A friendly advice to all of you using a computer running on Windows OS:
A ransomware known as "WannaCry" has been spreading across 150 countries, infecting over 230,000 computers.

WannaCry (or WannaCrypt, WanaCrypt0r 2.0, Wanna Decryptor or similar) is a ransomware program targeting Microsoft Windows. On Friday, 12 May 2017, a large cyber-attack using it was launched, infecting over 230,000 computers in 150 countries, demanding ransom payments in bitcoin in 28 languages. The attack has been described by Europol as unprecedented in scale. The attack affected Telefรณnica, FedEx, Deutsche Bahn, and the UK's National Health Service (NHS), among other corporate and governmental entities.

WannaCry is believed to use the EternalBlue exploit, which was developed by the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) to attack computers running Microsoft Windows operating systems. Although a patch to remove the underlying vulnerability had been issued on 14 March 2017, users who delayed in applying security updates, or use unsupported versions of Windows, were left vulnerable. Microsoft has taken the unusual step of releasing updates for the unsupported Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 and patches for Windows 8 operating systems.

Shortly after the May 12 attack, several lines of code were found by an anti-malware researcher to function as a kill switch, and was activated by the researcher. This temporarily stopped the spreading of the virus. The code was initially reported in the media as a built-in kill switch; however, some analysts concluded that it was a programming mistake.

Basically:

If you never update Windows, it is highly recommended to do so in order to avoid the ransomware affecting and compromising your system.

A few years ago when I was doing PC repair for a living I did come across a few people that still used Windows 3.1. Basically ended up telling them to buy a new PC, but some of them really didn't want to.

if you use PC for any kind of entertainment - like social media / gaming / movies / music you may find it bizzare, but if PC is used only for work it can be in some cases understandable. Years (5 or 6) ago when I was doing PC repairs I've encountered people still using DOS. But they would not upgrade nor change their machines - why? Because these were small local businesses, when years or even decades ago they bought PCs it was an investment, they bought machines, bought custom software for their business for big money and now while PC upgrade itself may not copst a lot having someone make soft for you is. They are still depending on these old machines and DOS programs to run their warehouses and such for example.

But in order to affect a pc, the victim needs to open a zip file or click a link or something like that, right?

It's possible for this sort of thing to slip by in things like malicious ads on web pages. It's called a "drive-by download".

WannaCry multiplies not with downloads but is possibly able to compromise every windows-pc with an internet-connection as far as I've understood...

So, you don't need to click anything at all? I just need to visit an infected site, even if it's a legit site?

Not too sure, but apparently not. It exploits some kind of bug in Windows systems, which was patched now - hence why updating is recommended.
