I am a complete amateur fisher.
I need a few tips.

Fishing pole or is it rod? How long should it be depending on my height? Or is this irrelevant?? I assume not every kind is suitable for an amateur, any suggestions on what to use?
Would you suggest any other equipment I should use?
Fishing. Any tips on how to make the most out of it and possibly to not come back home empty handed. Here I mean handling your equipment, how to position yourself and everything like that.
Almost forgot the most important part. The bait. I know all these plastic, artificial or whatever materials are popular, but i would like to learn using live bait. Can you please give me tips and buying suggestions on this (or is it just better to catch bait to use as bait?)?

Thanks in advance!

(Serious questions only. I'm almost positive there are no undisclosed giveaways like yesterday. I think.)

Not even 1 fisherman around here?!

OP EDIT: Should have made this one hour earlier, at the same time as yesterday. Although since yesterday was so easy and it took so long for someone to answer right stuff, I doubt an extra hour would help someone give me a correct answer. Well, there is still time.

With amateur I meant I know nothing. If that site is for beginners...:O...then I am in diperse in fishing deparments because that site is way above my league.

OP EDIT: I mean its not that hard. You just have to look through the mumbo jumbo and it should be quite obvious what to say.

Aha, aha, I get you. Nice thinking, I didn't think of this. Hmm, where would one find one?
POST EDIT: Especially from what I heard in the news, that there was a riot yesterday, people stomping worms around the world. Crazy, I wonder what was behind it.

OP EDIT: Fishy hereW, fishy thereI, fishy everywhereN. Hmm, maybe Luigi would need a similar game to MariosK, just a little bit different.

Take some of your stomped ones, they should still be tasty enough, or stomp some more.

It would be helpful to know where you plan to fish (no need for google-map location but something like "small river in belgium" would do it) and what species you would like to catch.

The length of the rod is mostly your personal taste but for some ways of fishing a shorter or longer rod makes it easier but a bamboo stick works as well ( yeah I´ve done that^^...) and so would just a line ;) So don´t worry too much about the right equipment. I´ll try to help you to figure it out anyway if you can provide the information I´ve asked for ^^...

It's a river (quite wide, but not that fast) and there is also a deep lake nearby. Unfortunatelly I don't know what type of fish are those swimming in. I can only say they taste good. The biggest I've seen in the river are long as an average keyboard and a half. The longest in the lake at least an adult mans arm length. I hope its enough :)
Bamboo, you mean for trying to impale them directly? I'd try that.

Hrhr lol I was talking about using a bamboo stick as a rod xD...
Assuming your profile info is right it´s in slovenia, then I envy you for some awesome fly-fyshing waters^^...
Without knowing which species you´re having there exactly my best guess is to try some maggots or worms like suggested before. You can dig for some worms (compost piles are a gold mine for that ;) ) and maggots you´ll probably get in every fishing store or maybe a pet shop (they might have them as reptile food :?). Get some basic attractant mix by mixing some breadcrumbs with vanilla sugar and add water until it´s sticky enough to form a ball that fits in your hand. Throw two or three of them in where you want to fish and just wait^^.
For rod+reel avoid the 10 bucks package of a supermarket but get something cheap form a fishing store. It won´t neccessarily cost much more but will do a lot better of a job for you. Take a line with about 0.28mm diameter, that should be enough for the size of fish you´re talking about. Grab some swimmer (+ stopper to fixate the depht), swivels, lead ( to make the swimmer stand) and "allround" or "wormhooks" size 6,8 and 10 + some gripper to get the fish rid of the hook afterwards and you should be good to catch at least something ;). Oh and having a net to land fish wouldn´t hurt neither ^^...

But the most important thing is: Inform yourself whether you are allowed to fish there and which kind of documents you might need to do so. It isn´t the worst thing to take the time to learn and pass the exam for a fishing licence (if you got something like that in your country). You might have to kill a creature and that should happen as "easy" as possible. A hit with a hard stick or something like that on the head to stun the fish and then stab the heart (among the pectoral fins) with a sharp knife.

I hope this can help you.

Not an expert, but here you go.

River fishing you have a few options. You can use a fly rod, which are typically much longer and require a more advanced setup (still pretty easy though) than just straight line casting. But it is a ton of fun once you get the hang of it. If you are looking to fly fish, I'd highly recommend finding a day-guide and just taking a half-day or full-day class. It's not too expensive and they'll have a lot of different stuff you can try out so you can see what you like.

Otherwise line casting works well enough. I prefer a bubble and fly, along with an open reel. An open reel casts easy (just open the bale - the metal loop at the top - throw it, and close the bale to start reeling in) and is a bit easier to work with and harder to mess up. You use the bubble as weight (fill with as much or as little water as you want - more water means it sinks, less mean it floats higher) and then attach a fly at the end.

Rigging it up is pretty much the same no matter what you do. You will have your line that come out of your reel (normal line (about ~5 lb test) in an open or closed rod, or floating line if you are using a fly rod). Then what ever weights you are using tied to the end. You can be like me and use a bubble, or lead weights or whatever else. After that, you want 2 - 5 feet of "leader" line, which is just additional line that separates your normal line and weights from the "bait". Us a swivel to connect the two. (A swivel looks like a tiny double-sided carabiner.)

For the leader, the length depends on what bait you are using and how/where you are fishing. There's no magic formula, but I generally go about two arms lengths and just call it good. For rivers and tight spaces you may want to go a bit shorter, but it really doesn't matter too much.

Then use whatever bait you want. I like flies, which are pretty cheap, but take more active fishing (you have to cast, then reel it in, then cast again, etc). Bait is fine too and that tends to be more "cast and wait," which can be boring. Other things work well but may be restricted in certain states/areas. If you have concerns, ask anyone at your local sporting goods store, but if they sell it, its almost certainly just fine to use (and restrictions are usually well marked anyways, but sometimes include large hooks, lures, some types of bait, etc. Flies are almost always allowed, unless fishing is just entirely restricted).

Anyways, hope that helps.

not sure if fresh or salt water, but this is for salty...

pole! also length isn't much of an issue... it'll probably be just about as tall as you, maybe a few in+. as for reels, get one that's simple, like the ones with the bar you flip up to cast and put back down to reel in. make sure you set the tension (knob usually on top of reel) kinda low but not too low, so if you get a bite it just doesn't break the line. I usually like line that's between 10-25 lb test.

don't get caught up with the stupid plastic lure gimmicks! all your kit needs is a bobber for grassy areas, a weight for sandy areas, and hooks galore! personally I bend off the barb, but that makes it harder to catch. what you want to do is find an area that's just off the shore that's grassy with a big sandy spot. that line between the two is where a lot of the fish like to hang out and eat.

bait-wise... if you can cast a net to get some "pin fish" or the little tiny guys, then that's the way to go! (ps, make sure to throw back any babies of the sport fish) also, live shrimp are great too! you can usually get them for cheap at a bait store. another GREAT one is squid! I can find them about half price at an asian market!!!! and squid is much easier to work with than shrimp! it's my bait of choice! only drawback is that you end up smelling a bit squiddy by the end of the day....

well, that's all I got! good luck to ya!

A fishing "pole" is a long bamboo pole that you tie the string on the end of it, for pond fishing really close to the bank. A rod is man made and usually a graphite carbon, of which you can attach a reel to.

Since you are realatively new to fishing the first things you need to learn are how to tie knots to not lose your hook. The next would be how to cast properly. And finally how to deal with the fishing line when it gets tangled. All of these things you will need to watch videos or find someone to teach you.

As for gear you can use any graphite rod and reel combo. I recommend "open bail" for river fishing so you have more control. I say that you should ignore using plastic baits until you are familiar with the use of the rod and reel comfortably. Instead just use a hook with a worm on it (or any insects really), as well as a "bobber" a few inches away from the hook so you can put your bait at eye level with the fish.

River fishing requires much more patience because the fish dont see you bait quite as often because the river flows so strongly. On your question about live bait. YES you can catch it, anything that is alive or smells like meat the fish will go crazy for.

deumas, Yaz, saltybill and Marldain, thank you very much for all the information. Well writen for me to understand all the new things. All copied to wordpad so i don't lose it.
Fishies here I come (Worst case scenario, fish eats me and when I come out, everyone calls me Pinochio.)!!
If anyone has also any tips on catching Mermaids (not to eat of course, but to take on a date) please...

About the khm, khm, secret, khm, hkm, undisclosed, khm, khm, giveaway, khm, khm. As much as all 4 of you would deserve to receive something, noone said what the winner would need to say (I'm pretty sure noone even guessed there is a giveaway here. At least that was the case yesterday, even though yesterday we've had a winner.). So the best I can offer is to buy you a drink at minimum if you visit my pretty country. I'd offer you a fish lunch, but who knows if I have any potential in that area.

.

OP EDIT: If one would want to know one of the acceptable answers for the giveaway, one would need to bookmark this page, because an answer or two might be added a second before the thread will close.

You´re welcome and I noticed the "hints" about a giveaway but didn´t find what you want me to do...Might just be the topic of fishing distracting me from other things^^...Oh and this might be a warning for you as well: You probably won´t be able to stop after your first catch ;)

That is because I never told you what I want you to do, or anyone else for that matter. Yeap, same thing as yesterday :) You needed luck or be a genious :P
(all the hints for the giveaway were actually writen here later, because I realised I opened it too late, for the time that I had)
Not to worry, I'm sure I'll think of some other disscusion that will not contain a giveaway.

Like yesterday in the thread "Stomping contest" (you can find it if you use forum search), there was no url's. The first guy that said the right thing won a game by his choice (well, he will get it next month). And as you can read in that thread, he just said something and was blown away there was even a giveaway there and even more that he lucked out on guessing it :D LOL ROFL
But I do admit, yesterday was easy. First guy could have won, or at least the guy who said ...1000... (unlucky bastard :( ).

About your request...I guess I could, but I wont, at least not just like that.
But I'll give you a hint or two.
-What needed to be said can be found in the original post. It is of course not bolded and pointed at with a flashin neon arrow sign, but shouldn't be that hard to spot.
-If hint #1 is not good enough bait to catch what you seek, I found out, that if you read my yesterday's thread it helps you find this thread's answer, which was not intended at all.

So the promised answer or two before I close the topic.

-First of all I was bored as hell. FUBARed to insanity. (reading this when you read the end could prove useful or not)
-Fishing is not something I have in plans in the forseable future, although it was quite interesting in reading those 4 elaborate answers. I did save those answers on my computer so if I ever need a quick kickstart I have it.
I have no idea how I thought about he topic. I just did. (Probably related to Stopming Contest topic and Wormy of course.)
-The OP does tell you what I am looking for or want to know of great importance! Read again and look for important. So now that you know what is the main point of this, perhaps you want to have another go at guessing (Stopming Contest topic could be of assistance perhaps.). If not, read on right ahead...

.

.

-Stomping contest topic started because I was, well pissed, because I was wasting so much time looking for Wormy's cards (look for a topic by Wormy, something like Steamgifts Trading Cards. Just write cards in the search.) and not claiming any. That one was easy, I said first to stomp 100 worms wins (I just did not mention they would win an actual game). I mean, hey, its a trolling forum, so things like that should make sense. Write I stomped 100 worms and you win. So, 1 guy was close, he said I stomped a thousand. 100 was before 1000, but I was not asking for a genocide (sort of). Then later on one guy said the magic words.

-So before you die from this babling, Wormy was again the antagonist of this thread and this UndisclosedGiveawayThatDoesNotExistUnlessYouWinIt. Now, last chance for you to guess the answer and feel good (sorry, no game for this now). Combine what is important and our antagonist... (Damn, one time I went with school to watch the play Antigona, and the girl playing her was so hot, almost wearing nothing. I head the best seat in the theater as I was only one positioned in a way I was able to see all her assets when she was lying on the floor. The top assets.) ...sorry for that, and you should be able to say something similar to what I wanted...

.

.

-So, the easiest answer to my question would be "Just use Wormy for the bait." or "Forget about those, nothing beats Wormy as bait. You'll even catch Moby Dick with him." or anything similar where you would use Wormy. Few guys did mention Wormy, but no luck this time around.

-So, if you see another weird thread by me, I doubt there will be anything hidden there, because I just don't do that. I'd have to be really bored for childish things like that. And even if I am bored, it just might be trolling in support of all the trolls on the forum (which is everyone almost...does that then mean there are no trolls if everyone is a troll...hmm, good topic this disscusion would make).
