I know that Brothers - A Tale of Two Sons isn't really a co-op title, but I played it as such with my 7 year old daughter. We both enjoyed it quite a bit, and even though it was a little darker towards the end that wasn't a problem for her.

I'd love to find more games that are:

  • Co-op.
  • Aren't combat oriented. (Brothers does have the players kill, but it's very rare and story specific, and the game doesn't involve repeatedly killing enemies.)
  • Have some story, i.e., aren't just puzzle games. Preferably a story that small kids could relate to.
  • Are easy. It pains my kids to see characters die repeatedly, even if I'm the one doing the playing. That's why we stopped playing Never Alone.

Probably not many games like this. Any thoughts?

Feel free to also mention single player games which fit the criteria (except 'co-op' :).

How much combat is there in Trine?

It's not like it's action packed but there is some combat here and there. Most of the game is platforming but you have to kill some occasional skeletons from time to time.

Put Trine (1) on easy, and you can button smash through Trine's occasional skeletons.
It's also a very beautiful game, gorgeous level design, light hearted story, easy puzzle with multiple solutions.
Trine 1 only has local co-op if I remember correctly, and involves some config to play with 2 keyboards/mouses (I remember having to edit a config file manually... But there might be easier ways that I didn't know of back then...
Trine 2's co-op design is much better I think. Some puzzles benefit from co-op play more, Slightly harder fights but still fun and not too hard I think. And the levels are even more beautiful than 1st Trine.

Thanks. Sounds promising. I have both Trine and Trine 2 in my library, and only played a bit of 1, so maybe it's time I tried it again. I have two wireless Xbox controllers, so I think I'm set.

I find it difficult to play the wizard with controllers, mainly getting the pointer to draw boxes quickly is difficult, especially during combat. They have aim aids for playing the thief with controller, although obviously it's still less precise when it comes to shooting and grappling.
For those reasons, I think the best set-up would involve at least 1 set of keyboard & mouse. But of course 2 controllers still work if it's more convenient for you.
I really enjoyed the two Trine games, hope you 2 have fun too :)

Trine 1 has online co-op as well.

Oh nice! I think the version I played with my friend wasn't on steam. It wasn't even the enchanted edition. Probably why we had no access to online co-op at the time....

Most action games are combat oriented so I'd recommend point & click adventures (easy ones). They are not co-op games but you can play them that way.

The OP found Never Alone hard, even though ibb & obb is a really nice game, I suspect it might be exceeding the level of challenge that they might be looking for. I personally enjoyed ibb & obb though, great co-op game.

I would suggest the LEGO games, but there is combat in there, so it would probably not really suit you.

My five year old is addicted to LEGO Marvel Super Heroes, and I have others, but I was wondering if there's something more like Brothers.

Personally, I don't know of any. Most great games have combat in it, unfortunatly.

There aren't many indeed as they aren't "profitable" to make, atleast on PC. I mean usually games you describe require many mechanics compared to usual run of the mill killing enemies. It's rather sad really.
Interested to see if there are some gems though that have passed the view.

Shadow Puppeteer could be a game for you.

Well, the characters not dying part takes out most game suggestions. But I would second Shadow Puppeteer. Most of the time it is fairly easy, has easy puzzle and only some boss fights. Although the boss fights are pretty hard in comparison to the rest of the game especially the last one. Also has at least one chase sequence which might be troublesome. Other than that one of the easier local-coop games.

The Undergarden and Rayman Legends, though The Undergarden has an annoying thing where if you're not the first player you'll "die" and be warped to where the first player is if you fall behind and don't stay on the same screen.

Are easy. It pains my kids to see characters die repeatedly, even if I'm the one doing the playing. That's why we stopped playing Never Alone.

Rayman could be perfect for another kid, but it's not a game for her daughter, I suppose :p

I recently played The Cave, it's a funny, lighthearted game with a message which you can play co-op. There is some killing but it's done in a very cartoonish/childfriendly way. There's a demo, so you can try it out and see if it's something for you. Beyond: Two Souls (PS3 exclussive) might also interest you if you have a PS3, though it's a bit darker/more serious. It's also a co-op game.

Edit: Telltale's Sam & Max might be something that interests you (not co-op, also has a demo), The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition and Monkey Island™ 2 Special Edition: LeChuck’s Revenge™ (also not co-op, some dying but not a lot). These are adventure games with a strong sense of humor that might appeal to your kid more.

I second The Cave, it does not have a great story like brothers, but there are puzzles and its a fun platformer. Also, there are (I think 7?) different characters, and for each character there is an own complete level. Since you take for one playthrough 3 characters witch you, you need at least 3 runs to see play every level in the game:)

To Monkey Island games: I finished them recently, and they are really great! But the puzzles can be a pain in the a... Some of them are incredibly hard, that could be really frustrating for kids:/

Never played sam & max, but hear good stuff:)

I quite enjoyed "Mini Ninjas". Though there's a fair amount of combat, you aren't actually killing things - when you defeat the skeleton minions, they revert to their pre-enchantment forms as woodland animals. The combat might be a bit difficult, but I think that buttonmashing is enough to do pretty well on easy mode, though it is single player, and you might want to help them on boss fights.

I also wholeheartedly agree with the Trine suggestions.

Rayman Legends and Rayman Origins...

Rayman Origins my 4, 7, and 9 year old boys played all the way thru and they would be so excited if we got Legends.

You could have a look at Chariot (http://store.steampowered.com/app/319450/).
It is co-op with a few enemies and the story is not too deep but your daughter might like the idea of running around as a princess with her fiance and it's good to play with a controller.

It´s not coop, but a nice and not too dark Jump and run game: Max: The Curse of Brotherhood

I remember it beeing not to hard gameplay wise.

Edit: maybe some choose your own adventure? Moster loves you it´s mostly very kid friendly, but they should be able to read and maybe you should play it with them ( but i guess you´ll do that anyway) .
