i got star trek online running on a gpu below minimum spec, admittedly their were graphical well not issues but it was ugly but still it ran, i consider system requirements a rough guide, minimum cpu might be a bit lower if say GPU is decent and can take some of the load off

I got star trek online running on atom D410 with GMA 1350, that has nothing to do with this topic bro.

it was an example of minimum requirements and a game running on something that doesnt meet them "bro"

I'm just saying, it's nothing special. Most games will work on a way slower computers than the minimum requirements proposed by the publisher.

Comment has been collapsed.

That's all down to how the dev. chooses to implement hardware checks. Some games will simply not run, period, on PCs with CPU's with too little physical cores / threads.

Permalink

Almost no dev does that. Most games (note that I already said most games in my previous reply) will work, even if sluggish to borderline unplayable.

Wait I just realised how dumb that was to say.. Of course that's a hard limit - it's a minimal requirement of a GPU by a game engine.. And we were talking more about arbitrary lines drawn by devs :P

You could be able to run it. The difference is how well you will be able to. With a weaker card like GT 635M, you won't probably be able to push your settings to above low-medium. Perhaps with a little tweaking you can get a bit of headroom out of the game

This reminds me about how well Assassin's Creed 2 was optimized. I believe you could run it smoothly on quite weak machines. Better than AC 1 in some cases.

Does this game even support Hyperthreading? Most games do not. Besides i7's are quad core; hp does not make them octo core.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It could have some use if they recommend 8 core CPUs...

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Not if the game has not been programmed to use hyperthreading. It's not a passive technology after all.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I don't think HT needs special support from programs. If code is already writen to use more threads there can be some benefit from HT.

It's cpu level trick to utilize some under used resources by running more virtual cores at same time.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Not at all. All software has to be specifically programmed to utilize Intels proprietary technology.

Although an old article, it explains how HP works. Non hp programmed software can actually underperform on HP enabled CPU's. http://www.anandtech.com/show/868

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It is a passive technology. It makes programs believe the CPU has twice the cores (when in fact most of the hardware in each pair of these "virtual" cores is shared). The OS needs to know this info and differentiate between real cores and HT to make good use of it (a task that requires 2 cores, for example, should run on 2 completely different cores, not on the same pair of HT threads). If a program uses more threads than the CPU number of cores (which until now is rare in games) then HT kicks in.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Just because task manager shows twice the amount of cores the cpu actually has, does not mean HP works like extra cores. Read my link posted above. Unless HP has been drastically changed and has dedicated processing power to control it, I cannot see how it in any way could be passive.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

5-30% performance increase is still possible. And next-gen games are written to use more threads which HT does answer.

Can increase performance for any multi-threaded code. How much depends on what sort of instructions code uses. It only needs multi-threaded code and if they require multiple cores I believe they use multi-threading...

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It just depends on so many parameters. This link is updated to i7 HP and explains even more indepth. It seems HP can do some HP passively, but any software optimized properly will not benefit much. http://www.overclock.net/a/hyperthreading-explained

There really isn't much benefit to choosing a lowend i7 compared to a highend i5.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

What's that article supposed to point out? I think you're misinterpreting something there.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It doesn't work like extra cores, it just makes the OS believe there are extra cores (the're certain parts of each real core duplicated so a single core can execute 2 threads at the same time in certain cases (for example, if one thread is doing an FPU operation and the other an integer one)).

I'm a programmer myself and know what HT exactly is. HT is 100% controlled by the CPU/OS, it's not something an application can "use".

I can't tell if you're bragging, when I say 30+ I mean it doesn't hit lower, it easily went into 60's at times, but never went under 30 when everything around was exploding.

A convenient nearby rectum. It's just scaremongering IMO. People will have a little rant about it and then either get over it or simply not buy the game.

Ubisoft has been willing to lie when it came to the PC market before. Like their repeated claims to have PC releases match the console release dates, which has just as repeatedly been broken.

And speaking of release dates, the PS4 version of Watch Dogs allegedly is coming out the week before others (including PC).

I just love when publishers cut little pieces off a game, here and there, to sell as either pre-order bonuses or stuff into the various "special" versions they'll be selling.

And the best thing is how they're marketing these extra pieces of content... 15 additional minutes of gameplay! WOO-FUCKING-HOO!
