He probably just doesn't know how to organize his Steam library and can't find his AAA games from the pile of indie games.

It's by far less timeconsuming to produce an indie game, ofc there will be more of those. Steam just makes money off any sale, so if people greenlight a game etc they will sell it because it gives them more money. Money makes money. Easy to understand.

Indie games are great! I mean, 90% of them are crap, then other 5% have potential, but they are not finished (like Penumbra: Overture), and what remains... well, there are pretty awesome nuggets like "To the moon", "Dear Esther", "DEFCON", "Trine"(if it's considered to be an indie, ofc). So yeah, without this greenlight stuff and crappy bundles flooding your inventory we would miss a lot of valuable titles. I think that the whole game industry shifts towards indie games, since AAA titles are made only in order to get maximum profit(Carl on Duty, Battlefield that took after CoD, Ass Creed). Valve itself went even further and they are now focused on making F2P games where they make hefty profits by selling community-made stuff. I mean, man... sounds like we need moar indie :D
