So, I've been debating rooting my phone mostly just to remove all the bloatware that comes on it but I'm not sure if it is worth rooting just for that. I was hoping to get other people's opinions and was also wondering how many other people root their phone as well as why they root it.

Do you root your phone?

NO ROOT? NO LOOT!

Always root your device to get the most out of what you paid for.

XDA-Developers is one of the most amazing places there is online.

Ain't hard since there are step-to-step guides out there and as long as you don't suddenly disconnect the phone from power (usb) there ain't nothing happening to it.

1) Make a full backup of firmware. It is useful anyway.
2) Now you can root and do whatever you want - you can always restore from backup.

I have 2 Androids, one I rooted, the other one isn't rooted, that's because I need it for my Virgin TV Anywhere and online banking, neither of which will work with a rooted phone.

I'd recommend just get a micro sd card if you just want the extra storage.

I'll look at the prices before I consider rooting then, thanks for the suggestion.

I root on principle.

Is there anything RMS (Stallman) predicted that hasn't come true?

I don't always agree with his proposed solutions because I believe they are unrealistic given the nature & nurture of people at large but if you don't exercise your right to root, you will eventually lose it.

Nexus 5 here and I have never felt the urge to root it.

Probably because 95% of the time I use my phone to just view the current time.

I root BlueStacks, not sure if that counts, though when I had a droid I rooted too, makes me feel free having less limitations.

I would like to root my Xperia E, but it is so unpopular that there is no custom ROM that is able to maintain the phone's functions (camera, etc.)

I rooted one once, but only after I had traded up to a new model and had it just lying around. The root was technically successful, but the process deleted my original image so I lost my chance to ever revert back to it. That was enough to make me nervous about the whole process and I haven't tried it since.

Almost the exact same list of reasons as me :)

However, I am not so comfortable with unlocked bootloader and the giant security hole that introduces. It is a matter of convenience (and experimentation) over security. But if I had any secrets or proprietary business information on my phone I would not use an unlocked/rooted device.

ofc. It's a major reason to own an Android device.

Did it on my old phone but I don't feel like it's necessary on my phone.

Never done so, probably never will. All the stuff that's on it doesn't really bother me at all, so it's not worth the risk (and time) for me.

Not worth it on the newer android phones it disables knox and with it certain features also on the newer phones you are able to disable any apps you dont like and most you can uninstall as well, download an app called package disabler pro to make it easyer it will let you disable/freeze anything you dont want running without root.

I would really like to root my phone to install a custom ROM, but sadly, I have a "cursed" model (Samsung Galaxy Trend Plus), for which no working custom ROM exist. I'll never buy a low-end Samsung phone again.
Regarding the bloatware, I just disable it, since I don't really need much space anyway.
My browser of choice is Firefox, who supports ad-blockers, for the few times I need it.

I rooted my Samsung Galaxy S3 because Samsung has retarded, non logical "features" that can't be changed otherwise. Like turning any SMS that's longer than 3 text messages automatically into an MMS, making an annoying sound when your battery goes below 5% and 15%, making annoying artificial camera sounds. Not to mention the unremovable, useless bloatware. Worth it if you want to change something you really dislike otherwise don't bother. You can disable most bloatware and you won't gain much from removing it.

I'd like to, but mine's Samsung and as I was informed, Samsung devices have a 99% chances of bricking upon rooting. :(
