Do you know any game that's actually very good despite being incredibly ugly to make anyone believe (maybe including you)?

+1 to DROD.
I'd never heard of Dream Quest before, but I'll keep it in my radar from now on-- looks neat :)

DROD is amazing. Not ugly enough, to be considered ugly IMHO

Only played the first DROD. The only thing I recall as "ugly", is that the graphics looked kinda amateurish. Charming as hell thou.

Bad graphics?!?!?!? It's a 2000 masterpiece with the same engine of Unreal Tournament and huge scenarios! In his time you needed a good computer for playing it

I love the Alien & Zombie Shooter series! They're not ugly at all!

The Witcher 2, because of how low I had to make the visuals to run it.

*Note: I linked to the GOG version rather than the Steam one due to the fact that GOG currently has it on sale.

you're missing Devil Daggers.

(At least, I don't like it's artstyle very much and you keep raving about how it's the best thing ever)

Yes I'm sure. I had to run it at 800x600 minimum settings with lowered texture memory in the .ini files to get 30fps average on my laptop AMD A8 clocked up to 2.3 ghtz 6 gigs ram.

Moirai should be more well-known - it's not a huge thing, but it's so unique and short that it's just worth experiencing.

FF7 because graphics were an inconsistent mess. I really enjoyed the game despite the bizarre blocky character models that were used in game play & sometimes in videos. Other times like in battle, you had nice looking character sprites & in some of the movies too - guess they must have burned through budget or artists or maybe both really fast.

Squaresoft was a small team of only 11 people when Final Fantasy VII was released.

I didn't know that. I didn't look into their history. Still a favorite game of mine that I come back to every couple of years or so. Definitely my favorite game in the series that I've played. ;)

Then it was probably when they started. I distinctly remember an interview about Squaresoft's humble beginnings and they specifically mentioned the team size of when they were working on FF7. I wish I could track that interview down again.

Deus Ex: Game of the Year is one of the best games ever made (imo), and there's already a fan mod called Deus Ex Revision, which to some extent improves the graphics by a full revamp of the game, and is freely available to all owners of the game on steam, if the bad graphics bother you.

Playing Deadbolt lately, and despite it being pretty ugly, it's challenging and fun.

  • Original Deus Ex looked and sounded only average when it came out, and hasn't aged well in that regard. In terms of actual game, it's still rock-solid.
  • Depending on your taste in graphical style, everything Vlambeer would count - their take on pixel-art is a love-it/hate-it thing.
  • Dwarf Fortress (with default tileset)

Avadon and Avernum series. They are just incredible if just people could go over the graphics
One of my friends told me when Avernum 2 got bundled in the monthly "you spent 50 hours on that game, you're the only person I've seen spending time on that game. Why?" lol

hmm.. well i wouldn't call it ugly, but in the "incredibly minimal" games category i always recommend "Thomas was Alone"

way more fun then i ever thought it would be.
