You should definitely go with Opposing Force next, it's a great expansion with many new things added. After that you could try Blue Shift, its nothing ground breaking but a nice add-on to the main game. As for Black Mesa i would recommend downloading the free mod version: it's the recreation of the original half-life with the source engine, they added many details to the levels but there won't be any new areas. Also while i think its great as a mod, for me it lacks that half-life feel the original had. (Oh and don't forget downloading the "On a rail uncut and the "surface tension uncut" maps for it as the original lacks a good chunk of the two levels).

I mean half-live ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
But seriously, welcome to the massive club. This is one of the best franchises ever. Period.
I recommend playing Opposing Force next and then Blue Shift after that. Then move on to Half-Life 2, Episode 1 and Episode 2.

And then wait for Half-Life 3 to never come out like the rest of us.

I'm a slow player (I have to visit every location before moving on to the next area), so hopefully by the time I'm done with Blue Shift, Opposing force, HL2, Ep1, Ep2, and Portal 2, HL3 will be out. Hopefully.
And yeah, I understand now why HL3 is so wanted :D

Blue shift is meh, 4 hours of gameplay, nothing speacial for me.
Opposing force is good, it takes 14h to finish, has new guns etc. Go for it.

+1 -- There were two demos. Uplink (completely separate scenario from the released game), and Day One (about 1/5th of the first portion of the released game). Uplink was definitely fun and worth paying.
Also +1 to all the OpFor and then Blue Shift suggestions. If memory serves, OpFor was Gearbox Software's (Borderlands franchise) big break. And then HL2 and episodes, or play some HL1 mods and Team Fortress Classic.

dude, half life 1 was genius... what ever you do, dont play hl2... its not even near being genius as hl1, and by some weird paradox, its praised like hell. :)

Black Mesa is Half Life 1 remastered, but it doesn't have Zen yet (the alien place). I'd say play Half Life 2 next, I didn't really enjoy trying out OF or BS.

Black Mesa is free, there is just a premium version as well.

Lost Coast is only a test game. It's not an actual game in the series.

I'm also playing through the original Half Life for the first time. It's been fantastic so far, I have gotten lost in a few parts though and it unfortunately got put on the back burner after Isaac Rebirth came out.

And what a great game! The old graphics didn't bug me at all, and the story was nice too.
I wanted to ask y'all, what's the next game in the series I should play? Blue Shift? Opposing force? Lost Cost? HL3?
And where does this fan made remaster, Black Mesa come in? Is it like, the same thing as HL1, with better graphics? I saw some screenshots on the Steam page and I don't think I've seen all those areas. Are there extra levels/story in Black Mesa? Also, what about the older Black Mesa mod? Worth downloading?
Thanks in advance, here's a Valve Complete Pack for your trouble.
