Here's a giveaway if you are not interested in reading.

Now I suppose it's common knowledge that people do not read giveaway descriptions. But what about threads? Surely the forum goers read the threads we create, right? If you feel like finding out, then read on!

Few weeks ago I created three threads that all had something in common, besides all of them having the word test in the topic. Every one of them had giveaways that I put in the comments in addition of having giveaways in the OP. The results I got from the first and third thread in particular were interesting.

The first thread only had one giveaway in the OP for This War of Mine (level 3, 380 url given in SGTools). The custom filter I made for that kept the url number at around that level, but I did use the same filter on every giveaway on all three threads so we can compare the numbers.
I wrote in the OP that "I'll probably add another giveaway", which I did in a comment 16 minutes later. I also edited the OP that people should scroll down a bit for that second giveaway. The giveaway itself was Renowned Explorers (level 4, 159 url). Okay, so a bit higher level and less than half wanted the link compared to the first giveaway.
On the comment where that second giveaway was, I wrote that maybe there will be a third one, which was added three hours and 12 minutes after the OP. The OP was again edited that there is a third giveaway if you scroll down a bit more. The third was The Elder Scrolls Online (level 0, 162 url). Well clearly the level didn't have much impact on the number of url given. It was about the same number of people who noticed both additional giveaways

For the third thread I decided to keep it really simple. No edits were done in the OP or in the comments, I just let everyone know exactly how it's going to happen right from the start. I had four giveaways in the OP and at the end I wrote that I will add one more giveaway later in a comment on this thread. Then luckily I made a mistake.
I meant to have five giveaways in the OP but I forgot one. I added it four minutes after the OP, in the second comment of the thread. I also said in the comment that I forgot to add this and this does not count as that extra giveaway which will be coming later. The proper extra giveaway was in a comment created 45 minutes after the OP.

Now for the stats from the third thread. The four giveaways in the OP were: Planetary Annihilation: TITANS (level 0, 194 url), WASTED (level 3, 123 url), Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes (level 3, 126 url) and Cibele (level 6, 34 url). The forgotten giveaway on the second comment was Steredenn (level 0, 58 url) and the extra giveaway was CLANNAD (level 5, 63 url).
Comparing those two level 0 giveaways does show an interesting difference. Even if people just weren't that interested in Steredenn compared to Planetary Annihilation, that's quite a drop in the url numbers considering that the Steredenn giveaway link was almost immediately below the OP. I'd say it's pretty clear that there are quite a lot of people here who won't or can't read the threads and just check the OP for giveaways before moving on.

Feel free to give your opinion regarding that conclusion. Anyways, just for reading this far, I'd like to reward you with ten more giveaways. I will keep posting comments on this thread with one giveaway in each. I will wait until there's at least two comments from you folks after each giveaway before adding a new one. Two comments is enough and any additional comments added before I have time to post the giveaway will not count towards the next one, so no need to spam right away. The custom rule from the giveaway up there will be on all of them.

Edit: Here's the link for the results of this thread.

It is an interesting experiment. I'm actually quite animated to read when someone post a long thread because usually it's something interesting that's being posted (albeit a few dull ones here and there); generally the person has something to say of value or they feel it so, and that - for me at least - is enough for me to concede one or two minutes of my "precious" time. Either way, i'm too tired to dwell too deeply in your findings presently, but I do hope the generous sg userbase can lend a hand in your inquiry. Cheers!

You folks can keep track on the entry numbers of the giveaways in this thread by looking at my SG profile. The giveaway in the OP is the level 1 giveaway with the highest number of entries.

Interesting read. Yeah, many people don't read or check comments, sadly. (sometimes they don't even read the OP and just check the links for gibs ._.) ^^; Bump!

Also, you can filter the comments and show only the ones with giveaways by searching using the search box with "/give", look

I did read the whole text though.

Something you also might want to consider is that people (at least me) I read the post and some comments and then not enter the discussion again unless I am actively discussing in it, even then i only check comments around mine. So you might want to put that into account too

TL;DR People can't be bothered to read the comments section, they just look for giveaways in the opening post...
I, however, am glad to have taken part in all your tests, and I'll do the same this time!

Because of my poor English, I realized not everything, but the point I caught. One important factor - time. Depending on the time of day it may be enough, or vice versa is not to be missed. An interesting test. I am waiting for results.

I am reading topics, sometimes comments, but rarely I am getting back to them if it is only for GAs [unless I know it will by my WL].
The exception is, if it is particular topic of my interest or I made comment and somebody replied [cpt. obvious] :) what is deadline for GAs?

As a psychologist, I really like your experiment :-) We are always after real behavior (and not just what people say they would behave like).

I am happy. I remember seeing so many of your giveaways I wanted to enter, but could not due to me being a low-level newbie. Now I can enter ( a lot of) your giveaways!:)

From my experience I can tell you that I tend to visit a thread and even if it is super intereating (like CrystalGamer event for example) I simply forget about checking it again. There are so many threads here that my brain just can't handle it :) Tje same applies to giveaways, I often bookmark invite only giveaways (which I am really interested in, good games from my wishlist) and I forget I've bookmarked them the very mext minute. Lots of people lurking forums fron their work too so they just don't have time to sit and look for new gibs in a thread :) And yes, sometimes I don't read OP's especially when they are long :P I'm trying to get back to them but I often forget about it too. And some threads seem not interesting - don't read them too, I'd rather focus on something that'll be fun for me or educational :)

My opinion: wall texts are long and sometimes people don't have time (going bed, on a rush, etc) to read them or, of couse, they just don't want.
For the comments, I blame both people and the fact that this forum i not very reading-friendly. It's difficult to keep track on a discussion you might enjoy because the design of the forum and the fact that in a lot of them half of the comments are "bump".

I missed your previous threads, but yeah, people see a huge paragraph and roll their eyes.
I myself have very little time as I browse these forums mostly while I am at work; I had to log in 6 times for short sessions just to read the whole OP here :P

P.S. I've written some fairly big posts too, always put a "click here if you don't want to read" link to the GA.
