To be honest, someone who has no giveaways, or just enough to get a higher level, then put them on a idler when they win, that's a leech. They have no interest in playing the games, only in getting the cards. :(

If they're actually entering giveaways with the intention of playing their wins at some point. Not a leech.

There are lots of them around. Not sure why they would be offended by the word, since that IS what they are doing. lol.

I was a member of one old Croatian gaming forum and they had an interesting way of censorship. Words like piracy, drugs cd crack and such would come out as different (often silly) words when submitting a post. So with that said, we could change the word leech/leecher to something like a cookie or a flower. And whenever someone writes my username (xarabas), it could come out as "cute" upon submitting a post. And it's not so far from reality when you really think about it.

Great idea with a funny outcome, it would be even funnier when these words would change on a frequent basis, so no one is really able to exploit or make use of these substitutions.

I personally don't care, kinda actions speak louder than words kinda guy myself. I usually think really hard before posting/saying something to someone. Also I give away games, 'cause I buy way too much bundles and don't have enough friends that care for/play games, so can't really be mad at people that just win, without giving... after all I'm happy I got rid of the keys, they are happy they won.. hopefully.

P.S.
I know we are talking about the word, not the people, just my general point of view :)

I suggest to ban people with positive ratios. If they give more than they take, they pressure a person (or people) of the community to take more than they give (turning them leeches), because that's how math works.

Like how some people in online games with high K/D ratio look down upon those with low K/D ratio, ignoring the fact those are the people who enable their high K/D in the first place?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

For those that hate leecher! Please be grateful!

Imagine about ur ratio. If no one leech, everyone would have the same equal gifting and receiving. If you were to say that u would want your gifts to receive 0 entry as most people would be feared of being banned/ classified as leecher due to high ratio. Others that find that the game is not fun, would not even join the giveaway. Thus, the community will be even more selective of the games they join which is good but they would ignore most of the indie games which may be fun to play. Gifting is a sense of pleasure and if the creator feel constaint for gifting to others that are leeches, you can create ur own whitelist or set up giveaway with your choice of rules.

Leecher can be a strong word but well others can replace it with another :P

+1 agree with you

I don't care if people call me leecher or whatever they want because of my ratio, even if they put me on the black list. People are free to judge and life is too short just to think about what others think about me, at least if I win a game/giveaway, I give my gratitude to them. Sorry if my English is bad, this is not my native language.

Tzaar well explained his view of a leecher, imo.

few time ago, a thread, a daily thread, with a giveaway, was at bottom page, in Discussions lists. like 12 hours, and not a single comment, bump, something.
the giveaway, thou, had 70-100 entries or so.
a few days after, same thing.

i've frankly thought that "leecher" was not offensive enough for a big bunch of those entries. so, ratio, sometimes, means zero, nothing!

edit: days*

My view of "leeching?" It's actually quite simple.

Everyone is leeching something on SG (games are just the most obvious currency used), so the term has no place here (particularly so, given the very nature of this site), and is only used by one to assert his/her perceived superiority over others.

I usually only give bump or gif for thread because I'm not sure to give my opinion about the thread. I leave no bump if the giveaway above my level or only for white list (sometime I find people who blacklist me and i only smile about it, i didn't blacklist people because there is no good about it)

I agree with Tzaar "Everyone is leeching something on SG".
edit: my last word didn't a view about tzaar but about other people
People have different reason to come here but at least don't forget to give a gratitude if win something or get a key from thread.

(kinda disclaimer about me and Tzaar: we both know each other enough , about these things, about the fact that he doesn't like the word. and he may also have felt the fact that this thread was written thinking about him :P)

what he says is mathematically (?) exact and is, like, what happens if you download by torrent: you're a leecher. my view is well explained in Wikipedia words:

In computing and specifically Internet, a leech is one who benefits, usually deliberately, from others' information or effort but does not offer anything in return, or makes only token offerings in an attempt to avoid being called a leech.

now, might be that Tzaar is a very very "leecher" as per giveaways entered and such, but i know, i'm 100%, 400% sure he's not a leecher, at all. he once shared a personal story, really giving it away, here around. that was one of the most ginormous giveaway ever created on SG.

yes, i love my tz

now, might be that Tzaar is a very very "leecher"

I agree, I am, but not for the reason you've given. I get more than "free games" from Steamgifts (though realistically speaking, it's more trading games than giving/receiving). I have made some friends, I get gaming news, I get bundle threads, I get white-listed (sometimes), I get rid of games I don't have a use for (and occasionally some nicer games), I get "popularity" (or notoriety, as the case may be), and many, many other things. (Edit: Oh, I forgot two of the "most important" (sarcasm) things on SG -- I also get CV and level, to enter more restricted giveaways).

Now, back to the word "leech." This site was designed for people to create and/or enter giveaways (the operative phrase being "and/or"). There's nothing here that says one has to create giveaways to enter some. There's a level 0 for a reason, and because of that, the term "leech" makes absolutely zero sense to me.

If you want to go even deeper into things, there are some high level users who have won many thousands of dollars more than they've given. Shouldn't they fall into the same category as someone who's won $100 but hasn't created any giveaways themselves? And then what about people who have won thousands of games, but don't ever play anything? Would you want your game to go to them or to a level 0 who's won 500 games but played every single one?

I could go on, but you get my point and I hate walls of text.

(Yet another edit) I also don't believe everyone who enters a giveaway in a thread needs to bump the thread. That they've even bothered to open the thread means there's a chance they've also read the material within (which is the point of the thread, isn't it?). As long as the thread is gaining the desired visibility, constant bumping is just spam, particularly with so many threads with giveaways in them. If the point of asking people to bump is to get others to read the thread, a handful of bumps over the course of the day is more than sufficient.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

forget the thing about you and re-read this one

so that if one of those entries was "a level 0 who's won 500 games but played every single one" he still would be a leecher (at least)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Perhaps no one felt the material in the thread was worth others seeing. I have no way of knowing.

Speaking on a personal level (which is really all I can do at this point) -- if a giveaway asks me to bump a thread, I always check to see where the thread is in the forums; if it's down the page, I'll bump, but if it's being spammed with bumps already, I won't bother because it's getting all the visibility it possibly can and my bump just becomes spam.

As for the rest, you and I will simply have to agree to disagree about the use of that word.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

agree to disagree

lol and agreed

(also, don't want to say much but -and as we're speaking on a personal level publicly-, after i've noticed those kinda sad threads up here, i've asked Mully to remove pretty much all the giveaways links, and took me two days to delete them all... = real reason of this thread)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Just to be sure I am understanding this correctly --

You made giveaways to support a thread, and because no one bumped the thread when asked, you're removing all the giveaway links? That seems counterproductive, but they're your giveaways to do with as you please.

Something to keep in mind (going back to what I said about giveaway deletions in another thread) -- asking and expecting are two different things. While I believe we have the right to ask, I don't believe we have the right to expect anything simply because we ask. The moment we expect anything in life, we're setting ourselves up for disappointment.

And yes, I understand you're frustrated. All I can suggest is that you let it go and don't let it get to you. The only person you can change is you. Lead by example, and hope others follow.

  • Then I lord it over them for the rest of their lives and remind them all the time that I brought cookies and how many I brought.
  • I'll walk by their cars in the lot and write the word "leech" in dust on their windshields.
  • I'll tape notes over the toilet tissue dispenser to remind them that they're leeching toilet tissue and that my toilet tissue ratio is better than theirs.
  • And if they happen to fall asleep around me, I will write "cookie leech" on their forehead with a Sharpie.
  • Then I give homeless people cookies so they follow me around praising me as the "Cookie God."

I wouldn't necessarily ban them but I wouldn't think very highly of them either. Leecher doesn't make sense: leeching is done by/with a single leech or multiple leeches.
Regardless, words shouldn't be taboo; it is the context in which they are used and the intent that should be judged. If they are breaking community rules on acceptable conduct, report them. If they are not breaking rules but also not behaving in a way you think is appropriate, deal with it how you see fit. I would either tell them that I don't appreciate what they are doing or simply ignore them. Other people seem to have different coping mechanisms both here on SteamGifts and in the real world - they might blacklist them or punch them in the face, but neither of those is my style.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Censoring doesn't work. If someone's offended then they'll also be offended by the inevitable new word that'll mean the same thing as "leech". People will keep using the words they want. Like when the "n-word/whatever other racial slur" turned into "coloured people" which in turn turned into "people of colour" which is literally the same thing with words just switching places. People took offense to the first word, the second one became quite comically ridiculous and now the third one seems to be used even by those that claim to fight racism.

Point is that you won't get rid of definitions, so when the word associated with it gets banned, it'll just evolve to have a new word to associate with. If you have a problem with the word being used against you, ask yourself why it is. Then ask yourself if that reason's enough to take away people's right to say that word.
Someone might be offended if you use the word "fat". When they think about the word, odds are they have bad associations for that word. It's likely they themselves are overweight, so that word has a negative connotation to it. Not because it's an inherently bad word but instead because they feel hurt because they know there's something wrong. They know it's not good to be fat.

If it truly is something that would benefit everyone, then change their minds. Use logic and common sense and you'll get the rational ones behind you. Over time the irrational ones will follow suit because they're not actually very smart and they'll follow the trend.

"Leech" is a word that induces cringe in me. People call others "leeches" on this site, unaware that for the most part, everyone's a leech here because in the end you never paid for the games you won and never really wanted the games you gave away. There was no real sacrifice here and if there was, you'd be quite a silly bugger because you're sacrificing your life quality to make a stupid giveaway. Everyone's a leech. It's just that those people think that because the CV they've given is higher than others or higher than they've won, that they're suddenly some generous saints. There are a few people who use the term ironically. Though, there are also some who use that irony, unaware that they've turned into the thing they're mocking. I won't go against people using the term because I have no horse in this race and ultimately care little about the specific word. I will however keep cringing when looking at those clueless people who are so unaware of their own existence that they actually call people leeches. It's cringeworthy at best and bloody sad at worst.
