It was quite obvious, it would be way harder to proof check all country laws in order to propetly test it, when there's no need to do so, you got only 300 people participating, it's NOT much. Sending one to Estonia, for example, would be just unnecessary complication and there would be even possibility of someone from even more obscure places (for US company) to send them to. That was just logical conclusion that only people from US would be picked FOR THIS STAGE.

Why was everyone allowed to participate and why they gathered personal information? Think about it, they were giving badges on steam for volunteering for beta testing, meaning EVERYONE would want to get them, limiting it only for US citizens would be, kind of tough to make and possibly ineffective, as people would try to fake their adress, I think it could've been done, but probably wasn't worth the efford. Also, they likely knew only US habitants will be able to participate, so they needed the info in advance, you subscribed to that by giving the info, no one forced you and you gained a badge, if you were afraid of leaking your info, being in the beta wouldn't have solved anything at all and if you feel like you're decieved, you got your badge, you really thought you'll participate in the beta? Cmon, be real here, chance was almsot nonexistant.

I do agree that they shouldn't have created the badge for filling the info in, preferable system would've been just to ask people from US to fill the info in, in order to participate, people wouldn't have any reason to fake that and almost only people willing to really participate would've be chosen, maybe they were afraid of hate or something, can't tell, now they have possibly someone who's not willing to aprticipate and wanted to gain badge only, dunno.

I think it's all pretty much common sense, but a lot of people seem not to get it, feel free to add something I've missed or discuss if I'm wrong about something. Also, sorry for clumsy English

If they only allowed to US users to fill the info for the badge, everyone would have complained for not being allowed to fill it on first place so, no matter what they do, someone will always complain.

My problem with it is that previous text suggested the possibility of it being multiple regions (though the chosen users would need to cover region specific costs according to the terms). Had they outright stated it was US only in the text (as it seems the official group chat was told several times), plenty of users wouldn't have given their info. There are companies that exist only to find and sell such information, and I don't like sharing it for no purpose.

What if you got into the beta? Your data is at equal risk whether you got into the Beta or not. I'm sorry, but it sounds more like you are upset that people outside the U.S. didn't get to get into the Beta, not the privacy concerns, because if you were truly concerned about privacy, you wouldn't have even attempted to join the Beta.

I'll give my details for companies that would need to do a delivery. That makes ****ing sense. But then, only 2 other sites have my full information, and both of them have actually used it to send me stuff.

Valve collected all this information, then revealed that they wouldn't do anything for people outside the US. Basically, they decided that letting people the world over believe this was open to them is a perfectly fine way to get this information, which like I said before, is the sole reason some internet companies exist.

I'm sure the people complaining would have been one of the .0001% of people to actually be chosen.

You were afraid of people faking their addresses? Then announce it the day after you close the signup. It's been two months and when do they decide to announce it? A few hours before announcing the winners... You can call me butthurt (because I am, even if I knew almost exactly how slim my chances were), but I'm mostly disappointed by how they managed this situation. Did this just come to their attention? I highly doubt so. Then why wait the last second to tell us?

I can see your point about poorly managing this, but on the same token, they might have attempted to make it happen, and was looking into ways up until the last moment to make it happen. Just because a company deals with an international crowd over the internet doesn't mean they have any experience with dealing with that same crowd off-line.

This isn't the first time I've seen the international crowd getting pissed at a U.S. based company for not catering to/excluding them. There really is one solution to this, start, or help start a company in your home country (or a country that wouldn't have the same hurdles for shipping things like this). Make it as successful as Steam is, and viola, you have the same opportunities. The way I see it, that's really your only option to every change this system is to create something of equal or greater value that will at least compete with Steam, in this case.

It turns out, they had no intention. Found out from another user yesterday that people asking in the official group chat from day 1 were told it was going to be US only, that just wasn't announced in the terms and conditions.

Well, if I'll ever get a console, it won't be Valve's one. Ha, in your face, evil US company!!!111oneoneone

More serious: Am I disappoint? Yes, I am - Valve made piss poor job with this (but, it's all they do lately, so no big surprise). But all this butthurt about privacy - it's same stuff I have to type every time I'm buying something from them, so they already had it.
