Personally I think this is utter BS. It is a 60$ game, there should be no option of spending additional money on it. (Good/worthwhile) DLCs are an exception.

The RPS article brings up an interesting (or disgusting) point, these transactions are generally put into games to avoid tedium. One reason why F2P models work well, the good ones anyway. What happens if the game is gimped on purpose to include tedious sections? I would not put that past EA.

I will maybe buy it when it is 5USD or less.

I will never spend real money on anything inside the game of course. Never have done that in my life since I don't play MMO's.
