doing anyone here a favor!? They still take advantage because they make a lot of profit from those sales. Do you believe they would give a shit about the communitys opinion about this sale? They will do it how they can make the best profit with.

Fact 2: This is no fucking kindergarden, its obvious that people always are looking for ways to abuse the system and leech as much as they can, if steam isnt able to avoid this due to cleverer multiaccount protections its their own fault.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

They would make more fucking profit if they DIDN'T have a sale.

They didn't need to have a summer sale. Ever. In any year, they never needed to have ANY FUCKING SALES.

You're acting like an entitled, spoiled brat who should get exactly what he wants, which is free fucking games, which, SURPRISE, Steam makes no goddamn profit off of.

You don't know how sales work at all if you think they'd make more profit by not having them. Many devs including Valve have stated multiple times profits skyrocket during sales.

You should probably go back to school...I guess when the supermarket of your choice has a big big SUPER EVERYTHING ON SALE week you are the one who tells the people that they can be happy that this market gives such a GREAT service to their customers.

Guess next story you wanna tell me is that when Blizzard offers their race change in wow for 10 euro instead of 20 euro its FU CKING INSANE cheap aswell. They dont earn a SINGLE €!

Fact 1: My first post was poorly worded but I was mostly referring to the giving free stuff as the favor bit. Yes I know they make bank every time they have a sale.

Fact 2: So it's the victims fault they didn't protect them self. I'm curious if you are of the opinion that this extends to other things: identity theft, credit card fraud, murder, rape? Or just things you want to take advantage of?

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

If you call Steam a victim. Your government who keeps the rich, rich and the poor, poor are victims aswell. The banks are victims coz everbody only wants to put his money on the bank to get the best out of it. Poor banks...such victims..

Do you believe steam wouldnt have aborted this "legendary leecher" winter sale if they would have been so hardly abused like you try to tell us?

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

People gaming the system took advantage of the stuff steam was giving away, so yes I would call them the victim to some extent. I don't live in EagleLand so my government doesn't specialize in fucking over as may people as it can get it's hands on, sorry to disappoint you. Either way I don't see where the gvn't and banks are being taken advantage of by anyone.

To the other bit about the "legendary leecher" sale, I have no idea what you are trying to say. Try not to let your anger get the better of your English skills.

Actually, whoever is complaining is forgetting about the great new F2P games that recently got released (Tribes Ascend, Super Monday Night Combat, TF2, etc.).

Besides, It's waaaaay too early to be sure what Steam is planning to do in the following 10 days of Summer Sales.

1 decade ago

TF2 wasn't recently released (as F2P, let alone released period) and Tribes Ascend has been around, and free, for a few months before it came to Steam.

Don't get lost in the details. The general picture of what I'm talking about is that there are plenty of Free to Play games.

Besides, I don't consider "a few months" to be old. TF2 is old, but has been F2P only last year.

Epic cop-out.

Sure, plenty of free-to-play games... that are free-to-play outside of Steam. Aside from TF2, valve doesn't really have a say in what is F2P or not.

Epic cop-out

I'm being serious. There's no point wasting time finding the incongruency of one word ("new"). That won't change my point one bit, also because I did take responsibility for what I said and will tell you again:

a few months, to me, is not old

Sure, plenty of free-to-play games... that are free-to-play outside of Steam. Aside from TF2, valve doesn't really have a say in what is F2P or not.

About your other (more valid) point. Yes, those games were free to play outside of Steam, but Steam adds the "social network" aspect to it: You can trade your in-game items for something else and chat with one another while playing different games (and other things for sure).

The fact that Steam included these F2P games in its library makes them available to all those users who want to play games without leaving Steam.

Are they F2P outside of steam (except for TF2)? Yes. Does that change my argument about not complaining about the lack of new gifted games to play because you already have a wide selection of F2P games at your disposal already? No.

Now, seriously, enough with this pointless debate. If you're riding the "disappointed about Summer Sales" bandwagon then, go ahead, I won't stop you. I find nothing to complain about, since... gasp... there were some great discounts on Day 1 already, and who knows what other goodies the following days will bring.

You could win stuff in last summer's event. It was mostly just DLC but hey, it was free.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

If you do something consistently enough, it becomes a pattern and people start expecting it.

The last several major Steam sales had big events alongside them in which you could win free stuff. It's not "entitlement" to be disappointed if that trend ends. I'm not entitled to free stuff from Steam, but that doesn't mean I'm not disappointed when it was formerly available and now isn't.

Also, a sale is a win-win for both sides. Yeah, Valve doesn't have to have sales, but i's not like their profits don't massively increase when they do.

1 decade ago
Permalink

It's not entitled to be disappointed. It is entitled to go around saying "why aren't they giving me free shit? this sale sucks! Stupid valve."

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Quite honestly, I haven't seen anyone carrying on like that. That doesn't mean they don't exist, I'm quite sure they do, but let's not paint an entire group of people with such a broad brush. They're an extreme minority. The majority of people complaining are just commenting that the generosity of previous sales seems to have been removed, at least from the first day.

Last summer sale had story posts, events, challenges, giveaways, and winning prizes. So did the Christmas sale. So when this sale turned out to just be a...sale, people are disappointed. When someone says "Steam seasonal sale," they're quite honestly just picturing more of an event.

I'm still excited to buy a lot of games I've been putting off for a low price, and bought some gifts for friends too, but I was quite looking forward to an event like the last few seasonal sales where we were challenged to actually play the games, not just buy them and get lost.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Not to mention that the extra achievements and stuff were actually fun... you're right, it felt more like an event than a sale.

...and getting said achievements made me buy a crapton more games, some of which I never played again, just to horde tickets and coal that in the end got me nothing. It was the fun that was the point for me. And hey, if I won a promotional contest (promotional because I just dumped my entire wallet into the Steam money pit to enter it as many times as I could, hence good for them) that was basically a 1/5M chance... cool.
