I'm a huge fan of Metroidvania games, it's one of my favorite genres. I'll list only the ones I've played on Steam
METROIDVANIA GAMES

I've played a ton of them on Steam so I'll just list some of the ones I've played and I think are good and enjoyable.

I love Metroidvanias. My absolute favourite one was Dust: An Elysian Tail.
The latest one I had been playing was Hollow Knight. I sorta stopped because I got into playing something else at the time. When I do go back to playing it, I'll probably just start over. lol.
I seen a few people mention Guacamelee. I have the Super Turbo one I got as a freebie, but it's windows only. Have to keep an eye out for the Gold version since it's playable on mac. =)

My favorite is Magicians & Looters and perhaps, more recently Touhou Luna Nights.

I've enjoyed A Robot Named Fight a fair bit, worth a look during a sale

I am not particularly knowledgeable about the genre. Only played a few of those titles and two stick out, as they were the most recent. I must admit, I've gained a recently found fondness of the genre.
As far as my experiences go, I really enjoyed Axiom Verge. It was free on Epic and I had my old PC back then, low performance games were the preferred ones. I decided to try it out. Best choice I made that month! The scifi-ish atmosphere is phenomenal, the music is fire, the gameplay is very enjoyable. I would recommend it if You have not played it already!
The other metroidvania I played is my first ever steamgifts prize, Chasm. Its a nice looking, pleasant experience. Not as "unique" per se as Axiom Verge, but good nontheless. Played it on hard, which gave a decent challenge.
Hollow Knight and Iconoclasts are on my backlog. Both seem to be right up in my alley, but I did not have the mood to play them so far. xD I will eventualy get to them.
I am also planning to buy Timespinners sometime. Yes, beside my backlog, I am looking forward for new titles as well. I am my biggest enemy. xD
Overall, there is a certain charm of the genre: exploring mysterious places and events, the satisfaction of unlocking formerly closed routes, often having lovely retro-esque graphics... there is a lot to love about metroidvanias. Its easy to get hooked upon them. :)

If my definition of metroidvania is correct, I would have to go with Psychonauts and Brutal Legands, than again I am really not sure.

Sundered is my small contribution/suggestion.
I'm not a fan of the genre even though I like how it has many titles that are visually stunning, but the backtracking etc isn't for me...yet I found myself enjoying this particular title because the generic mobs all contributed points to the immense skill tree, the navigation is well mapped, the skills themselves and the fights were engaging and the graphics and animation are superb.

So many persons don't really know about Valdis Story: Abyssal City and how good it is. Very challenging and polished.

I call these Platventures, because I don't like the term, Metroidvania. For one, it's a clunky fusion; Metrovania would've been better, but at least we've stopped calling them Castleroid. That one always made me think of the gargoyle from Conker's Bad Fur Day; ever sit on a piece of Gothic architecture for- nevermind. My other bone of contention is that Metroid didn't start the subgenre, and Castlevania didn't innovate any of its staples. If you think about the very first Metroid, all of the mobility power-ups can be found within 5-10 minutes of your starting point, and then you have potentially hours of exploration; that's not much of a power-up-based progression. Metroid 2 was almost completely linear, as was Fusion, same with Zero Mission, and while the Prime subseries follows this pretty well, they're technically ineligible, because this subgenre refers to 2D sidescrolling games. The only Metroid game that really qualifies is Super Metroid. As for Castlevania, Symphony of the Night gets credit for bringing weapons/armor/shields/etc., a magic meter and spell library, healing rooms, fast travel, elementals, and none of that is new to those of us who've played Super Adventure Island 2 on the SNES, which actually had 2 different fast travel features. I'm sure that if I thought about it, I could come up with an earlier one that has a leveling feature, too.
Anyway, I think I love this subgenre, but I need to spend more time with it. Yes, I've been playing these since the NES - Blaster Master was probably my first - but until recently, there were very few of these, and most of them were extremely high quality. We've seen an incredible surge in popularity for these lately, and it wasn't until recently that I'd played some bad ones. The ones that come to mind that weren't very good were Sundered and Apotheon, if you're wondering, As for the good ones, I have quite a few, but I'm going to limit it to my favorites.
I have a few more that may or may not count, because they have an overworld that does not blend seemlessly to the rest of the game. If that doesn't make them ineligible, these definitely count, because while the areas are broken into individual stages, what upgrades you've uncovered will most definitely determine where you can and cannot go. Think Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia.

Would anyone consider the Darksiders franchise a platformer? Just picked up 3 today and and it feels like one, sort of like the first two do.

So I've been playing a lot of these again these days and I was wondering what SG thinks of these and what your favorites are.
Obligatory GA for you all.
