I think there's two sides to the story, I hardly doubt the memes are the reason, no matter how funny it sounds.

True, I hardly doubt I would be able to enter the states myself based on how they interrogate people. I nearly pissed myself at how strict the border police in the UK was when I was just visiting friends, so no way I'd handle the manhandling of people high on power.

Tbh, even if it's not true, I think people from outside of the USA should not visit it unless it's fully necessary. I know personally people who went there as tourists or for a short friend visit and got in trouble with the police for simply existing and not being from the USA (yes, I'm talking about times after Trump became president again).

I have a colleague whose mother lives in the US (she is married to an American but she is Australian) and he just pays for her plane ticket for her to visit now. He's gay, dark-skinned and has an accent. Add the French passport to all that and it's a recipe for disaster.
