Last time when I played Arkham Asylum was 2 weeks ago and the game had no steam achievements.Today when I checked Arkham Asylum's page I saw that they added steam achievements. Were those achievements there and I hadn't noticed or they added them recently?

EDIT: Ok,thank you guys for answering.I'll leave this thread open for a while for anyone who hadn't noticed yet.

No it hasn't, these are new. Until recently it only had the achievements in Games for Windows Live. Like I said, I beat it not all that long ago, and the Steam achievements were not available at that time.

I had never noticed them before. What's more interesting is that none have been achieved by anyone yet. They're all at 0% still. Must be new.

I should have a high % of those achivevements, but have 0... I dont know if re-open the game, is enought to mark all my achievements...

It doesn't, I just tried myself. I'm not certain if they are working, as doing actions which would get them after already having them in Games for Windows Live just wasn't working. Caught a batarang, nothing popped up.

Great game, sure, but still frustrating since I did it not all that long ago. I should be working on my backlog instead.

It still has Games for Windows Live. And as posted above, I'm not sure the Steam achievements are actually working, since I'm not having one trigger when it should. It could be they only trigger when they do in Games for Windows Live, and that is the reason I'm not getting the Steam achievement notifications.

Arkhan city has both GFLW and Steam Achievements. They pop up at the same time. So I guess this one will be the same.

As an achievement hunter, I can guarantee you there were never Steam achievements for Arkam Asylum, only Arkham city. These are new and may not be working yet as they may still be converting the game to use them.

Yeah, not working yet for me, I can confirm that.

Achievements sometimes show on Steam before they are available. Rochard DLC achievements were showing over a week before it was released. Flatout 3 halloween achievemnts were on time but addon wasnt available until December :).

Only to the GOTY, base game still doesn't have achievements.

I know there were Windows Live/Xbox achievements, but never steam achievements.

I doubt they would go back and add them at this point unless there's going to be some kind of bundled remake.

Edit: Oh geez they DID add them!

I wonder if it will take my 100% save and unlock em all...

Loading a save didn't work for me. Looks like you get to re earn them once they are working.

Errr...that doesn't make any sense. They aren't working yet, so how can you draw such a conclusion?

Because that never works anyway. I know if you do what is needed for a Steam achievement while offline, it doesn't count, and won't just show up later either. You need to earn it while the game is tracking that stuff. I see these being the same, even though we may have done what is required, Steam won't detect that it has been done and we will need to repeat those actions.

Well, never say never, because that's simply not true.
The game has to implement it of course, but you can earn achievements while offline (I don't have any example because I never play offline, but I know some games do it), and you can also earn achievements if you completed the necessary actions before they were implemented (example: Trine 2).

Well, I can only go by my own experiences. Its nice to know that apparently it can happen, but having never seen it myself, I'll just remain negative. My mood can only improve from here at least, I won't get all depressed like others. :P

Just to explain things a bit more in depth, Steam isn't really tracking anything in itself, everything must be implemented within the game.
An achievement will pop up when the game makes the right call to the Steamworks API, so that means the developers must have implemented a routine when the game starts to check if the necessary condition(s) was/were achieved (in offline mode or before they added the achievements) and make the call(s) to the API to unlock the achievement(s).
However, if the developers didn't bother to do that and only make the call to the API when the necessary condition(s) is/are reached (and "forget" about it/them immediately after), then you will have to do everything from the beginning once again.

Besides the games mentioned by TsunTsun, also Borderlands achievements were retroactive.

Not all of them. I had a save game which unlocked three achievements, but still left several others untouched.

Transffering a Test Drive Unlimited 2 from non-Steam to Steam version unlocks some but not others. Gemini Wars, which after a patch had its achievements broken, will not update one earned while broken, unless you are able to earn a new one.
Until its out, there is no way to say one way or the other if any will be automatically unlocked.

I just got word that it is in beta testing. Achievements need to be up for testing purposes. Normally you wouldn't see achievements for unreleased games but since this is a conversion, not a new release, you see Steam achevements. So for now, it is still only GFWL achievements.

If you're talking about the predator challanges, I'd suggest checking out youtube videos about them. However if you're talking about combat challanges I can give you one tip: Don't spam the attack button! It took me a long time to realize if you press the attack button just after your previous move ends your combo is gonna increase by 2 instead of 1. So it becomes much easier to reach higher combos and you won't lose your combo so often. Also try learning your character's special moves and using them. For example there's a special combo takedown which immediately takes out one enemy, great for armored guys. Lastly don't forget to DODGEEEEEEEEE!
