One of the changes in this announcement is that cross-region gifting now appears to be allowed regardless of the price difference, whereas previously you could only gift to regions priced up to about 15% higher. The catch is that Steam will now try to match the price difference, so gifting to a pricier region will cost you more than before.

Gifting to an email instead of an account is a thing now too, but I don't know what the implications of that will be on this site.

I don't think so

Probabbly not, otherwise it might incentivize making/owning accounts for lower currency regions and gift themselfs games from their real account/currency. Might be why the announcement is also worded the way it is.

Ha ha no.

The gifter pays the more expensive of the two regional prices.

If the gifter sees the item at $30 and the giftee sees it at $40, the gifter pays $40.
If the gifter sees the item at $40 and the giftee sees it at $30, the gifter pays $40.

It fucking sucks and I got downvoted to hell on reddit for pointing this out. I asked a friend in the US to try to send me a game that's absurdly overpriced here and it tried to charge him the local price.

Sorry you recived such thing, me and my best friend took a look ourselfs and found that. People downvoted probabbly because is something they don't want to believe or maybe they fear Valve might backtrack their desicion on this.

Lets remember Valve introduced regional pricing and locking because of a loophole bots and traders were exploiting, so I can see why they wont allow it to work the other way around.

Region locks essentially exist because how many people abused cheaper region's prices in the 2010s, an icecube has more chances in hell than Valve reversing a change that was financially problematic for it. We had more than a decade to accept this fact, it worked like since then - expensive can gift to cheaper, but still pays the expensive price.

I'm mostly angry because the 10% price leeway allowed me to get some items from friends in the US because some companies price their items absurdly high here for no reason. Valve ain't doing shit to fix it, and I ain't paying their extortion prices.

I dont see how this would stop your friends from getting you some items, they could either, gift you the game/dlc or a gift card. Gift cards ain't changing and the price would still be the same on their end anyway. This change is mostly to allow us in México (for example) to send a gift to other countrys like any european one; when before, the only way to acomplish that was by overpaying throught gift cards as there was no way to pay the exact amount for them to adquire the games themselfs.

My point is that we shouldn't be charged more money for being in Mexico, and neither should our friends in other countries.

And if WE were to gift a game to a foreign friend, in the best case scenario we'd have to pay their prices, and in the worst one, our extortionately high prices.

Companies like EA just despise us. And then they complain that we pirate their games. Well WHO'S FAULT IS IT. Not ours.

I do get and respect your point, we are not being charged more money for videogames for being in Mexico, we are charged more money for videogames for being in Mexico if we try to send them to USA or EU or anything above from this update. But its the exact same price if we send to a country like Chile for example. Your original statement was your friends in USA sending you things; and that hasn't changed at all for you or them from this update.

Before if you wanted to gift them a game, you would had to overpay throught gift cards for them to get the game themselfs anyway. Your local game price hasn't changed from this update, its over priced due the publisher's choice for the regional pricing way before this.

The issue with EA is what "regional pricing" they choosed, and we know how greedy EA is, so ofcourse to make the most money, they opted for a raw price conversion from dollars to mexican pesos, rather than a regional pricing for us based on income. Is not steam's fault, is the publisher's.

If you give a lot of gifts for the purposes of this site or otherwise, in general this is probably a bad change as you'll often be paying 10-15% more on those gifts it looks like.

In a giveaway you could just be more strict and disable countries that are ~5% more expensive than your local Steam Store price, but that would be quite the shame as the difference between say EUR & USD is almost always more than 5% apart. Previously you could gift a game to a country where it was 14.9% more expensive and it would go through just fine at your local price, the hard cutoff was 15%. Now there is essentially no cutoff so you will be paying more every single time you gift to a more expensive country.

The email thing is interesting, but it's only limited to the same country as the purchaser and refunds automatically in 30 days so it seems it doesn't really mean anything in regards to a larger change when it comes to Steam gifting.

Also the "Direct from wishlist" thing where "You no longer need to be friends on Steam to send gifts" is a good change. Hopefully it doesn't raise any unnecessary "account issues" from Steam Support if you give a lot of games to non-friend recipients.

The price seems to remain the same if you're gifting to a country that's within 15% more expensive. From my testing so far. Only change when it's more than 15%

Oh, this is good news for me -- I will finally NOT feel embarrassed participating on Secret Santas and the like.

Another side effect: now I can use my Steam wallet to buy cross-region gifts (it was not possible to do so with digital gift cards).

Cheers!

Ah, this is the same as the dynamic pricing used at amazon, and the current attempts of some grocery stores to also use survelliance pricing.

What they all are "discrimination" pricing. FAR more so for digital goods, its the same goods that cost the same to make: ZERO, its infinitely copied.

As a Latin American, I can assure you that this measure isn't about taking advantage of consumers by overcharging them; it's about preventing the exploitation of absurdly regional prices in some cases.

Before, I know that thousands of users created accounts in Turkey and Argentina to send each other gifts or buy games with price differences that, in many cases, exceeded 90%. You could literally get trading cards to buy games.

I don't agree with having to pay more to send games to other countries. In my case, sending games from Mexico to Mexican friends in the United States makes a huge difference. I think they should allow price differences of 10-20%, but at least I'm glad to be able to send games and not just credit.

So why doesn't Valve just ban every single one of these accounts instead of fucking the rest of us over?

It would probably help if they enforced regional pricing fairly, instead we have to deal with EA and Microsoft's bullshit regional pricing. Why do these execs think we have money here?

Apparently only people in more expensive area are Swissers, where I have no friends, so can't test it out as I am not sure if my app already reflects that change. I guess I will rather still use gifting better games through steam gifting system in groups where I trust people to not cause me problems. I already got one strike for not delivering game due to regions, cause I had no option how to get it except sending wallet credit which I refused to do for stranger for full price.

Please note that any gift email not accepted within 30 days will be automatically refunded, so they cannot be scheduled for future delivery. The recipient of the gift must also live in the same country as the purchaser.

Umm???

It seems that if you purchase a game after adding someone as a Steam friend, their price will be displayed.
Also, it seems you don't need to be Steam friends to send a game from their wishlist.

And don't worry if your nephew's email address is the same one they use for their Steam account. The email will include a link to let them sign in to their account and accept the gift.

So, you can't gift games into regions, where they are not available? Wouldn't that make things harder here? Since you'll have to check availability of the game and then set up region locks accordingly?

That will remove one anxiety for people, who could not send a gift because game was 1% "too cheap" in their region.
They may still not want to pay more than they "budgeted in", but that will need to be solved with region locks.

Are all the Steam sale prices global? Are any regional?

Use SteamDB website to check. You can also install Augmented Steam and go to a game's page for a direct link to the SteamDB page.

Mostly the % off is the same for every country, but the base price won't necessarily be the same in the first place. In some cases a game is not available in the store in a country (mostly China & Russia), and in very rare cases a game won't be on sale in a country (Japan sometimes).

According to these changes you should still be able to gift to any country that is less than 15% more expensive than your local Steam Store without paying more (once it is more than 15% more expensive, you will be paying their price now, apparently).

I miss the good old days when you could just buy a game, put it in the inventory as a gift and send it to whoever you wanted a year later.

It was easy, user friendly and fair.
