Source.
Owner doesn't have enough money to keep it running and doesn't want the stress of running a site. Existing files will be archived and continue to be available (how this will be implemented is not yet known, afaik all links are broken atm).
A rundown of the troubles the site has run into is available here.
Paste - p.pomf.se seems to be down.
Mail service - mail.pomf.se currently still exists.
IRC(irc.pomf.se ,default channel was #cute) currently still works.
Not sure about the tracker(tracker.pomf.se/announce with udp:// as prefix might work,http:// is currently disabled).

The source code for the website is available here. The sister site uguu.se for temporary file hosting is functional. Currently functional clones are img.loveisover.me and maxfile.ro.

Going to piggyback here since everyone is asking for explanations. I don't know the site super well but it was mainly for hosting .mp4 content in WebM form and probably anime related.

You are probably familiar with Imgur and Gfycat's versions of gifv formats, this was the next step allowing you to upload things WITH sound, which the former do not allow at this time. Basically kind of like a link only youtube without having to worry as much about copyright claims.

About half-right. Pomf.se was a website mostly known for its complete "no bullshit" altitude - the only technical limit to the site was that you couldn't upload files over 50MB and (shouldn't,wasn't strictly enforced) upload viruses/child porn. Anything else goes - pictures, executables, videos, whatever you wanted. The site was popular with the anime community due to its clean, simple design (0 ads and hotlinking IS allowed - which means you could paste 5 links in your browser and would download 5 files instantly with no "click here" or "preparing your download" as well as that images could display in-line when links are posted inside sites.) for sharing .gifs, but also used by other people mainly for high-quality content (e.g. 4k videos) because it offered loseless video/image sharing(unlike, say, imgur which compresses images as you upload them or gfycat which converts everything to its own format) that does not expire(imgur deletes non-viewed images after 3 months iirc).

It's more likely that you've seen it at least once than you think it is; The site's monthly traffic is measured in hundreds of TBs; And the owner had a stance of not deleting anything unless it was going to cause him direct problems irl - the total number of files that were deleted is a single digit. Over the last year, any "conversational" video you've seen that lasted was probably hosted there(out of my mind,a notable example includes Dota 2's zyori sniffing video, which he did try to take down.)

As far as I know it's harmless (unless you count loli as cp but that's a whole other can of worms)

Pomf.se was a media-hosting site (I don't really know what else it was used for, but it was used a lot by NSFW Tumblr sites to host their images and videos) that housed a lot of NSFW videos and gifs.

It might of been used for other stuff but I don't think so.

I always though gfycat was better :P

Gfycat limits you to 15 seconds and no audio, which is absolutely fine for some stuff but not always what you want. If you want longer content, audio, or something untouched by another encoding step, a service like Pomf is much better suited. Gfycat has the edge in being optimized for short, GIF-like content with handy playback controls and a wide variety of encodings that automatically select based on what's best playable by whatever's viewing it, be it various web browsers, phones, whatever, even falling back on GIF if necessary.

Here's an example of something I had hosted on Pomf, and here's an example of something I have hosted on gfycat; that should demonstrate the different use cases nicely.

I have a friend that uses pomf to share stuff. It seems helpful and I'm sad that it's going down. Also really sad about people not even knowing what it's about or thinking it's shady.
