I have Windows 7 x64 | Had no issues for 3 years | My XBOX Wireless Controller is original

This works:

  • Anything that supports DirectInput.
  • This includes the Windows 7 Test Device window.

This somewhat works:

  • Brutal Legend, Psychonauts, and Big Picture Mode, all of them have some kind of bug. When I press the button [B], is actually [A], when I press button [X], is actually [B], and so forth. Right analog stick doesn't work. Guide button doesn't work but it does to show me the battery status. In Big Picture mode, I can only map one trigger (either Left Trigger or Right Trigger, but not both).

This doesn't work:

I'm suspecting this is related to some kind of XInput joypad detection.

What I already did:

  • Reinstalling drivers both with Windows Update and standalone executable.
  • Reinstalling June 2010 DirectX drivers.
  • Reinstalling Steam.
  • Tested several USB ports.
  • I disabled ALL deviced in the control panel of my PC, and still got the same issue =( I thought this would be it, but no...
  • I also tried the xsys.dll from my Windows 7 on the laptop, it was different in size (probably because it's the 32 bits version), but then again, didn't work.

Update 1: Joypad works fine on my crappy laptop. Big Picture Mode had no issues, so it's my current Windows install.

Update 2: This is so annoying, if you give me a good tip that leads to fixing this issue, I'll give you 3 bundle games of a list of 10, I think.

Update 3: Solved. It could be one of a couple things:

  • I uncompressed the x64 drivers with WinRAR, then manually reinstalled the drivers directly from the extracted folder (though it's the same .dll build number).
  • I re-enabled a couple of services - Windows Driver Fundation and Windows Management Instrumentation (I'm guessing it was this last one)
  • I did as some user told me, disabled a HID, then restart, then try the buttons again.

Will do a bit of research on this, in any case, only solution 3 will win the games since 1 and 2 were my ideas.
And the user who posted that deleted his post =\

MotionJoy? Alternatively - have you tried hitting it against a nearby surface (both your computer and the controller)? You know what they say, if you want to fix a controller, ya gotta break a few eggs.

Haha, you know, I was seriously thinking that it might be it, since it fell like a thousand times already, but tested on my laptop and no problems.

I won't use a program, I want xinput working - start the game, start playing, don't want to mess with all that.

I know how you feel. I have 2 xbox360 controllers, they were perfectly with my xbox, but I just cannot sync them to the pc wireless adapter :|. Tried a ton of different ways to install the driver, still nothing, I was never able to use it on my pc, just been laying around the house for months now :(. Good luck finding a solution, I hope you'll get it done

Tell me more data, I might be able to help you. I did read some issues about it.

Try using the xbox 360 controller emulator so you can play games correctly.
I know it's probably not the best solution, but I can't think of what it can be.

Not the best solution, but tried it and doesn't work.

That's odd. Are you sure you set it up correctly? You need to put a copy of the files into the game directory and it'll beep when you start the game to let you know it "hooked" it correctly.

The only reason (besides being cheaper) why I bought the wired controller is not having to go thru all of the complications and replacement of batteries. The cable is more than enough in length and it works perfectly.

It worked fine for more than 3 years.

Do you have xpadder running in the background constantly? My buddy had similar problems, but when he closed x-padder for games that support Xbox 360 controllers natively, it was fine.

I was thinking it sounded something like this.

You haven't messed with the registry either have you? Because I think if you changed the pads DirectX name it might stop Xinput recognising apps from recognising and ignoring the other input.

Also which drivers did you install? They are slightly different if you get them from the web or if you download through windows update, maybe try the other.

No idea. Maybe it was the Psychonauts patch.

Xpadder isn't the issue, I only use it when I'm not using Steam, or in some specific games (like point and click).

I tried installing both 1.2 drivers, and downloading them from the net... same issue.
I'll try now the joystick on my laptop, see if I have the same issue.

Try uninstalling Psychonauts, maybe has to do with that if that's what started it.

Is your controller a legit one (from Microsoft) or a custom from another company ?

Where did you take your drivers from ? It is possible you did not take the good ones

microsoft.com and windows update. I'm not stupid.

And you're sure you took the 64-bit version ? This is a common problem. (32-bit drivers on 64-bit OS will just crash)

2 possibles Issues

  • Xpadder
  • XBox controller driver

Ensure that Xpadder is closed, no process running in the background
Uninstall driver before reinstall, on delete device, check the box that says "Uninstall driver"

for more help, I should remote debug

Hmmm... Maybe something else is set as the main controller, that why you'r xbox controller dosen't work in games. You should check what device are connected to the system. I think that some virtual controller is set as the main controller in games. You sholde sherch for it in Device Menager (i don't know what english nam for it is), and in HID device should be your device (must be power on), and maybe there is some other device that got the same name.
BTW. Do your guide button work? It's showing controller nr. 1?

Do you have anything else (such as a wireless phone) that uses the same signal as the 360 controller and might be interfering with it? Or have you recently moved some furniture or something, such as a metal filing cabinet near your PC? Probably, not the issue, but it's certainly possible.

Edit: The guy above me posted before I finished typing, lol, ninja'd.

I had a problem where mine wouldn't work with Super Meat Boy for a while. It happened right after I added a Logitech wireless keyboard and desktop set. I was able to fix it by going into the Control Panel, noticing that an extra generic gamepad input device had been added, then disabling it (I had to do a few tests to make sure it was the right one as it was nondescript).

I might be able to give more info once I get home and can give you the exact name of what I disabled.

I just tried this, disabling all my other devices (have a wireless keyboard and mouse too), but no luck =(

Did you try just disabling one at a time, leaving all others enabled? Also, I'll still try to give you more info later today when I get home.

Weird.
The 360 controller is your only connected controller, right? I've heard of people having issues if they have more than one controller connected.

yes, I have only one controller.

Maybe your controller needs to be calibrated. Go to the control panel when your controller is connected. Look under Hardware and sound.
After that click on view devices and printers. Right click Gamepad for Xbox 360(may be different for wireless controller).Click on Game controller settings. A new window should pop up click on properties. Then click on the settings tab in the window that appears after you click on properties. There should be a button that says Calibrate so click on that, then follow the on screen instructions. This worked for my wired controllers in the past so I'm unsure if it would work for Wireless controllers. This probably won't work, but might you might as well try.

i had to update my driver manually to even make the controller work for my pc (same ios as yours) if you want i can give you them so you can try to update them manually too, i dont have the page where i get them from because it was 2 years ago but i can upload them to any host you want and try that

Wired controllers are your best bet, I use one all the time and all games seem to be okay with that.

This is a driver problem. With the controller plugged in:

Open Device Manager. Start, Right click on Computer> Manage. Find your controller, and right click it, and click properties.

In the window that opens up, go to the Driver tab and Uninstall the drivers. There will a box that asks if you want to completely delete the driver files. Select yes. Unplug the controller, restart your computer, and plug it back in. Let Windows Update completely reinstall drivers.

Do you have access to another PC to check if that's not a problem with the controller itself?
