i currently own both. Both are great, either wait for a sale on whichever or aquire the game that your friends also have access too. In both cases, the game is funner with someone you know then solo.
edit* if you get gw2, join Anvil rock, we need more on the server for better WvsW

Well... the games aren't even of similar genres. Do you like shooters, or tab-target based MMOs more? Do you have friends that play either game? You can probably sink more time into GW2 if you're an MMO player, and I say that as someone with 350 odd hours in BL2.

I'd go with Guild Wars 2.
Borderlands 2 has two problems: A) it's nearly identical to the first Borderlands, with the main differences being the character classes available and a somewhat better story; and B) it's still releasing DLCs, so if you don't wait for the GOTY edition you'll just have to buy those as they come out, and that adds cost.
Guild Wars 2 has a story that varies between above average and abysmal depending on who you talk to (there's this sort of massive, circular hatecrushfest on the official forums and Reddit regarding one of the central NPCs in the storyline). Its combat system is not like other MMOs, and can take a while to learn. Everyone complaining of nothing to do when you hit max level clearly hasn't attempted to fill out their achievements list, or even get map completion; you shouldn't run out of things to do until you've exceeded 3-400 hours in the game. Furthermore, GW2 is in the midst of a string of free content additions which Arenanet claims will be roughly equivalent to a full expansion once they're all released.
If you do pick GW2, I'd recommend starting the game out with a Warrior or Guardian, they're the most forgiving classes to new players.

If it is only between those too:
If you have friends to play Borderlands with, get that. Because with randoms you most of the time have to fear with ninja looters.
Or else get Guild Wars 2. Very good game. Played it for some weeks non stop. But it can get boring fast. But not so fast as BL2 :)

As the topic says, I am about to buy one of those games. I am only a student, so my budget isn't as great as I would like it to be, and I can afford only one of them. What would you recommend?
