CATASTROPHIC is the word being used.

I'll say it again, CATASTROPHIC.

It just sends shivers down your spine doesn't it?

Off topic: Has anyone seen the 2010 Australian movie "Tomorrow, When the War Begun" yet? I enjoyed the movie alot, especially since it was similar to the American classic "Red Dawn."

On topic: How uncommon are fires of that magnitude?

I read the first book and own the last book of the series. Don't know about the movie, but the books are alright, even if the characters were fairly nasal and irritating. I get that they're kids, but it's borderline idiotic at times.

Well, end of the world for the Americans anyone else who writes their dates as March, 14th 2015.

Anyone who writes their dates sensibly i.e. 14th of March 2015 will be fine :P
(Just a subtle dig at American date system, I have nothing against Americans in general)

Its true, our date system is terrible.

Also 7/1/2013 > 1/7/2013.

You are the first American who has agreed with me that the date system you use is daft.

My teachers use to yell at me for writing it wrong, I was stubborn and told them that they were the ones that were wrong for using terrible logic. I just don't get how it goes month/day/year, hell even year/month/day would make more sense but day/month/year makes the most sense. They got even more annoyed when I explained that lmao.

Fun times.

I never understood that either to be honest, but then again, I never understood why I got swatted for writing with my left hand either.

Well, along with my stated desire to, "Watch the world burn," in this same thread, perhaps they were right. Damn, I may be the anti-crite - someone that has hate for humanity and wishes to see it die, but believes we could be redeemed by a single great act of self-eradication...er, wait, WTH was I talking about? I need games...

Hadn't considered that really as we (in the UK) measure in feet & inches (usually heights for clothing purposes), measure distance and speed in miles / miles per hour but then we measure stuff for 'technical' purposes, buildings, 'official' things like record distances etc. in the metric system.

It's a bit messed up using both systems but at least I can explain the basis of it... 1 inch is the length from the knuckle of your thumb to the end, 1 foot is literally the length of a human foot, 1 yard is the length from tip of middle finger with arm outstretched to the tip of your nose (quite easy to measure large bits of cloth like this in the past). Other odd units like Chains (22 yds, also the distance between cricket stumps) and furlongs / fathoms etc I can't remember the details about their pasts. But given the American population is white European settlers (originally) I can see why they ended up with the Imperial system.

And don't even ask what people were thinking with the old Imperial coinage system; pounds, shillings, pence, crowns and half-pennies. Not sure where crowns fit in at all xD

Chains are from land surveying, I'm pretty sure. They used to use actual chains to measure distance, in lengths of 33 feet or 66 feet (22 yards).

A furlong is an eighth of a mile, and I've only ever known it to be used in horse racing.

A fathom is 6 feet and I've only known it to be used for measuring water depth.

I knew that the fathom was for depth measurement, but didn't know where chain nor furlong came from, thanks.

I guessed that chain was literally named after a 'standard measuring chain'

Wait, I thought the original American population was the native Americans...?

1 decade ago
Permalink

Yea but the white settler's pretty much decimated their population and way of life (and that's why I guess they American's have the Imperial system)...
