I have been searching the net for threads about TF2 key price rising on the market, but I only found topics on refined metal devaluation.

  • Before Summer Sale '14 you could get keys for about ~1.88 EUR on average.
  • During Summer Sale '14 the record low was 1.76 EUR.
  • Since then the price is still climbing, on Oct 28 someone sold a key for 2.02 EUR!

I noticed that the quantity of TF2 keys on the market has dropped since some months ago, just last night I checked it was somewhere above 3.300, now it's 2.300 and declining. Will the market run out of TF2 keys?

I don't play TF2, but you buy the keys from Valve for 1.99 EUR right? At this rate, the market will be more expensive than the official store.

What are your thoughts on this?

CS:GO keys are always more expensive on the market, and many ppl still buy them, so nothing surprising

they buy the keys from the store because you can trade them directly. If you buy keys from ingame you need to wait a few days.

No, you don't need to wait anything, waiting is only for ppl who didn't buy anything on Steam for a year, new accounts that made a purchase less than 30 days ago and for using your account from a new device.

Well if you're going to buy some, just buy from whichever is cheaper then! As for the price, humans are not always rational :3

I agree with you, I mostly buy keys from traders, however I still have wallet funds that I can only spend there, that's why I'm concerned of how the TF2 key market price is rising :/

Well, price went from 1,79 to 1,99 pretty fast, maybe that's the reason

Ppl use keys to trade with russians as they have lower prices for most of games. During sales there is more deals so more keys.

that and even you pay a little more in market for keys you can trade them right away

and even if you pay a little more chances are if your trading them for items it is more and likely still a lot cheaper in price for said items with keys then retail

here in the U.S. lately they have been ranging from 2.38-.2.49 but mostly around 2.40

if you buy them from the store you can use them right away to open a crate though i always did wonder where the keys come from as who buys them from the store for full price when you can get them cheaper in the market but some how they end up in the market

so i still wonder who buys them at full price from the store and how the end up on the market but maybe some buy them at the store for card drops then resell?

then again i just thought about that in some areas keys might be cheaper and get more in U.S. value for trading or selling

people buy to trade in steamtrades for example then the seller wants to get back his money so he sells the key
thats why after the sell he dont receive full price

Well... when I got keys from the TF2 shop I could trade them right away.

So I'm either lucky or the message is wrong.
Maybe the 2 day warning applies to people who never purchased stuff from the store.

I thought about this as well, stocking on a massive amount of keys could be a risk. I recall some news about people found some code in the trade window for Wallet funds transfer. But I don't think Valve will part with this cash cow. I can see Dota2 keys replaced by these compendiums, but I don't really play Dota either so I can't say.

I buy TF2 keys for 1.45€ a piece. There's no reason to buy from the market since it's so expensive.

One of the main reasons people buy keys from the market is either they don't own the game, or simply don't feel like installing it just to buy some keys a few cents cheaper, this might also explain why the market price is rising it probably means the TF2 community is slowly dying.
Also, it seems prices have stabilized since the new market was introduced, the first few sales with event cards I've purchased dozens of keys for about 1.45-1.55 euro's a piece from the market yet now it won't go any lower then say 1.70 or so.

I remember I often bought from in-game store because market was more expensive than game. Then Valve got more greedy or something (EU forced them to pay taxes?) and prices are now €2.

Keys seem to be traded more during sales, and a lot of people sell their keys to buy the games on sale. Notably, on-demand traders would sell a lot of the keys they get from selling games to get the funds needed to buy their next stock and so on, so the quantity of keys on the market increases a lot.

Now that there's much less interesting games on sale compared to during the big sales, key prices will rise again, until the next sale with lots of popular games come out.
