Well I do. I won't tell you what kind, but it should be fairly obvious. I took a look at my collection, and decided that I'd infuse some of you rubes with my good taste. Below are 5 clues based on authors or books who I have a special fondness for. Solve the clues and you win entry to a private giveaway.

If this is your first puzzle, the clues should be entered into a URL like so: http://www.steamgifts.com/giveaway/xxxxx with the x's representing the clues in order

What game is this for you ask? HA, as if I'd tell you something like that so easily. You must solve YET ANOTHER puzzle if you wish to know the name of the game. I have scrambled the letters of the title of the game.
Rearrange them properly to discover what game this puzzle is for: Wount and Mlade: Barband
Ha, you'll never get it.
[Hint it's just the first letters that have been switched]

Giveaway ends in 1 week. Don't discuss answers, don't post the questions on yahoo answers or anything stupid like that, etc... etc...

Oh and one last thing... Disclaimer: I bought this game from Amazon, and their support assured me that it will activate on Steam, but I have no other way of verifying this.

Anyways, on with the clues:

  1. My favorite author, who once wrote a book whose title is based on a Friedrich Schiller quote, is more famous for his writings in a specific subset of the genre-theme of this giveaway. In his books, he has few female characters, but THIS one is rather famous for being an expert in the subject the author is famous for. [Character's last name, first letter, uppercase]

  2. A digital samurai? How awesome is that? Our protagonist is a top-of-the-line hacker, who pairs up with THIS girl to stop an evil plot involving ancient Sumerian lore and a raven tied to a nuclear bomb. [Character's nickname, first letter, lowercase]

  3. The story of a Fireman who thinks. Television destroys society, suicide is commonplace, and the Salamander cauterizes the wound. [Title, xxxxxxxxxx xOx, exactly as it appears in the title]

  4. Our first contact ended in tragedy. They came to us, and destroyed us. They were more organized and better equipped than we were. And yet, this time, defeating them is child's play. The despised third-born is the key to victory, and he secures it with help from a little doctor. [Main character's last name, first letter, lowercase]

  5. An author famous for his obsessive commitment to accurate science in his books, he once wrote an apology to readers for a minor error. Aside from his most easily recognizable series, he has co-authored many works, including one about a human settlement being created on a foreign world, which they named after the Hall of the Hart. Not much fauna there, except for the abundant salmon. Wait, salmon? On another planet? that can't be right... [Author's last name, first letter, uppercase]<note: the first author listed for this book is the one I want. As far as I can tell, he's always listed first>

Pretty sure that should be enough to get you to the giveaway using Google and a good imagination, but let me know if any of them are particularly hard to get. I "may" include hints, based on the number of entries.
P.S. you get bonus points for actually reading the books listed.
P.P.S. bonus points do absolutely nothing

Clarified what I meant in 1. I hope that makes it clearer. I've decided I won't be adding more clues, but if something is a little hard to understand, I'm more than willing to make it clearer.

Bump because we're now at >48 Hours remaining. 17 Entries so far. Everything here is googleable(assuming you do it right) and requires no previous knowledge. But obviously it's easier if you've already read the books and can recognize plot points :-P

Yeah, can you provide hints for 4 and 5 please :3 I read the rest, and since I am a great fan of science fiction I am disturbed not to know all of these books... 3 was really easy however, the first 2 sentences were enough for me.

Well I'm glad you edited it out, but please be more careful.
If you're a fan of Sci-Fi I guarantee you've at least heard of #4, and I'd be surprised if you hadn't, and in either case it is possible to use google to get it, I've tested that one personally using just the text from the hint. #5 is pretty obscure, but I left enough clues in there that you can follow the breadcrumbs to find it. Not going to give out any direct hints, however.

Could you please reveal the titles of the books when the contest is over? I've still not had any luck finding the 4-th and 5-th books.

Well I suppose I should reveal the answers to my cunning test of intellect and love of literature.
Giveaway is Here

  1. [C]alvin > The book mentioned was "The Gods Themselves" (Isaac Asimov) based on the Schiller quote "Against stupidity, the gods themselves contend in vain" (you can get this by going to Schiller's wikipedia entry, and then googling each of his quotes. When you google the full schiller quote, the novel by Asimov comes up as well), and reference to his various Robot stories and the famous female roboticist Susan Calvin. Asimov was the father of the three laws of robotics, was the first person recorded to use the word "robotics" in print. Susan Calvin appeared in multiple books by Asimov as a leading roboticist. She is the only female roboticist known by name as far as I am aware.

  2. [y].T > Snow Crash (Neal Stephenson), featuring Hiro Protagonist's sidekick Y.T. - The various keywords I included should have made this a pretty easy one to google if you hadn't read it.

  3. Fahrenheit 4[5]1 (Ray Bradbury) - I believe this is one of the easier questions. Aside from the obvious, the salamander is the symbol for the firemen.

  4. [w]iggen > Ender's Game (Orson Scott Card), featuring Ender Wiggin - Looking back on it, I'm sure if you've read the book it's obvious. If you haven't googling "little doctor" should bring up a wikipedia article referring to Ender's Game. Or googling "despised third born" will return a bunch of weird, unrelated stuff. However, googling "despised third born, science fiction" will return one of the top results referring to Ender's game.

  5. [N]iven > The Legacy of Heorot (Larry Niven, Jerry Pournelle, Steven Barnes) - His more famous work was Ringworld which is also the book where he apologized for the error. The trick here was googling "Hall of the Hart". That would lead you to Beowulf, which has the castle named Heorot, meaning "Hall of the Hart". Then you can google "science fiction, heorot" and the second result is The Legacy of Heorot. The salmon clue was for people who had already read it. One of my favorite parts of that book was that they found salmon colored fish on the planet and decided to name them samlon (with the l and m reversed). So salmon "can't be right" as I said :-P

Gosh. I suck. The only one I could only figure out 2 and 3. 2 since my friend recommended reading it and 3 because I read that ages ago. lol Gratz to the winners.

That was pretty fun, though. I hope to try more of these. Thanks for that giveaway, though. :P
