Hey! Not really experienced in PCs but i travel a lot and sometimes me & my girlfriend would like to take our gaming on the go, so we decided to buy a laptop, problem is, we want a pretty good one for under $1000.

I came across this one

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/lenovo-15-6-laptop-amd-fx-series-8gb-memory-1tb-hard-drive-black/4577800.p?id=1219774252427&skuId=4577800

and as far as I know this seems pretty good, but is it "Run GTA 5 and Fallout 4" good? I'd really love some help on the matter!!! Thank you, sincerely a guy living who just wants to play AAA games on the road :p

It depends if you want to play Minecraft GTA and fallout. If you aren't too worried about graphical ability then a laptop will be fine but I'd still recommend getting a bit more powerful one than that

so based on the specs you think i can run those games but with obviously lower settings? graphics really arent a big deal to me

it'd be risky. Laptops are weaker than pc's by far and i'd be surprised if this one could handle new AAA games even at 30 fps on the lowest graphics. With a gaming laptop you usually spend closer to $1500 if you want to play stuff besides psychonauts

1 example
https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/notebooks/cosmosIV-15/
with options
i5 quad core 2.3
8Gb RAM
950M
750Gb WD 7200rpm

laptops are twice as expensive as desktops if you want high-performance. That's the price of mobility, but sometimes mobility is what one needs.

I'm pretty sure the 950M wrecks any integrated
well, my 650M wrecks the HD4000 by far, as in really far

well, I'm in a situation where desktop was not an option, so I got a laptop with a good cpu, HD4000 and a Gt650m. The HD4000 is respectable, and the newer iterations are as well, however on the largest gpu-heavy modern titles, you might handle medium settings for a year or two and then lowest is all it can handle.
My underclocked Gt650m is able to play Fallout 4 at 30-40 fps, with 20fps in the heaviest areas, at 1280x720, on my own heavily-tweaked lower than low settings, with performance mods installed. I'd say it does a good job and does it better than I had expected. This gpu is almost 4 years old. So I'd guess the 950m should be alright.

I'd advise you google/youtube around for some performance benchmarks though just to be sure of what it can and what it cannot do.
If I had to buy a gaming laptop at this point, without money constraints, I might go for a 960m 15inch ~1400€ laptop. For a step lower, at 1000 I might go for the 950m.

I personally don't have really much experience with laptops but I'd say that in case of gaming the 950M would really be worth the investment over an integrated.

Lenovo laptops suffered from a preinstalled adware/malware called "superfish", you might want to reconsider your choice of buying a Lenovo or just buy it, wipe it and do a clean OS install to get rid of the usual bloatware.

It's better to just delete all unwanted pre-installed programs and run malwarebytes, in the case of superfish there was an easy tutorial to follow to get rid of it entirely. Lenovo stopped dealing with superfish for about a year though.

Doing a clean OS install is bad, you don't want to remove the recovery partition and Lenovo has some pretty useful software in there like the energy manager and the settings manager.

Some of them do. The consumer grade versions do, though their Business line class of laptops (Thinkpads) and very clean, I bought one a few months ago and had 0 adware nor bloatware; it's sad that they try to trick the average consumer.

laptops are getting a lot better each year but at the moment you'll really need a gaming laptop if you want to play newer AAA titles you could always play GTA III =D

Well, to be fair, I'm running GTA V on a ~$800-$900 ASUS laptop from 2013. It's on lowest settings but still with native resolution and 30+fps.

Also, good laptop hardware has gotten a lot closer to desktop hardware lately. But yeah, they're still expensive ^^

damn my $1500 ASUS can't run Sans is like 2 FPS unplayable but i guess was a couple of years before 2013. So I guess there is hope of finding laptop today which can run GTA V for you =D

really? it says min is Intel Core i5-2300 2.8 GHz which is more powerful than both of those laptop examples but don't think the only thing they want to play other games out there can use CPU more than GPU

I bought the Lenovo Y50 last year for CAD 1000$. It has the i7-4710HQ, GTX 860m and 8gb ram. I can run GTA V just fine on medium-low graphics.

There's the slightly updated version for USD 859$+tax right now:
link
My guess is it can run Fallout 4 but I don't own that game so I don't know.

Laptops are just bad for gaming though, I bought this because it has a 45 watts quad-core processor which is very powerful and it allows me to run a virtual machine on my laptop for school since I study in network management. Pretty much all non-gaming laptops have dual core 15 watt processors which are terrible.

I don't know how well the AMD one you linked will perform but my Intel/nVidia one does run GTA V on medium settings (GTA V dosen't have the low options) at around 60 fps, actually I haven't checked the FPS but I had Vsync on so....

Still my 700$ desktop runs the game slightly better than my 1000$ laptop.
I can't wait till I'm out of school to buy myself a 2000$ desktop though :O

haha unfortunately for me, my job requires me to travel a lot, so ill have some pretty good down time, me & my girlfriend aren't much readers as we are gamers so we thought investing in a laptop would be cool to make 7-10hr trips pass faster. I'd love to add shit to my desktop but in this moment gaming on the go seems like the more viable option.

Keep in mind that gaming laptops require you to have a wall socket though. Running high end games like GTAV will drain your battery in about 1 hour.

i have my desktop connected to my hotel room right now, lol

i can always just plug it into the bus, train, cars we take. getting cooling pads with fans as suggested by another user as well.

Permalink

I don't use a cooling pad, but it's not a bad idea since the fans are under the laptop you always need a hard surface to lay it on. Otherwise you might block the air intake.

For this price, you won't get much better... though Lenovo does have some build issues I don't care for.

For reference, I have an HP Envy with a GTX 860M and I got 12236 on Skydiver 1.0 (3dmark). The video chip inside the laptop you linked is not much better than the GTX 860M.

To compare, I got well over 20k on my main computer with a GTX 960.

If you don't want to play the latest and greatest, that Lenovo will be just fine, but if you seriously want to play the latest top tier games like Fallout and GTAV on a laptop, you're going to have to nearly double your budget. There's just no way around it.

My recomendation would be if you invest in a laptop it may be expensive but spend 200 more and go to the mid range gaming laptops otherwise you will be disapointed in the games you can actually play and enjoy i think this laptop will have frame issues even at low or mid setting with new games and lastly if you can dont buy lenovo its the worst out there from the cheap companies out there i would pick acer but in general try find an intel it wont be hard at christmas with so many offers

I suggest you really really really carefully search for a laptop with good cooling. It may have the greatest hardware, but if it throttles because of temperatures, the hardware is worth nothing. Also, I suggest that you buy a cooling-pad with active fans. =)

thanks man, i actually didn't think of that. im gonna invest on a pretty neat coolingpad with fans

rule number 23 of laptops: Do not rely on coolpads. They can be comfortable and give a small boost, but it won't change a much in practice. If you get one, then I'd say go for the best airflow. I got a cooler master notepal i300, cheap (30€), simple and great airflow. No fancy design nor fancy does this does that.
Secondary effect of coolers is that they throw more dust into the laptop. Make sure you figure how to clean your laptop. Mine is easy to open up and clean the dust from the exhaust :).
